Moviegoers are taking notice too. Early box-office tracking suggests the movie will open north of $125 million over the first weekend in May. That'd be double what both "Thor" and "Captain America" reeled in last year. The question is whether "Avengers" can top the $128 million opening weekend of "Iron Man 2" in 2010. If Tony Stark can collect all that cheddar on his own, one would expect a film assembling so many Marvel heroes and villains on one screen would eclipse that mark. Based on the early geek buzz, it does seem like "Avengers" can pull it off. And it's the buzz that Whedon is counting on.
"We really put the characters through it," he told MTV News recently, "and we want the audience to be with them every step of the way and come out of it going, 'That was an extraordinary experience, and now I want to pay to see it again.' "

Foreclosure activity fell in the first quarter to the lowest level in more than four years, but mainly because the process of removing people from their homes has slowed. The number of homes just beginning the foreclosure process rose in March for a third straight month, a sign that the nation's housing problems are far from over, according to RealtyTrac, which tracks the figures.
?The low foreclosure numbers in the first quarter are not an indication that the massive reservoir of distressed properties built up over the past few years has somehow miraculously evaporated,? said Brandon Moore, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac.
He said a large backlog of bank-owned properties that has accumulated over the past few years will put added pressure on the housing market when banks eventually list them for sale.
?The dam may not burst in the next 30 to 45 days, but it will eventually burst, and everyone downstream should be prepared for that to happen,? he said in a news release.
Foreclosure filings were reported on 572,928 properties during the quarter, down 2 percent from the previous quarter and 16 percent from a year earlier, for the lowest total since the fourth quarter of 2007, RealtyTrac said. A default notice, scheduled auction or bank repossession was reported on one of every 230 U.S. housing units in the quarter.
But new foreclosure filings, which indicate lenders are beginning the process of repossession, rose by 7 percent in March, the third straight monthly increase. Foreclosure starts topped 100,000 for the first time since November 2011, although they were 11 percent lower than a year ago.
The decrease in foreclosure activity was caused primarily by declining activity in the so-called non-judicial states, led by?Arkansas, with a 79 percent drop, and Nevada, with a 62 percent drop. Recent legislation or court cases in those states have disrupted the normal foreclosure process, according to RealtyTrac.
Foreclosure activity also slowed in other non-judicial states including Washington (down 55 percent), Arizona (down 41 percent), Texas (down 31 percent) and California (down 21 percent).
The 26 states that typically require a judicial review of a foreclosure saw the pace of filings pick up in the first quarter.
The year-over-year pickup in filings in the first quarter was highest in Indiana (up 45 percent), Connecticut (up 38 percent), Massachusetts (up 26 percent), Florida (up 26 percent), South Carolina (up 26 percent), and Pennsylvania (up 23 percent).
States with the biggest monthly increases in foreclosure starts included Nevada (up 153 percent), Utah (up 103 percent), New Jersey (up 73 percent), Maryland (up 53 percent) and North Carolina (up 47 percent).
Nationwide, the length of time it takes to complete a foreclosure continued to rise -- to an average of 370 days in the first quarter from 348 days in the previous quarter. The process is picking up in some states, though. The average time to foreclose in California was 320 days, down from 352 days in the fourth quarter of last year.
The process in some states, though, is taking considerably longer. Foreclosures are taking the longest, on average, in New York (1,056 days), New Jersey (966 days), Florida (861 days), Illinois (628 days) and Maryland.

Updated at 8:11 a.m. ET: PYONGYANG -- North Korea said on Wednesday it was injecting fuel into a long-range rocket "as we speak'' ahead of a launch condemned by its neighbors and the West.
The launch is set to take place between Thursday and next Monday and has prompted neighbors such as the Philippines to re-route their air traffic just in case.
Japan said it would shoot down the rocket if it crossed its airspace.
The launch of the Unha-3 rocket, which North Korea says will merely put a weather satellite into space, breaches U.N. sanctions imposed to prevent Pyongyang from developing a missile that could carry a nuclear warhead.

It coincides with the 100th birthday celebrations of the founder of North Korea, Kim Il-sung, whose grandson, Kim Jong-un, now rules. Kim Il-sung died in 1994.
"I think the fuel injection will be completed at an appropriate date,'' Paek Chang-ho, head of the satellite control center of the Korean Committee of Space Technology, told a group of foreign journalists in the North Korea capital, Pyongyang.
He would not comment on when the fuel injection would be complete. "And as for the exact timing of the launch, it will be decided by my superiors'', Paek said.

Space consultant James Oberg asked, "When would we get the first radio signals from the satellite?" The director said the first radio signals would be received about 12 hours after launch.
Oberg told NBC News that he had plotted the orbit of the satellite and said it would not really come directly over North Korea for about 11 or 12 hours. However, radio amateurs outside North Korea have a much better opportunity to pick up signals from the satellite beginning in western Australia 20 minutes after launch. The U.S. eastern seaboard would be able to hear it in the following hour.
The director said the satellite would be broadcasting North Korean songs celebrating the "Dear Leader" and encouraged people around the world to tune in and listen.
Regional powers said the launch is a disguised test of the North's long-range missile.

South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after their 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce rather than a peace treaty, warned Pyongyang it would deepen its isolation if it went ahead with the launch.
Security sources in Seoul, citing satellite images, have said that North Korea, which walked out of "six-party'' disarmament talks three years ago, is also preparing a third nuclear test following the launch, something it did in 2009, and a move bound to trigger further condemnation and isolation.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that history pointed to "additional provocations" from North Korea after the launch, apparently a reference to a nuclear test.

"This launch will give credence to the view that North Korean leaders see improved relations with the outside world as a threat to their system,'' she told cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
"And recent history strongly suggests that additional provocations may follow."
She also called on China to do more to ensure regional stability.
China, impoverished North Korea's only major ally, on Tuesday reiterated its pleas for calm and said it had "repeatedly expressed its concern and anxiety about the developments", Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told a press briefing in Beijing.

Space officials in North Korea told NBC Tuesday that all assembly and preparations for its new satellite and rocket have been completed, saying it will be launched sometime between Thursday and Monday.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital, Pyongyang, the experts refused to answer the question about whether the rocket has been fueled yet, but they said assembly and other preparations are done.

They also repeated their insistence that that satellite is not a cover for a missile test, adding that "the right to have a satellite is a universal right of every nation."
Regarding U.S. concerns, the official said, "These are things that shouldn't be worried about."

The space experts said there is a five-year North Korean space program to develop larger rockets, improve satellite control centers and organize better cameras to observe Earth.
In response to a question about the cost of the satellite, a North Korean Space Tech Committee representative said, "An appropriate amount has been invested."
China on Tuesday reiterated its calls for calm and restraint on the Korean peninsula.

Another nuclear test would almost certainly alarm neighbors and infuriate the West, which has long sought to curb the North's nuclear ambitions.
Meanwhile a U.S.-based rights organization Tuesday published a report saying at least 150,000 North Koreans are languishing in gulags.
The U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea said its report was based on extensive interviews with over 60 defectors and more than 40 satellite photos of North Korean political prisoner camps.

Malawi's finance minister expects suspended international aid to be restored under its new president, Joyce Banda, helping prop up a budget increasingly under strain after the previous president picked fights with overseas donors.
Finance Minister Ken Lipenga also told Reuters on Monday that former President Bingu wa Mutharika, who died on Thursday of a heart attack, had blocked plans called for by the International Monetary Fund to devalue the currency because he was worried the move would hurt the poor.
Aid-dependent Malawi slid into economic crisis over the past year as Mutharika, a professorial but temperamental former World Bank economist, squabbled with major western donors who then froze millions of dollars of assistance that had traditionally bankrolled about 40 percent of the budget.

"I expect the resumption of aid will happen," Lipenga said.
Foreign diplomats showed their support for Banda by visiting her residence even before she had been officially installed, but so far there have been no concrete signs the West is preparing to restart the flow of aid.
The finance minister has not yet discussed economic policy with Banda since she became president but he thinks she will be able to address some issues that raised red flags with donors including suppression of human rights and the media.
"The donors were emphasising the concerns of the Malawi people," he said.
Mutharika plunged the country into isolation last year when he expelled the ambassador from former colonial master and biggest aid donor Britain, who said in a leaked diplomatic cable Mutharika was autocratic and intolerant of criticism.
In a watershed moment for the normally peaceful state known as the "Warm Heart of Africa" Mutharika's police killed 20 people in anti-government protests in July 2011, leading to international condemnation and a cut of aid packages from other donors.
DEVALUED
The IMF, which has suspended a $79 million aid facility due to conflict with Mutharika, wants to see Malawi's currency, the kwacha, further devalued, saying too much of the state's precious reserves are being used to defend it.
Malawi devalued the kwacha last year to 165 to the dollar from 150. On the black market, the price is nearly double, reaching 295 to the dollar just before Mutharika's death.
On news of his death, the rate dropped to 270-275 with many anticipating an end to a foreign currency crisis that had crippled the economy. As dollars disappeared, fuel prices had soared and foreign goods such as medicine became prohibitively expensive.
Lipenga said the government was poised for another devaluation in September, after he returned from a meeting with the IMF in Washington, but Mutharika blocked it.
"He was very much against devaluation unaccompanied by other measures because he argued it would hurt the poor," Lipenga said.
Malawi was one of the fastest growing economies in the world after Mutharika took office in 2004, averaging 7 percent expansion between 2005-2010 thanks to internationally funded fertiliser subsidies and seed programmes that turned the nation of subsistence farmers into food exporters.
But the aid cut-off and Mutharika's steadfast ways put the economy on a death spiral.
Lipenga said the economy could return to its fast rate of growth if aid was restored but added the country needed to move away from its biggest cash crop tobacco, which at one point provided up to 80 percent of its foreign currency, by increasing the strength of its value-added businesses.
"We really need to start generating forex for ourselves," he said.

Omega-3 fatty acid supplements failed to show a benefit for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), authors of a meta-analysis concluded.
Data from 14 randomized trials showed a relative risk of 0.99 for patients treated with omega-3 supplements, virtually identical to the risk in the placebo groups.
A small reduction in cardiovascular death disappeared after exclusion of a trial that had major methodologic problems, investigators reported online in Archives of Internal Medicine.
"Our results show insufficient evidence of a secondary preventive effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplements against overall cardiovascular events among patients with a history of cardiovascular disease," Seung-Kwon Myung, MD, of the National Cancer Center in Ilsan, South Korea, and co-authors concluded in their article.
The findings are at odds with analyses performed before 2010, which showed a significant benefit for secondary prevention, the authors added.
However, the results are consistent with those of the most recent clinical trials, which generally have shown no effect of omega-3 supplements for prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with existing CVD.
A series of articles published in the 1970s made a case for consumption of fish or marine mammals rich in omega-3 fatty acids as the explanation for the low prevalence of CVD among Eskimos living in Greenland.
Subsequent clinical and preclinical investigations supported the epidemiologic evidence by suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, and anti-arrhythmic effects, the authors wrote in their introduction.
Continued research yielded inconsistent or conflicting results about the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular risk. A systematic review and meta-analysis showed an overall benefit of omega-3 intake on primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention (Am J Clin Nutr 2006; 84: 5-17).
Data from randomized trials, most of which focused on secondary prevention, have remained controversial, owing to inconsistent results and methodologic problems of some studies, the authors continued. Moreover, no meta-analyses have included results of clinical trials published since 2010.
Myung and colleagues performed a comprehensive review and meta-analysis that incorporated the most recent data on the effects of omega-3 supplementation on secondary cardiovascular prevention.
From 1,007 published articles reviewed, they selected 14 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials for the analysis. The trials involved a total of 20,485 patients with a history of CVD. In all of the trials, patients used omega-3 supplements for at least a year.
The primary analysis focused on the association between omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and total cardiovascular events.
The overall lack of benefit extended to all-cause mortality, sudden cardiac death, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and stroke or transient ischemic attack.
The only benefit identified by the analysis was a 9% reduction in the relative risk of cardiovascular death. After exclusion of a large clinical trial that had methodologic problems, the benefit disappeared.
An extensive subgroup analysis failed to identify any patients who benefited from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.
Despite the resoundingly negative results, authors of an accompanying editorial left the door open to the possibility of a cardiovascular benefit from omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.
Specifically, they cited the need to await results from an ongoing 20,000-patient randomized trial of vitamin D and omega-3 supplementation for primary prevention. They also suggested a course of action for physicians until the trial results come in.
"To date, there is no conclusive evidence to recommend fish oil supplementation for primary or secondary prevention of CVD," Frank B. Hu, MD, PhD, and JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, of Harvard and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, wrote in their summation.
"However, a diet high in fatty fish ... should continue to be recommended for the general population and for patients with existing CVD because fish not only provides omega-3 fatty acids but also may replace less healthy protein sources, such as red meat."
Patients who cannot or will not eat fish should consider increasing consumption of plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids, they suggested.
"For primary or secondary prevention, omega-3 supplementation cannot supersede an overall healthy diet, but a cardioprotective diet needs to be rich in omega-3 fatty acids," Hu and Manson concluded.
Myung and co-authors had no relevant disclosures. Editorialists Hu and Manson also had no relevant disclosures.
