This prize is for the best male mating display.

Nominees: The always over-the-top peacock, for his garish feather displays; the hilarious houbara bustard, for their wild mating runs, which have them flinging a shield of white feathers over their faces and scampering around blindly; and the marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird, which whirls its long tail in circles to impress the ladies.

And the winner is ? the houbara bustard. Tough competition for this one, and the Animal Academy doesn't usually reward comedy, but the houbara bustard gives it his all for this win. Plus chest features are totally in this year.

Best Actress
Though females aren't usually as flashy as males in the wild, this award goes to the female animal that puts on the best mating display.

Nominees: Female butterflies, which, if raised in cool temperatures, take it upon themselves to pursue males for mates; Wilson's Phalaropes, which switch the usual sex roles and put on flashy courtship displays to snag guys; and the bonobo, for whom sex is an anything-goes group activity.

And the winner is ... the Wilson's Pharlarope. Females in this species of shorebird show up at breeding grounds first and puff up their feathers to lure in mates. Once they snag a guy, they defend him zealously, protecting a territory around the nest where he cares for their babies.

Best Picture
The most prestigious award of the bunch goes to the creature that's provided the wildest story of the year.

Nominees: Zombie ants, who capitalize on zombie-mania when attacked by a mind-controlling fungus ; the glowing millipedes of the genus Mytoxia, who sweat cyanide to ward off predators; and the Cyclops shark, a malformed dusky fetus whose look mixes grotesque and cute in equal measure.

And the winner is ... the Cyclops shark. Millipedes and ants are forever, but this weird fetus is one-of-a-kind, or at least very rare. 4. DO add the personal touch to your social promotion - Alert influential bloggers and social media connections about your launch via email, Twitter direct message, etc. Ask for their support by retweeting your launch announcements, mentioning the product in a blog post, or commenting on your blog post announcing the new item. Perhaps you can even offer the product to bloggers at no charge, in return for a review of the product on their blog. I believe in freedom of religion. I believe in being politically correct. What I do not believe in are double standards.

To that end, Mitt Romney must answer for having been 32 years old, and the member of an organization that explicitly excluded African Americans.

Frank Rich, the Award-winning journalist, recently explored the personal influence of Romney's Mormon faith and its political significance in his presidential run.

In a New York Magazine piece entitled, "Who in God's Name Is Mitt Romney?", Rich interviews long-term acquaintances of the former governor, one of whom is quoted as saying, "None of us had any idea who this guy was."

Rich explores the idea that Romney's personal persona -- which has long been described as being impersonal at best, and disingenuous at worst, may well be due to the fact he has not been free to discuss the matter most important to his heart: namely, his Mormon faith.

In 2007, the debate over President Obama's religion was a mirror with two faces.

Some believed Obama's brief time as a child in Indonesia, a largely Muslim country, coupled with the stamp of his father's brown skin, was sufficient evidence to question his religious beliefs.

In a post-9/11 environment, in which Muslims have been unfairly framed as terrorists, just by virtue of their faith, Republicans and the Fox News propaganda machine, effectively engaged in fear-mongering to cast Obama as 'other' and 'un-American'. That campaign aggressively continued for three years, and was fuelled by the Birther movement.

Birtherism received a strange level of mainstream legitimacy via ambassadors like Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh and, yes, House Speaker John Boehner. In answer to David Gregory's call on NBC's Meet the Press to denounce birtherism, Boehner said, "It's not my job" to tell people what to believe. "The president says he's a Christian and I take him at his word".

Dog whistlers, carnival barkers and their empathizers, united to cast a shadow of doubt onto the nation's first African-American president.

The irony is that much of this religious McCarthyism began during the primary campaign fight.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, in the tradition of thousands of African-American ministers, was quoted with language that understandably was harsh to many white Americans. But that language is commonplace in the pulpits of some black churches.

Why?

Slavery existed for centuries. Jim Crow was real for 100 years. Lynchings were viewed through eyes of people who are only 60 years old today. Legalized discrimination was the law of this great land, and that is the exceptional America into which Wright, and my own parents, were born.

For men and women of Wright's generation, as President Obama so eloquently stated in his famous "Race Speech", "the memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the anger and bitterness of those years."

In a community -- as in most -- where tradition is defined by religion, the intersection of the two is inevitable. Then-senator Obama was criticized and called to answer. Was he a secret Muslim? Or an angry black Christian?

But in 2012, as Romney marches steadily toward the GOP nomination, American media abandons any critique of his affiliation with a notoriously discriminatory Mormon Church.

This is the worst of double standards. A politically correct environment, using Article VI of the Constitution that calls for "no religious test", as a convenient excuse -- means the conversation must be muted completely or framed in a politically acceptable context.

That's fine. I'm game.

When JFK -- our first Catholic president -- ran for office, the press questioned whether his loyalty would be to the Pope in Rome. When Joe Lieberman was selected as Al Gore's running mate, the international media wondered if his Jewish heritage could influence U.S. foreign policy toward Israel. When President Obama won the White House, a conservative movement organized in the name of "taking their country back," questioning his faith and heritage.

Is Mitt Romney, now, or ever been a racist? Did he openly disagree with the Mormon policy to exclude black people of the global African Diaspora? How did he handle prejudice in his family and church, both as a young man and as an adult?

It is important to note, that the Mormon Church only ever officially allowed blacks in the year 1978: more than a decade after the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1968. An adult Mitt Romney, well into his 30's, loyally served in a religious organization that explicitly excluded people on the basis of race, and whose fundamental teachings aggressively preached racist ideologies.

Political correctness has its place; but we can agree to have our own opinions, not our own facts.

When Mitt Romney proudly accepted an endorsement from Donald Trump, who wittingly orchestrated media, lies and innuendo to cast doubt on President Obama's nationality and legitimacy, was that acceptable? When Newt Gingrich suggested that 'inner-city' kids have no work ethic, is that 'wrong' or simply the status quo of modern conservatism? Will Ron Paul ever be called to tasks for his explicitly racist newsletters? Can Rick Santorum simply be excused for being "blah"?

There is a burgeoning culture of silence that allows wildly inappropriate dogma to go unchecked, but only as it pertains to the GOP. And herein lies the point about Mormonism, its role in Romney's life and its history of racism: if President Obama was forced to answer for every tangential acquaintance, Romney cannot be given a pass.

If Rev. Wright's church exclusively denied membership to white-Americans, would the Republican Party have ignored that fact? Or, as in Romney's case, completely disregarded it under the guise of religious acceptance and political correctness?

In a political environment which excuses a neo-conservative movement that uses race-baiting tactics in order to win votes -- and does so by omission, distraction and hyperbole -- it is time to discuss Romney's past and his Mormonism in the cinematic and optic terms of black and white.

As an ice age crept upon them thousands of years ago, Neanderthals and modern human ancestors expanded their territory ranges across Asia and Europe to adapt to the changing environment.

Although many anthropologists believe that modern humans ancestors "wiped out" Neanderthals, it's more likely that Neanderthals were integrated into the human gene pool thousands of years ago during the Upper Pleistocene era as cultural and climatic forces brought the two groups together, said Arizona State University Professor C. Michael Barton of the Center for Social Dynamics and Complexity and School of Human Evolution and Social Change.

"The traditional story in textbooks doesn't fit well with what we know about hunter-gatherers. For the most part, they don't like to go far from home. It's dangerous," Barton said.

Barton and Julien Riel-Salvatore of the University of Colorado Denver, present new research in the journal, Advances in Complex Systems, that the Neanderthals demise was due to a combination of influences, including cultural changes. The paper titled, Agents of Change: Modeling Biocultural Evolution in Upper Pleistocene Western Eurasia, appears online in January. It builds on work published last year in the journal Human Ecology and on recent genetic studies that show a Neanderthal contribution to the modern human genome.

"How a culture's working knowledge is passed on is as important as biological information for human evolution," Barton said. "There is a perception that biological evolution determines culture during the Pleistocene era and that cultural influences predominate afterwards (including today). The reality is that the two forces have been working together and they were as important 50,000 years ago as they are today."

The researchers used archaeological data to track cultural and socio-ecological changes in behavior in Western Eurasia during the past 120,000 years. As Neanderthals and early humans land-use patterns shifted during the last ice age, computer modeling showed that the two populations began to interact and mate, leading to the "extinction" of one of the groups due to hybridization, a well-recognized phenomenon in conservation biology. Neanderthals were limited to western Eurasia and usually it is the smaller population that becomes "extinct" in this way. Nevertheless, succeeding hybrid populations still carry genes from the regional group that disappeared, according to the researchers.

To address the possibility that the two groups would not have seen one another as potential mates, the researchers also examined the possible impacts of social barriers to mating in their models. They found that unless social taboos were nearly 100 percent effective, it would have not made any difference in outcomes over time as the gene pools mixed, Barton said.

"This is one of the first attempts to explicitly address the impact of various degrees of social avoidance on possible hybridization between the two groups," added Riel-Salvatore.

"Other than the fact that they disappeared, there is no evidence that Neanderthals were any less fit as hunter-gatherers of the late Pleistocene than any other human ancestor living at that time. It looks like they were as capable as anyone else," Barton said.

Barton and Riel-Salvatore studied the stone artifacts that were left behind by these ancient peoples to track the movement patterns among hunter-gatherers across western Eurasia during the Pleistocene era.

"Stone technology is completely different than the kind of technology we have today," Barton said. "But it can tell us important things about land use, how people organized themselves and how they moved to access resources to live."

The Atlanta front office didn't overreact to the team's collapse. Actually, the front office didn't react at all. There haven't been any significant trades here, no notable signings, nothing buzzy to talk about. The Braves are simply hoping that their young players will continue to improve and some of last year's bums will get it together this time around. The payroll is almost identical to 2011's payroll.

Can the Braves stay competitive in a tricky NL East, where the Phillies remain loaded and the Marlins and Nationals have made significant upgrades? At the end of the day, it probably comes down to player health and youngster improvements. The Braves could have a terrific pitching staff if everyone stays hale (and the depth is ridiculous), but there are plenty of questions about the offense.

Jason Heyward was a hero in 2010 and a near-zero in 2011. Now what?

I suspect Heyward has a chance to become such a trendy sleeper that all the value is eventually sucked out, but you should put him on your target list anyway. I don't care about all those numbers heading in the wrong direction last year: walk rate dropped, line drives disappeared, OBP and power cratered, and his surface stats collapsed ? we all know that. But there's a logical reason why the super sophomore crash-landed.

Heyward had an early shoulder injury that affected him all season; by the middle of the summer, his mechanics were all messed up and he couldn't get out of his own way. And it seems like former batting coach Larry Parrish did more harm than good when it came to working with Heyward. (To borrow from thoroughbred handicapping parlance, this feels like a horse who had a bad trip, a valid excuse for a poor performance. Sometimes you just throw the last race out. Back me up, Andy Beyer.)

Greg Walker is the new batting coach in Atlanta (with Scott Fletcher assisting), and while he's not coming off a happy season himself ? he was with the White Sox last year, draw your own conclusions ? he does bring a more modern approach to the task at hand. Heyward has also dropped 21 pounds, and while the "best shape of his life" meme gets a lot of laughs on the Internet, it never bothers me to hear that someone's trimmed down.

Here's what Chipper Jones had to say on Heyward 3.0, talking to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

"To answer your question, weight is not an issue with [Heyward]," Jones said. "The ball is jumping off the bat now close to what it was in spring training 2010. He's got some more in there; he's still making some adjustments and it's a slow process. As Tiger Woods will tell you, you go through a swing change, it takes some time. But he's starting to get it and he's starting to get results."

It's refreshing to see Jones on board, given that he was on Heyward's case at times last year, almost daring the kid to play through the shoulder problems. Unfortunately for us, a lot of experts are jumping on the Heyward train as well. His ADP is 85.6 in early Mock Draft Central industry play (that makes him the No. 24 outfielder), while he's at 107.3 in standard mocks (the No. 31 outfielder). The first price gives me cause for pause, but the second one looks like a bargain.

How soon is now for Julio Teheran? What becomes of the jumbled rotation?

Although Teheran might be the best pitching prospect in the National League and he's coming off a super year at Triple-A (2.55 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 2.54 K/BB, 15-3 record), he just turned 21 last month and the Braves don't have an automatic rotation spot for him. By default, he might have to start the year getting more Triple-A seasoning, work he may or may not need. Even if he does make the Braves to open the year, you have to figure the inning ceiling will be fairly low.

The Braves are looking strong at the top, in theory, with established righties Tommy Hanson and Tim Hudson. Brandon Beachy isn't going anywhere after last year's splashy debut. Jair Jurrjens was shopped during the winter but no one was biting; thus, he comes back for another year on Peachtree Street.

Two more kids who got their cleats wet last year (Mike Minor, a 24-year-old lefty, and Randall Delgado, a 21-year old righty) will challenge for rotation spots and could push their way into the mixed-league pickup discussion. Minor struck out 77 in 82.2 Atlanta innings last year and was the ninth overall pick in the 2009 draft. I might push an extra buck or two on him in an NL-only pool.

The health status of the veterans might determine who makes the team out of camp and who doesn't. Hanson's dealing with a sore shoulder and has been babied all winter (he recently began throwing again), Hudson has a bad back (there's been talk of him not pitching until May), and Jurrjens is coming off knee problems. I'm figuring Pastornicky will tread around .260, hit around five homers, and maybe steal 12-15 bases ? and there's very little upside past that.

Chipper Jones didn't retire? Martin Prado didn't get traded?

We told you up front, this was a stand-pat team. Other than a salary dump of Derek Lowe and the dismissal of Alex Gonzalez, there were no major changes.

Prado looked lost in left field last year and the Braves were eager for a swap after the season, but no one whispered the magic words to GM Frank Wren. Alrighty, then. It's a shame Prado no longer carries 2B eligibility and he's a carnival on the bases (13-for-28 for his career), but we're still talking about a career .293 hitter who has 39 homers over three years. There's some bounce-back potential here, sneaky sleeper value in deeper groups. He's currently the No. 191 player off the mock-draft board, and can be used at third and in the outfield.

Jones carries a laundry list of physical problems at this stage of his career ? just about every part of his lower body has bothered him at some point over the last 2-3 years ? and he hasn't seen 500 at-bats since 2007. If the Braves can get another .275 year out of him with 18 homers over 126 games, they'd probably sign up for it right now. If you wind up rostering Jones, you need your Plan B ahead of time: a DL stint will be coming at some point. It's part of the investment here.

Hey, we're not going to talk about the entire 25-man roster with these things. Some stories have to wait for another day, another blog, another forum. But before we hit the exit, we'll give you a couple of quick hitters. ? Freddie Freeman went the other way from Heyward in the offseason: he bulked up, added muscle. At least that's the skinny from Atlanta. Generally I hate going near any sophomore buzz players, but I get the idea Freeman might be unheralded enough to actually be a good buy this year (I like that he improved in the second half of 2011, and wasn't overmatched against lefties). He's trading around Pick 118 right now, in the company of Billy Butler and Mark Reynolds. ? Closer Craig Kimbrel and setup ace Johnny Venters collapsed down the stretch, perhaps because of Fredi Gonzalez's heavy workload. Prior to that, they were terrific for our fake-baseball teams. Venters worked 85 games and threw 88 innings, a heavy burden, and it seemed to catch up to him in September (5.11 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, 10 walks). Kimbrel had three blown saves in September and a 4.76 ERA, but he also struck out 20 in 11.1 innings; maybe variance was his undoing, nothing past that. I doubt I'll own either pitcher this year, but it's simply a matter of timing and preference. I don't like to chase setup heroes who are coming off magical years (that's Venters), and I also want to get my saves on the cheap, which probably chases me off Kimbrel. If you want to stump for these guys in the comments, I'm all ears. ? Michael Bourn's speed cannot be denied, but I'm not spending an early-round pick on him. He's a sinkhole in the power categories, and once you take a one-trick pony like Bourn, you're locked out of any similar players later in the draft. It's not that hard to assemble a running roster; silly rabbit, high-priced specialists are for kids.
