Writing and Poetry: How the Two Actually Coincide | mini-mokiwe.com

Writing is the basic form of human expression next to human speaking and body language. However, writing is a form that can be molded. The choice of words, the structure of sentences, everything matters in writing. Poetry is a form of writing, but one that is artistic and is an expression of one?s ideas through the use of printed language. Writing gave birth to poetry.

The qualities of poetry are simpler than writing. Most writers get away with poetic justice, meaning that the grammar may be wrong in conventional writing, but for the sake of poetry and art, it becomes and functions correctly as it effaces the proper expression of the writer?s feelings. Poetry, at this point, is a form of writing unsuitable for business or technical writing.

Poetry omits details. Japanese poetry, known as the Haiku, only uses three lines that are short. The Haiku reflects Japanese minimalism. Most poetry have minimalism. Some have rhymes to guide the reader and allure the audiences. The basic point of poetry is to describe something narratively while using every event, word and line sparingly.

Understanding poetry is also important. Most poetry focuses on context, connotations and denotations. When reading poetry, one should consider the social structures of the era it was written, the personality of the writer and what they focus on. Poetry is a gift of humanity to the arts. It is to entertain, to be thoughtful, to show compassion and express one?s self.

Microsoft Reminds Samsung and Nokia Who Is In Charge Of Windows Phone 8

Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop (L) shakes ...

Yesterday?s announcement at IFA in Berlin from Samsung of the first Windows Phone 8 powered smartphone raised a few eyebrows in the tech world. With Nokia and Microsoft hosting a joint event in New York next week (and every sign that this would be the debut of Nokia?s Windows Phone 8 ) it was expected that Nokia would have the privilege of being the first to announce hardware based around the new platform.

Turns out the 4.8 inch gorilla glass, 1.5GHz ATIV S is the first as Microsoft handed that privilege to Samsung.

Which is a smart move by?Microsoft. There may be a special relationship with Nokia through a mix of patents, marketing support, and software contributions to the OS, but Microsoft is going to want to remind them that it?s not quite a partnership of equals. When Nokia and HTC had LTE Windows Phone ready to announce at CES earlier this year, the lead handset honours were handed to HTC.

Nokia made enough noise on their own with the Lumia 900 during January, and the same is likely true with whatever device will be announced next week.

Samsung?is likely in need of a corporate hug after the bruising picked up last week. Whether by design or by happenstance, they?ve been able to show that they can do something ?other than ape Apple? in the eyes of the media with this new handset.

This sort of give and take between suppliers is classic Redmond. With Microsoft?s help, Samsung can show off a new user interface, a different way of handing a smartphone UI, and to show they can design a modern and stylish smartphone.

Now let?s see how it does with consumers.

Endangered tiger cubs caught on camera

Two endangered tiger cubs and their mother have been caught on film in Thailand near the site of a proposed hydroelectric dam.

The black-and-white footage, taken in May, shows a mother tiger investigating a camera trap near the Mae Wong River. After a moment, her two cubs bound through the woods after her.

The tigers are three of the fewer than 300 wild Indochinese tigers left in Thailand, according to the WWF, which released the video of the cubs and mama tiger, along with the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

Panthera tigris corbetti is an endangered subspecies of tiger found only in southeast Asia. Conservation agencies estimate that there are fewer than 1,500 in the wild today, with Thailand hosting a few hundred. According to the advocacy group Tigers in Crisis, one Indochinese tiger is lost to poachers each week, on average. The big cats are also threatened by shrinking habitats and loss of prey. [ See Tiger Cubs Video ]

Now, environmental groups are crying out against a proposed $400 million dam project on the Mae Wong River. The dam would inundate more than 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) of land in Mae Wong National Park. The dam, and others planned along with it, would also cut the region's fish supply by 16 percent, according to a study released Monday by WWF and the Australian National University. That food supply would have to be replaced by agriculture, according to the report published in the journal Global Environmental Change.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Boy finds a bonanza in whale vomit

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: An 8-year-old boy in England could be up to $63,000 richer, thanks to a piece of solidified whale vomit he picked up on the beach.

    2. Scientists study dinosaurs' last meals
    3. Pigeons vanish in the 'Birdmuda Triangle'
    4. Glowing fish help seals hunt in the dark

The WWF and other conservation groups worry that the dam project would also bring new roads into tigers' forest habitat. Those roads, in turn, may bring more poachers into the region.

"The good news is that the footage tells us our tiger conservation efforts are on the right track and that this area is succeeding in helping wild tigers reproduce," Rebecca Ng of WWF's Greater Mekong program said in a statement. "If the dam is built, it will literally wash away years of conservation efforts and risks the future of tigers in Thailand."

The Thai government says that the project will help ease problems of drought and flooding in the region, according to the Bangkok Post. Environmental groups are taking the issue to court, filing a complaint with the country's Central Administrative Court alleging that the prime minister and Cabinet violated the constitution by approving the Mae Wong dam before environmental impact studies were completed.

faithtuppers - Evolution of the Home Computer | Computer How To ...

Guest post by Paul Faulk.

In today?s times, having a home computer has become a necessity for families to keep in touch with the social world, do online research, or simply browse the web. Having a home computer has not always been a common household item, however. The home computer has gone through decades of technological upgrades to reach its modern status leading up the world of search engines and SEO that we know today.

computer evolution

Origins of the Home Computer

The first freely programmable computer was created in 1936, and it took years of programming, technological development, and research to evolve the computer into a room-sized processing machine. Computer powerhouse Hewlett-Packard is founded in 1938 in a Palo Alto garage, where David Packard and Bill Hewlett designed an audio oscillator which became a popular piece of testing equipment for computer engineers across the nation. HP entered the consumer computer business after creating the HP-2115 computer that offered computational power that could originally only be found in massive computer systems.

In 1944, a professor from Harvard University completed the Harvard Mark-1. This massive computer filled an entire room and was built to produce mathematical table. During the 1940s, companies on the allied side of the second World War were constructing computers to decipher secret Nazi codes that were intercepted, a function that today?s computers would not need to do.

In 1958, Texas Instruments built the first integrated circuit for computers.?After nearly two more decades of program research and increases in technology, famous computer mastermind Bill Gates and partner Paul Allen found the Microsoft Corporation in 1975. A year later, the late Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and began selling Apple 1 computer boards.

computer mess

Modernized Home Computers

The 1980s brought a wave of computers for personal use. IBM introduced its own PC in 1981, which ignited the the rapid growth of smaller more compact personal computers for home use. The Osborne 1, created by Adam Osborne, was the world?s first portable computer. This 24 pound machine cost around $1800 and had a five inch display screen. Commodore introduced the C64 in 1982. It is recognized today as the highest selling computer model in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Apple launched its first iconic Macintosh computer in 1984, which was the first mouse-driven computer with a graphic user interface. In 1990, the world wide web as we know it was created. A physics laboratory in Geneva created what they called the HyperText Markup Language, or HTML, and the HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. In order to browse the web, the Mosaic web browser was released in 1993. This program allowed graphic content for access on the Internet.

The improvements to the computer made from the 1930s to the 1990s is nothing compared to the technology of today. Researchers today are working on virtual reality, processors the size of needles, and improved resolutions on portable computers. Technology today is growing exponentially, so in upcoming years we can expect great things to be created.

Overview of the history of SEO

After Yahoo launched and became a great success in the early 90s, the popular search engines of today Google and DMOZ launched in 1998. Because of Google?s success, Yahoo dropped their Altavista program to use Google?s algorithm. In Google?s algorithms, page rankings were displayed to users through the toolbar. This then had a significant impact in the business world, because companies then desired to rank higher up on search engine search results pages.

SEO

Thus, SEO was born. Search engine optimization allowed businesses to beat their competition and appear higher on search results. To do this, companies manipulated the Google algorithms to make their website rank. It all involves having a large amount of content and referring domains for your website. Google then sees these websites as having a strong supporting background and legitimacy, so they rank these sites higher than others. Google then introduced their Caffeine Algorithm in 2009, which caused a major shift in SEO because companies had to change their SEO tactics. In addition, Google had a Panda Algorithm Update in 2011, followed by a Penguin Algorithm Update in 2012. This updates to the search programming made SEO even more difficult for companies.

Essentially, early computers were not designed around search engines. But recently, computers focus on social more than ever. Companies are focusing on getting their name out there, and through search engine optimization, they can do so.

?Avengers? Star Stellan Skarsgard Welcomes His Eighth Child ...

By Erin Minty

Stellan Skarsgard, 61-year-old actor and father, welcomed his eighth child to the world on Friday.? Skarsgard and his wife, Megan Everett, now have two children together, 3-year old Ossian and now a new baby boy, according to E! Online. One of his most famous sons, Alexander Skarsgard, is one of the stars from True Blood; perhaps the newest member of the Skarsgard family will be just as talented. The Avengers star and his wife have been married since January of 2009, and the relationship is still going strong.

What are some ways to keep your relationship strong when you have multiple children?

Cupid?s Advice:

Relationships can be hard work, and they sometimes take a back burner when the addition of multiple children appears.? Here are a few ways to keep your relationship fresh and strong after having kids:

1. Spend some time out:? Alone time is hard to come by with a load of little kids running around, but it is crucial in keeping a relationship alive. Take one night a week to get dressed up and go out to dinner or a movie with your spouse. Hiring a good babysitter could be the one thing your relationship needs to get back on track.

2. Be affectionate: This doesn?t have to be much, but a small touch like holding hands on the couch or giving your partner a hug can remind them that there is still a strong connection between the two of you. Even when your lives are hectic with children, take a second to touch your partner and establish the connection you two share.

3. Talk: Sometimes, your lives can be taken over by the presence of kids. One way to keep the relationship strong is by having real conversations?talking and listening?when the kids aren?t the center of attention. Having conversations about yourselves and not your children can be one way to strengthen your relationship.

How do you keep your relationship strong after having multiple kids? Let us know below!

Research as a Second Language: Comparative Hackery, Part 2

"Paul Krugman's ? reputation as an economist has declined precipitously since he began writing [his NYT column]." (Niall Ferguson)

"Niall Ferguson devoted a column in the Financial Times to defending himself against something I said in a panel discussion. I can't imagine doing that!" (Paul Krugman)

I often tell that story about Paul Krugman's lecture in my writing seminars. My explanation for Krugman's intellectual composure, which, unassisted by slides or a script, is able to produce a coherent, articulate 45-minute lecture on the financial crisis, is that he must write often. In fact, we know he writes a weekly column for the New York Times, which isn't quite enough to explain it, but certainly evidence of a regular writing habit. For my part, I compose one of these blog posts every morning. This, I would argue, goes a long way towards explaining how I can deliver anything from a ten-minute contribution to a faculty meeting to a three hour seminar about how to improve your scholarly writing essentially at will. (I like to have a bit of warning, of course, but mainly to help me enjoy it and develop the presentation a little each time.) And there's a reciprocal relationship at work: I write about things that I talk about often and then write about and talk about.

Ferguson must, of course, also write often. So what is the difference? Well, based on my limited knowledge of how either man works, I can only guess. But it is my impression that Krugman uses his opportunities for public speaking (and probably also his academic opportunities, whether in the literature or in the classroom) to state his views. When, in my seminars again, I define "knowledge" in the classical way as "justified, true belief", I always emphasize that last word. You should not only write true and justified claims. You should write down what you believe. If you don't really believe what you are saying, you don't know what you are talking about. This, I suspect, is harmful to your style.

The working theory among Ferguson's critics these days is that he writes and speaks in public not to express his actually held views but to impress his highly influential audience. (In the case of the Newsweek piece this was suggested as his main goal. The fact that he also seemed to be writing to mislead the broader public was merely a means to an end. He was showing the powerful how useful he could be to them in their attempts to manipulate the powerless.) The charge here is intellectual dishonesty. (Eric Garland makes this charge explicitly. Krugman, for his part, says what Ferguson did was "unethical".) He is saying something he does not believe in order to produce a particular effect in audience. (Given the way he distorts his sources, it is hard to imagine he doesn't understand himself that they don't support his argument.) This also, to my mind, explains why Ferguson's public speaking (and writing, actually) seems much more "affected" than Krugman's. Ferguson is obviously acting, performing. Krugman is just speaking his mind. He has something to say and, although it's something he's said before, he is saying it off the top of his head. Ferguson appears to be delivering little, "bits" prepared for the occasion.

I'll drop this subject now. Truthfully, I don't have much of a horse in this race. I'm neither an economist nor a historian. I only envy the lively and detailed discussion that this case has been witness to. I wish we could have a similar discussion about intellectual honesty in organization studies. This is not just because it would improve our knowledge of the subject but because it would make the conversation interesting.

'One small step for (a) man': Was Neil Armstrong misquoted?

Upon taking a "small step" onto the surface of the moon in 1969, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one-liners. But strangely, what he actually said is far from clear.

Listeners back on Earth heard, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But?Armstrong, who died Saturday?(Aug. 25) at the age of 82, maintained afterwards that he actually said something slightly different: "That's one small step for a man..."

"It's just that people just didn't hear [the 'a']," Armstrong told the press after the Apollo 11 mission.

That little indefinite article makes a big difference, semantically speaking. Without it, "man" abstractly represents all of humanity, just like "mankind." Thus, the quote is essentially, ''That's one small step for mankind, one giant leap for mankind."?[Listen to 'One Small Step' Quote]

Despite his initial adamance that he got the grammar right by including the indefinite article, Armstrong acknowledged at a 30-year anniversary event in 1999 that he couldn't hear himself utter the "a" in the audio recording of his moonwalk transmission, according to the Associated Press.

But then, in 2006, computer programmer Peter Shann Ford might have vindicated Armstrong.

Ford downloaded the audio recording of the moon man's words from a NASA website and analyzed the statement with software that allows disabled people to communicate via computers using their nerve impulses.

In a graphical representation of sound waves of the famous sentence, Ford said he found evidence that the missing "a" had been spoken after all: It was a 35-millisecond-long bump of sound between "for" and "man" that would have been too brief for human ears to hear.

"I have reviewed the data and Peter Ford's analysis of it, and I find the technology interesting and useful," Armstrong said in a statement. ''I also find his conclusion persuasive. Persuasive is the appropriate word."

And so was "a," whether spoken or not.

New to the world of Leukemia | The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ...

Hi and welcome to the board you never want to join.? Sorry you had to find your way here; and this diagnosis is so new to you your head must be spinning.? Your emotions are totally understandable and we've all cycled through some variation of how you feel.

?

My daughter was diagnosed 7/30/10 with high risk Pre B ALL and will be done with treatment 11/30/12.? She was almost 12 at dx, but has Down syndrome and is not near her chronological age cognitively.? Every child reacts differently, but the first four weeks were absolutely miserable for Lauren.? I'd say the first four weeks were miserable, the next two weeks were bad, and then she started feeling better and the bad times were not as long lived.? They were just now and then.

?

I seriously wondered if it was worth treating her the first couple weeks because she was so miserable.? She was in pain, had mouth sores, sores on her rectum, lost control of her bladder and bowels, her bones ached and she screamed every time she sat on the toilet.? Between the meds, the IV fluids, the medication for high blood pressure and to help her kidneys and liver she was a MESS.? Every time she walked to the bathroom she moaned and cried.? She was zoned out in her own little world and it was awful.? I felt like I had "lost" her and didn't know if she'd ever come back.? It felt like her sparkly little soul had died.? But the good news is, she came back!? Her old sparkly little self started to come back about 4 weeks into treatment.? We also were able to take her off the meds for blood pressure and kidney and liver after about 4 weeks.? There were still some rough times, but not as consistently bad.? After that first month we were up and down, had times she felt good enough to go out for a movie and to restaurants, etc.? She missed all but a few days of school that entire school year, but I don't think any time during treatment was as bad for her as the beginning.?

?

I have never heard that a 2 year old can't be in pain or nauseated.? And quite frankly, I don't believe it and would tell your team that.? I'm sure there are other people on this board who have young children and I'll be surprised if they say their child didn't experience pain.? Think about the different cries babies and toddlers have. With my 2 year old grandson I can tell if his cry means he is just trying to get attention, he is tired, or he is in pain.? We used oxycodone in the first couple months for pain and then haven't needed it much since.? We also used zofran to control nausea and vomiting.? We still have to use zofran and bendadryl when she has spinals or she gags and retches for hours afterwards.?

?

Best of luck to you.? There is also a Facebook group called A.L.L. Moms that is a wealth of information and allows for quicker replies.? You need to be a FB friend of someone in the group to join.? Email me at robbieharding@aol.com if you want to join the group.

Sleep learning is possible: Associations formed when asleep remained intact when awake

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing August 26 in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone -- even when no odor is present -- both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv -- Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed -- namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas -- including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning -- even for a moment -- disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor -- either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present -- by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone -- with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones -- those associated with bad smells -- provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" -- which makes us forget most of our dreams -- may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie -- what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

(AP) ? Arms outstretched in the air with a smile from ear-to-ear, Noriatsu Osaka couldn't contain his glee.

Neither could his teammates from Tokyo after Osaka's third home run of the game put an exclamation point on Japan's 12-2 victory over Tennessee in five innings in the Little League World Series title game Sunday.

The 12-year-old Osaka added a triple for good measure, too, to top off his 4-for-4 afternoon. In a symbolic gesture, Japan's players jogged the traditional postgame victory lap carrying the flags for both their home country and the United States.

"We had such a great time in Pennsylvania and we really played a good game today. It was kind of a, 'Thanks,'" Osaka said through an interpreter.

Starter Kotaro Kiyomiya struck out eight in four innings and added an RBI single for Japan. The game ended in the fifth after Osaka's third homer made it a 10-run game.

"We thought we played the best in the tournament so far, especially to win by the 10-run rule in the finals," said 12-year-old Rintaro Hirano, who homered in the fourth to make it 10-1.

A day after pounding out a 24-16 win over California in the U.S. title game, the Goodlettsville, Tenn., sluggers could only muster two hits ? solo shots by Brock Myers and Lorenzo Butler.

It was a bittersweet final game for two teams that grew close during their two weeks in South Williamsport. They exchanged customary postgame handshakes at the plate before Japan received the World Series championship banner and took their warning-track run.

"Tennessee was our best friends in the U.S. division," Kiyomiya said.

Japan's jog finally stopped in front of the team's giddy cheering section as proud family members and friends stood shoulder-to-shoulder to take pictures through the infield fence.

There were so many highlights, including five home runs off Tennessee pitching.

That was more than enough offense for 13-year-old ace Kiyomiya, who had a fastball clocked in the high-70s, The right-hander with the hitch in mid-delivery pitched like a big-league ace in allowing just one hit.

Regardless, this is still a banner year for Goodlettsville after its exhausting victory Saturday over Petaluma, Calif., for the U.S. championship. That game set a record for most combined runs in the World Series.

The thrilling victory kept the Tennessee players and their families up late into the night.

"(The parents) must have partied harder than the kids did," manager Joey Hale said. "I knew we'd be flat today."

Tennessee lost a 10-run lead in the bottom of the sixth of that game before scoring nine times the next inning to finally put away Petaluma in a Little League classic. Even more impressively, Butler had three homers and a record nine RBIs ? a feat so unique the 12-year-old's name became a trending topic on Twitter.

Butler went deep again off reliever Osaka in the fifth ? Butler's fourth homer in two days ? to cut the lead to 10-2 and give Goodlettsvile some home hope. Tennessee's mini-mashers have proven they can break out any time at the plate.

"It feels really good and it was really great," Butler said simply about his hitting exploits. He said his three homers Saturday were the longest he had hit all season.

Its pitching depth sapped, Tennessee turned to right-hander Justin Smith to start against Japan ? the first time the 12-year-old had pitched in the World Series or in Southeast regional tournament.

"Everybody knew our pitching was depleted and we were bound for a letdown," Hale said. "I'm not saying we were going to beat Japan. I think they were the best team here at everything by far, pitching, hitting. But I think last night is how we want to be remembered."

Leadoff hitter Osaka, 12, didn't waste any time with a first-pitch triple to the right-field corner in the first. Kiyomiya delivered his RBI single two batters later to get the scoring started.

Osaka then homered in the second to left-center, just in front of the "Little League" sign above the fence, before leading off the fourth with his second homer, this time to center, for a 6-1 lead.

The Kitasuna league all-star team from Tokyo won Japan's eighth Little League title and second in three seasons.

While his players danced around in delight after the game, skipper Yoichi Kubo teared up. He kept his composure after managing a team that won the World Series in 2001, "but I was crying this time when we won this game as world champion," he said.

Smith pitched admirably in a tough spot, allowing five runs and seven hits over three innings while striking out three. His team was trying to make history as the first squad from Tennessee to win youth baseball's biggest prize.

Goodlettsville also was the first Tennessee team to advance to South Williamsport since Morristown in 1987. The suburban Nashville crew counts among its fans Rays ace David Price, who is from Murfreesboro.

They might be done with baseball for now, but the celebration is just beginning back home. On Tennessee's social calendar is a visit to the Vanderbilt season opener Thursday night against South Carolina.

"When we get home, it's going to be a carnival," Hale said.

Clock Shock: Federal Debt Nears $16 Trillion Mark

In the time it takes you to read this story, the U.S. debt will have grown by about $4.4. million.

The debt is now lurking just under the $16 trillion mark -- a number huge enough to be almost incomprehensible to the layperson. One way to visualize its magnitude: If you were to spend a dollar every second, it would take you 32,000 years to spend $1 trillion, or a mere one-16th of the debt.

"The national debt is certainly a ticking time bomb. There's no question that if we don't do something about it, it's going to go off," says Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition.

Bixby, like most economists, thinks there comes a point when the debt becomes unsustainable -- when interest payments on the debt alone create an economic implosion.

"We're spending about $200 billion on interest now. That?s much more than we're spending on operations in Afghanistan, more than we're spending on Medicaid," he said.

Compounding the problem are the baby boomers. The first of the tidal wave of Americans born in the post-World War II years are now retiring. Many of them have had their retirement savings diminished by the bursting of the housing bubble and the subsequent recession. More than ever, they're counting on government entitlements in their senior years.

"We're facing this avalanche of seniors moving into Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security. So federal expenditures driven by Medicare and Medicaid are going to go up faster than the economy can grow," Alice Rivlin, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said.

Rivlin thinks the demographic and fiscal storm clouds that once seemed distant are moving closer.

"We don't need to make up scenarios. We're seeing them in Europe even as we speak," she said. "Countries like Greece, but much stronger economies than Greece -- Italy, Spain, to some extent France -- are finding that their debt has risen to a point that they can't borrow at reasonable interest rates."

When governments can't borrow at reasonable rates, homeowners can't either. Paychecks, productivity and investments all suffer.

Adding urgency is the approaching Dec. 31 deadline, when the temporary payroll tax cut and Bush-era income tax cuts expire, and when huge cuts to the military budget and other federal programs may kick in if Congress doesn't act.

This week, Congressional Budget Office Director Doug Elmendorf warned that the fiscal cliff, or "Taxmageddon" as some have termed it, may spark another recession.

"If allowed to occur ... sharp reductions in federal spending and increases in taxes will lead to a dramatic reduction in the federal deficit, trimming it by almost $500 billion next year," Elmendorf said. "That would be a significant tightening of fiscal policy and would probably lead to a recession early next year."

Even so, most economists agree that massive debt is not in and of itself a sign of economic Armageddon.

"What matters more than the level, it's the trajectory," Andrew Fieldhouse of the Economic Policy Institute said. "The trajectory is largely determined by decisions Congress has yet to resolve."

Rivlin agrees.

"We literally can?t do it without stabilizing the rate of health care entitlements over time and stabilizing Social Security and at the same time reforming our tax code so we can raise more revenue," Rivlin said.

But with both parties at an impasse in an election year, the combination of tax increases and spending cuts that most economists agree must happen seem unlikely to come from a deeply polarized Congress.

What clearly would help, economists say, is substantial growth in the economy. Four years of stimulative efforts, while causing yearly trillion-dollar deficits, have not yet made that happen.

Elisabeth Murdoch denies she wants top News Corp job

(Please note that the story contains strong language in final paragraph)

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Elisabeth Murdoch denied on Friday she wanted to succeed her father as head of the News Corp media empire, but acknowledged her role in forcing out one of his favourite newspaper executives over a phone hacking scandal.

Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival, she said that as a daughter it had been heartbreaking to see Rupert Murdoch humbled by the scandal which engulfed his News of the World newspaper, but played down her own ambitions.

"I really harbour absolutely no ambition for a top job (as head of News Corp)," she told a question and answer session.

Elisabeth Murdoch, who runs a television production company, cast herself as the moral face of the Murdoch children following a speech on Thursday evening when she took aim at her younger brother James.

Implicitly criticising his handling of the scandal at the now defunct British newspaper, she said profit with no purpose was a "recipe for disaster", picking up on comments made by James who was once considered their father's heir.

Elisabeth said she had pressed for the resignation of her father's favourite UK director, Rebekah Brooks, during family talks on how to deal with the phone hacking affair which convulsed the Murdoch empire last year.

Asked whether she had urged James to stand back and had said Brooks should resign, Elisabeth said: "Yes."

"It was said within closed walls and Rebekah did resign. She had to resign."

Brooks, who oversaw Murdoch's British newspaper arm, has been charged with illegally intercepting voicemail messages and will appear in court on September 3.

Revelations that News of the World reporters hacked into the voicemails of celebrities, politicians and even a child murder victim caused uproar in Britain. News Corp had to halt a $12 billion (7.6 billion pounds) bid to buy the rest of its British pay TV group BSkyB it did not already own, angering investors and sowing doubts as to whether James had what it took to run the $55 billion empire.

Rupert Murdoch, now aged 81, admitted to an inquiry into the scandal that he was experiencing "the most humbling day of my life".

Elisabeth, who had left the family business after being sidelined in favour of her younger siblings James and Lachlan more than a decade ago, said she had mixed feelings about her father's comment. "I was pleased he said that and I know he absolutely meant it, and if I am honest as a daughter it was heartbreaking," she said.

Some interpreted her public attempt to differentiate herself from her business executive brother James and to showcase her own views on News Corp development as a covert pitch for the top job.

"There's only one way to look at this," Murdoch biographer Michael Wolff told Reuters. "This is part of a strategic repositioning of Liz Murdoch within the media world, within the business world and within the family."

Elisabeth, 44, said she had given Thursday's speech to stand up and be counted, adding that she did not want everybody in the company "tarred or marked with the same brush".

The failure of the company to uncover and address the transgressions cost her brother James his job as chairman of News Group Newspapers and then as executive chairman of News Corp's newspaper arm, although the resignations were strung out as the scale of the failings were laid bare.

James has resigned as chairman of BSkyB and moved to New York.

FAMILY SOAP OPERA

Elisabeth said James had been the sibling focused on the path to the top. "I think the consensus was that James is an incredibly able executive and he is very much the one of us who had chosen to be within the company," she said.

She denied that they were fighting to follow in the footsteps of their father in a modern day soap opera equivalent of a court battle for the throne of the Murdoch empire.

"Everyone sort of likes the idea of the soap opera; the reality is really not that," she said. "It's more speculated upon than I think it merits."

She said that, along with her siblings, she cared passionately about the future of the company, but executive succession was up to the board.

Top managers drawn from beyond the family, such as chief operating officer Chase Carey, are viewed as the current front runners to take over from Rupert at News Corp.

Elisabeth was going to take a position on the News Corp board after the company bought her production company Shine last year, but did not do so as the crisis unfolded.

She had no plans to join the board "at the moment".

"I think and hope the family will be positive contributors even as shareholders in terms of the long-term interest of the company and the other shareholders, but that's really as far as I see it," she said.

Despite the nightmare of the last year, Elisabeth said the family remained close, and she was still "wholly inspired" by her father.

She described in the speech how Rupert had forged her values around the family table. On Friday she said he had also offered some less lofty but more practical career advice when she planned to study for a Master of Business Administration at Stanford University in the United States.

"'You don't need a fucking MBA,' he said. 'Go to Sky and learn about digital television'".
