All day, all night: Obama's long search for votes

(AP) ? Deep in the longest day of his campaign, President Barack Obama was in a Las Vegas casino, gambling that his re-election bid needed one more stop. It was 1:40 a.m. on his clock, and he was pleading with the hotel cooks and waiters for their votes.

"I need you so that I can keep on working for you," he told workers at the Bellagio. His voice was going. And soon, he was going again, too.

Obama's 40-hour blitz across America on Wednesday and Thursday was a sign of how the final campaign of his life will look and feel through Nov. 6. His presidency in doubt, Obama is not just chasing votes. He is chasing time.

The soaring importance of the early voting ? happening now in key states such as Ohio, Nevada, Colorado, Iowa and Florida ? means the president is into the last-minute sprint, with 12 days to go.

"The old model is gone," said adviser David Plouffe, standing in the early darkness in Tampa, Fla., after Air Force One's red-eye flight from Vegas. "Every day is Election Day now."

Even by campaign standards, where the travel days at this stage are supposed to be full of energy and urgency, Obama's trip covered remarkable ground. More than 7,600 miles of it.

And often it has come with Obama boasts about his pace.

"Our 48-hour, marathon-extravaganza fly-around. We are pulling an all-nighter," he said from Denver. "No sleep. Quite a bit of coffee."

Actually, Obama doesn't drink coffee. And he ends up sleeping a little in his bed on the plane. But the all-nighter part sure felt right, the way Obama and his entourage blurred through five time zones to maximize campaign time.

Obama ricocheted from the heartland to Hollywood, from the mountains to the desert, from ocean to ocean. He ate pizza in Iowa, laughed with Jay Leno in California and mocked Mitt Romney into the wee hours of the Nevada night.

"Vote! Vote! Vote!" the president shouted by then, his message shrunk to its essentials.

Along the way, a helicopter for the press broke down. A van carrying his staff wouldn't start. Air Force One hit monster turbulence. But that was just a memory by the time Obama had a spectacular sunset helicopter ride over Los Angeles, or when he saw 15,000 people waiting for him in the Virginia sun.

The itinerary centered on six toss-up states: Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Florida, Virginia, and Ohio. He included California to appear on "The Tonight Show," and Illinois so that he could make a splash of voting early as president.

Obama's campaign day lasted more than 18 hours on Wednesday, technically ending at about 2:30 a.m. EDT. His friends and advisers competed for floor space on the plane to sleep. That didn't last long. Obama was in Florida and campaigning anew by 7 a.m. EDT.

That's when signs of punchiness started to show. Some of Obama's aides broke into dance when a familiar Stevie Wonder song played at the end of his Tampa event. The president sounded hoarse.

"I'm just going to keep on keeping on," he said.

Soily Rivera, a 28-year-old homemaker from Tampa, brought her 6-month-old son Jose Santa Maria to hear Obama. When asked if Obama's marathon trip to the battleground states could show desperation, she shook her head in disagreement.

"No, determination," she said. "Determination. Big time."

That is what Obama's campaign wants voters to see ? a president full of drive and vigor. Yet Obama also has to campaign this hard because he is fighting for survival. Polls show a remarkably close race in all the key states.

He used spare time for political advantage. In separate conference calls aboard Air Force One, Obama spoke to 17,000 campaign volunteers, 9,000 undecided voters and 50 disc jockeys from swing states.

On the ground, Obama kissed babies, took photos with his motorcade drivers and bought doughnuts for firefighters. He joked with one young boy in Aurora, Colo., that he had the same big ears as the president.

"He enjoys days like this," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said during one of Thursday's flights, somewhere over the hills on the way to Virginia. "They're busy. They're hectic. We'll sleep on Nov. 7th."

If Obama accomplished any single goal, it was to educate people that many of them can vote right now, so they don't have to get entangled with work or child-care problems on Election Day.

Back in Denver, Sarah Romero, 51, has gotten off her day job at 2 p.m. for the past two months and headed over to her local Obama campaign office to volunteer for the president through the evening.

She was happy Obama was swinging by Denver. But not blown away by his pace. That's his job.

Said Romero: "They get naps on the plane."

An Evidence Of Web Hosting | Healthuse - Health & Fitness Tips

For those beginning out in internet online affiliate marketing, questions are many. One which I?ve heard more than once is this: Are a domain title and internet hosting the identical factor? The answer is no, they?re not. The confusion may come in as a result of you should buy domains and hosting packages from the same place. Your domain name is your internet site?s tackle, resembling myfirstsite.com. You purchase it from a website registrar, which is an organization that sells domain names. Some examples are GoDaddy, NameCheap, and 1and1. A domain is unique to you; no two people can register the same one. However, needless to say myfirstsite.com is totally different than myfirstsite.web or myfirstsite.org. Domain names are additionally known as URLs (Uniform Useful resource Locators) or as your internet site address?a number of ways to say mainly the identical thing.

The identify you choose ought to relate to what you might be about in some way. In the event you promote dog training provides, use a reputation that implies that. It may very well be one thing like premiumdogtrainingsupplies. You will have to search by way of a number of before you get one that is available. Brainstorm an inventory of potentialities and seek for availability till you get one which works. The name should include your key phrase or phrase, ideally on the very beginning. Avoid utilizing hyphens or different punctuation if possible. You may add a phrase on the finish if your keyword is taken. For instance, using the example above, you would possibly try premiumdogtrainingsuppliesandtips. For those who must add one thing before the key phrase, make it quick and only one word, or on the most, two words. For instance, bestpremiumdogtrainingsupplies might work.

That is also a good way to understand the distinction between shared hosting and dedicated server hosting. There are lots of different individuals renting storage models in that same building, in order that?s similar to shared hosting. You share the server with different internet sites. Dedicated server hosting is where you lease your complete server, so it might be like having your personal storage building. Nobody else could be storing their stuff in your building and utilizing up space. Dedicated hosting is dearer than shared, as you may need guessed. In any case, it?s good to set the area nameservers with a view to ?attach? your domain name to your server. This ensures that when someone sorts your domain identify into a browser, it should know the place to find the online site recordsdata that go along with that domain.

Consequently, whenever an online user makes a request using a browser to view your website, they will have the ability to access it 24/7. Now, where do web hosting domain names come into all of this? Some of the common mistakes that enterprise owners make is failing to recognize the significance of internet hosting domain names when creating an internetsite. In actual fact, the domain title is the first thing that you want to take into consideration ? even before getting in touch with a web hosting provider. Although there?s absolutely nothing improper in settling for another internet hosting area title, the mere indisputable fact that your internetsite has the exact same title as what you are promoting ? adopted with a.com ? will make it easier to your clients to recollect the link to your internetsite.

So, you want area name internet hosting, right? Listed here are the steps you should do to get began and get your internetsite up and running. It would not take much work to get began, but you want to do your homework well. There are literally thousands of companies out there providing one factor or the other related to domain title internet hosting. To set up domain internet hosting, you want two things: Domain title and internet hosting. Many internet hosting firms now provide free domains for those who select to host with them. I do NOT recommend taking on that supply, particularly if the area title is necessary to you, for example your very private domain, or a domain for a business. I like to recommend you to buy the domain title from one of many reputable domain title registrars, and to buy the online hosting separately.

Area title is the bunch of letters and numbers that?s the title of your website. Say, when you title is John Doe, and you want an internetsite called ?Johnswebsite?, that will be your domain name. There?s extra to it, though. You see, there are many Johns on the planet, and so they all would possibly want an internetsite. To help with this, you additionally need to choose an extension. Extension is the bit at the end of the area title:.com,.net,.org,.us and so on ? there are lots of extensions, and extra are coming obtainable all the time. Most people are so used to.com that it?s by far the very best extension to use, if you will get it. With some extensions you?ll be able to play little phrase games. Take extension.me. You possibly can select you area title to be ?johndoeis? and extension ?.me?.

For your personal information, Dreamhost promotions can provide you with the optimal low cost and advertising offer you for Dreamhost, and that?s at the moment an excellent word wide web hosting business on-line.

Cops: Dead man wearing armor found at shooting scene

By NBC News and wire reports

INGLEWOOD, Calif. --?A man found dead at the property where five members of a Southern California family were shot -- two fatally -- was believed to be the attacker because he was wearing body armor and clutching a handgun, police said.

The loaded handgun was a .38 caliber revolver registered to 55-year-old Desmond John Moses. Inglewood police say Moses set his backyard bungalow ablaze before spraying bullets at his neighbors.

Investigators suspect Moses blamed the young family who lived in the front house for an eviction notice he had received from their landlord.

The dead man had "what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head," wore body armor and carried additional ammunition in his pockets when it was found late Saturday, a police statement said.

While police could not conclude that the body is that of Moses until an autopsy is concluded, "the evidence suggests this is the case," the statement added.

The shooting rampage before dawn Saturday killed 33-year-old Filimon Lamas and his 4-year-old son. The father was shielding three of his children when he was shot, Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said. Lamas' 28-year-old wife, Gloria Jimenez, was shot in both legs but managed to carry the wounded 4-year-old out of the house.

Paramedics found her collapsed on the street. The child, who was shot in the head, died at a hospital.

Father dies shielding children from gunman who set home ablaze

Investigators believe Moses entered the family's home around 4 a.m. wearing a dark cap and a white painter's mask, according to NBCLosAngeles.com.

Authorities said he fired 10 times, also wounding a 7-year-old girl in the chest and a 6-year-old boy in the pelvis. An 8-year-old boy escaped injury.

The mother and daughter remained hospitalized in stable condition, Lt. James Madia said. The 6-year-old boy was released.

Authorities launched a manhunt and evacuated surrounding homes after the shooting rampage, but it was not until hours later that they found the charred body because it was hidden under layers of debris.

"He was kind of a hoarder or pack rat," Madia said.

Fighting eviction notice
The landlord told the Los Angeles Times?that Moses had been fighting an eviction notice and recently lost his case in court.

The newspaper reported Sunday that Moses has held a security guard registration with the California Department of Consumer Affairs since 1984. However, police said they did not know whether he was working as a security guard.

Moses lived in the bungalow for 17 years, while the family lived in the front house for 8 years, Madia said. The front house is next door to the home in which Jimenez grew up and where her father still lives. Several of her siblings live on the same block, the Times reported.

Jimenez had been concerned that Moses was "not all there," her brother Jaime told the Times. He said that Moses would only grunt when the family greeted him and complained when the children played in the yard between their houses.

High school sweethearts
Relatives told the Times that Lamas and Jimenez were high school sweethearts who recently got approval for a home loan, and were looking to buy a bigger house for their tight-knit family.

Lamas was part owner of a local diner, neighbors and friends told the newspaper.

"All he breathed was his family," Jiminez's brother?Jaime told the Times.

"All he did, all he talked about, was his family," he told the paper.

President Benjamin Harrison extends borders of Nebraska

On this day in 1890, Benjamin Harrison issues a proclamation that extends the northern boundary of Nebraska into the Dakota territory. The decree also declares that all Indian claims to Nebraska territory have been officially "extinguished."

Harrison was the grandson of famed Indian fighter and treaty negotiator William Henry Harrison, who served one month as president in 1841 before succumbing to illness. The proclamation brought an official end to territorial conflicts in Nebraska between Indians and white settlers that had sporadically erupted from the 1860s to the late 1880s. As white settlement increased in Nebraska after the Homestead Act of 1862 (signed by President Abraham Lincoln), tribes such as the Sioux, Fox, Omaha and Ponca were gradually forced farther north onto reservations that could not sustain a traditional tribal way of life. Many Indians died from malaria, exposure or starvation. Members of the Ponca tried to return to their ancestral homelands in Nebraska and even took their case to court in 1879. The case made national headlines and earned the tribe sympathetic supporters. Although President Chester Arthur signed a decree in 1885 that returned a tiny portion of the Ponca's original lands, he stipulated that all other lands "unselected by" any Indian tribes would be returned to the public domain. This included portions of already established Sioux, Omaha and Ponca reservations. Harrison's proclamation of 1890 re-confirmed the boundaries of Ponca territory within the state of Nebraska and settled the rest of the disputed northern border, speeding settlement of Nebraska by whites.

Federal recognition of the Ponca tribe was officially terminated in 1966. Without their status as a recognized tribe, they lost title to what little land had been left to them by Harrison. One hundred years after Harrison's proclamation, on October 31, 1990, President George H.W. Bush reinstated the tribe, giving them the right to reestablish their homeland in the state of Nebraska.

Team Romney says goal accomplished

(Marc Serota/Getty Images)BOCA RATON, Fla.?To hear Team Romney tell it, Mitt Romney entered Monday's final presidential debate knowing he probably wouldn't score many points against President Barack Obama on foreign policy.

Instead, aides said the GOP nominee's main goal was to simply communicate a "steadiness" on the issues and prove to voters he is capable of being "Commander in Chief." And as they flooded into the spin room minutes before the debate had officially concluded, Romney aides argued their boss did just that.

"One person seemed very presidential, knowledgeable, and the other seemed to be confusing political points and what really matters on big issues," Romney strategist Stuart Stevens said.

Romney's goal was to "talk to people about what he would do as president in a straightforward clear way, and from the very beginning he did," Stevens said. "He addressed the people, and I think you could imagine Gov. Romney as President Romney tonight."

Stevens and other Romney aides argued again and again that voters saw in the GOP nominee someone they could "trust," who was "knowledgeable," and had "good judgment."

"He didn't claim to have the answers for every problem in the world, but acknowledged their problems and their gravity," Stevens said.

Still, Team Romney acknowledged the debate likely didn't change much in terms of how voters viewed the candidates or the main arguments heading into the final two weeks of the campaign.

As Romney heads to Nevada and Colorado Tuesday as part of a swing through the battleground states this week, the GOP nominee is expected to stick with his theme of slamming Obama for not offering a "vision" for what he would do with a second term in office.

"Attacking me is not talking about an agenda," Romney repeatedly argued Monday night?a line that is likely to come up again in the final two weeks of the campaign.

Marissa Mayer Pledges to Take Yahoo Back to Its Roots

Marissa Mayer outlined her plans for Yahoo's future in her first earnings call as CEO of the beleaguered digital media enterprise. The company's third-quarter earnings were better than expected: Earnings-per-share were 35 cents on revenue of $1.09 billion, compared to analysts' estimates of 26 cents per share on revenue of $1.08 billion.

[More from Mashable: Is Yahoo Looking to Scoop Up OpenTable?]

Mayer began the call by talking about recent changes to Yahoo's culture, which has a new commitment to "open dialogue" and "transparency." Employees' quarterly individual goals have been mapped to company goals. They have also been given free phones and free food in an effort to make Yahoo "the absolute best place to work."

Mayer identified Yahoo's "core products" as search, mail, ads, mobile, news and the homepage -- in that order. She emphasized that Yahoo would not change direction dramatically; rather, "[we're] going back to our roots as a consumer Internet company focused on consumer experience," she said.

[More from Mashable: Yahoo Poaches Top Google Exec to be New COO]

"I don?t think there?s a giant pivot... I think this is about improved execution," she added.

Mobile came up repeatedly during the call. "Some point in the future Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company," Mayer acknowledged, adding that Yahoo needed more mobile engineers. She noted that the company recently deployed a redesigned mobile search page across 23 pages, "resulting in increased usage," and that an update to Flickr for Android received "rave reviews."

One analyst asked Mayer whether Yahoo would go after more of the local ad market. "Local ... is very hard to do well," she said, and as the former head of local services at Google, she would know. "I think our local offerings are good at the moment [and] I think it's hard to take that next step to provide even deeper functionality ... [It's] probably not an area where we're going to invest moving forward," she said.

Mayer and new CFO Ken Goldman both suggested that Yahoo's search partnership with Microsoft has been less than satisfactory, but did not elaborate on their plans to address it.

Goldman did not issue fourth-quarter guidance, saying he had not been with the company long enough. (His first day was today.)

Many had expected Mayer to announce some acquisitions -- namely, that of restaurant reservation service OpenTable, and possibly advertising tool PubMatic and mobile ad company Millennial Media. Mayer said Yahoo does not "have particular acquisitions in mind today" and that any future acquisitions would be "less than $100 million."

NHS encourages frail patients to die at home rather than seek life ...

The NHS are requesting GPs draw up ?Death Lists? of frail patients who are to be encouraged to die at home rather than seek life-saving treatment at hospital, with the objective of saving the government ?1.35 billion a year.

The Liberal Democrat Care Minister Norman Lamb has unveiled the NHS Death List ?tool kit? that GPs and Social Workers will use to identify patients to be encouraged to die. ?The ?toolkit? makes clear that a quarter of all hospital beds are occupied by dying people and said that? four in ten have no medical need to be there. ?It goes on to state that if each had one less emergency admission into hospital in their last weeks and? months, that would save the NHS ?1.35billion a year.

The ?tool kit? tells doctors: ?After several years of falling, the death rate is about to increase again as the baby boomers reach old age. This is a bad situation, which is going to get worse unless we act now.?

The government?s euthanasia plan is being disguised under the euphemism ?End of Life Care Registers? which claim to have patients best interests at heart, so they can die in comfort in their homes.

GPs have been asked to select one in every 100 of their patients likely to die over the next 12 months?to go on a ?Death list?. The GPs will not tell their patients or families that they have been selected for the ?Death List? but instead will encourage them to make Living Wills that request that nutrition and hydration are withdrawn if they become incapacitated and that they are not?resuscitated.

The NHS is distributing Death ?tool kits? not only to GPs but also to?health and social workers, which provide guidance on how to select patients for the ?Death Lists.?

It states that ?approximately? 1 per cent of people on a GP?s list [of all patients] will die each year ? this equates to an average of 20 deaths a year. Around 70 per cent to 80 per cent of all deaths are likely to benefit from planned end-of-life care.?

It said: ?Have your local practices identified the 1 per cent of their practice population who may be likely to die in the next year??

Doctors are told to pick out such patients during routine consultations that show? ?indicators of frailty and deterioration? and are told that? ?older people are a priority? to consider?.

They are also told to use feedback from district nurses or hospital consultants, while patients in care homes should be ?actively considered for your register?, the advice states.

Information for GPs on what happens to such patients said they would be ?less likely to be subject to treatments of limited clinical value?.
The Daily Mail reports:

Thousands of patients have already been placed on ?death registers? which single them out to be allowed to die in comfort rather than be given life-saving treatment in hospital, it emerged last night.

Nearly 3,000 doctors have promised to draw up a list of patients they believe are likely to die within a year, Department of Health figures showed yesterday.

Some medical professionals went public with their worries yesterday following the Daily Mail?s disclosure of the NHS request to doctors to put one in every 100 of their patients on death lists.

?

Dr Peter Saunders, of the Christian Medical Fellowship, warned about the risks of drawing up ?quotas? for the dying.

?We all know that doctors? estimates of patients? lifespans can be sometimes accurate but sometimes wildly inaccurate,? he said.

?A skilled doctor can in the great majority of cases assess when a patient is within a few hours or days of death. However, once we start to talk about weeks or months we know that we can often be right, but equally very badly wrong.?
NHS plans to creat ?Death Lists? emerged at the same time that the government rejected calls from the Catholic Church to review the misuse of the Liverpool Care Pathway:

The Archbishop of Southwark wrote to the Secretary of State for Health last month, urging him to launch a ?thorough and urgent investigation? into the controversial care pathway.

In a letter dated September 27, Archbishop Peter Smith expressed concern to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt about the growing controversy surrounding the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP).

He wrote: ?It does seem to me that a thorough and urgent investigation needs to take place, examining the evidence on which the criticisms that have been made of the LCP rest, so that conclusions can be reached as to whether any corrective action is needed.?

Archbishop Smith added: ?If the allegations that are being made can be substantiated, there is serious cause for concern either that the LCP is in some way structurally unsound and needs to be modified or that some doctors and nurses are failing to implement the guidelines as intended.

?Equally, if the allegations are without substance, dying patients and their loved ones are at risk of being caused needless anxiety as a result of which they may well seek to avoid treatment and care from which they would benefit.?

The LCP, which is used by hospitals as a framework to guide medical care of the dying, faced fresh criticism this week after it was reported that an 85-year-old woman had died alone at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital because medics allegedly did not consult her family before placing her on the pathway.

According to reports, Olive Goom died without family or friends as hospital staff had assured relatives that there was no urgent need to visit, although they had already removed her tubes, which provided food and fluid.

Dr Anthony Cole, the Catholic chairman of the Medical Ethics Alliance, said: ?The LCP is inherently hazardous and it is also unnecessary. Excellent end of life care can be delivered without referring to the LCP framework. It is time for an inquiry by the Department of Health into how the LCP is actually operating.?

But a spokeswoman for the Department of Health told The Catholic Herald that it would not be launching an official inquiry into the LCP.

She said: ?We would expect all trusts to investigate any reports of abuse or clinical failure and to act accordingly.

?The Liverpool Care Pathway is supported by leading clinicians and charities such as Marie Curie and is NICE [National Institute for Clinical Excellence] recommended. We continue to fully support its proper use as a way of managing a patient?s care with dignity and respect in their last days.?

Jim Dobbin, a Catholic MP and co-chair of the Dying Well All Party Parliamentary Group, which opposes euthanasia and promotes palliative care, has expressed the group?s support for an inquiry.

Protect the Pope comment: With the unquestioned use of the Liverpool Care Pathway and GPs creating ?Death Lists? the government is putting plans in place to create a euthanasia conveyor belt for the Baby Boomer generation.

The Care Minister?s toolkit makes it clear that the NHS sees the ageing Baby Boomers as a ?bad situation, which is going to get worse unless we act now.? Acting now means persuading them, without their knowledge of the government?s plans, that they decline life-saving treatment in favour of dying in comfort at home on the Liverpool Care Pathway, which will lead to hydration and nutrition being withdrawn if health care professionals and social workers decide that they are dying. If they become agitated, then they will be heavily sedated to ease their ?passing?.

The objective of saving the NHS ?1.35 billion a year is being dressed up as being in the best interests of frail patients. Being told that you?re going to die soon and you have a choice of dying at home surrounded by loved ones or in hospital where you?ll be a burden on the State, what do you think old people will choose?

The Latest : Inglewood family of 6 shot, two killed, house set on fire ...

Update 12:18 p.m.: Police told the Los Angeles Times that the six-year-old shot in the pelvis early Saturday is now out of the hospital. His injured mother and seven-year-old sister are in stable condition, recovering at the hospital.

Update 10:08 a.m.:?INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - An autopsy is pending on a charred body found in the Southern California bungalow belonging to a gunman accused of breaking into a neighbor's home and shooting five family members, killing two of them.

Lt. Cheryl MacWillie with the Los Angeles County coroner's office said Sunday that investigators are still gathering information and the autopsy has not yet been scheduled.

The shooting rampage Saturday killed 33-year-old Filimon Lamas and his 4-year-old son. His 28-year-old wife, Gloria Jiminez, was shot in both legs but managed to carry the wounded 4-year-old out of the house.

Investigators believed 55-year-old Desmond John Moses set his own home ablaze before entering the family's home and opening fire.

Authorities said the body was found during a search of the badly burned bungalow. They will try to determine if the body is that of Moses.

Update 8:48 a.m.: Police found a body in the Southern California bungalow they believe to belong to a gunman who is accused of breaking into a neighbor's home and shooting five family members, killing two of them.

The shooting rampage before dawn Saturday killed a father, who was shielding two of his children, and his 4-year-old son, Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta said. His 28-year-old wife was shot in both legs but managed to carry the wounded 4-year-old out of the house.

Paramedics found her collapsed on the street. The child, who suffered a bullet wound to the head, died at a hospital.

"Their efforts were certainly heroic," the chief said. He called the shooting spree a horrific crime.

Investigators believed Desmond John Moses, 55, set his own home ablaze before entering the family's home around 4 a.m. wearing a dark cap and a white painter's mask.

Authorities say he fired 10 times. In addition to the deaths of the father and child and injury to the mother, a 7-year-old girl was wounded in the chest and a 6-year-old boy suffered a bullet wound in the pelvis. An 8-year-old boy escaped injury.

The mother and daughter remained hospitalized in stable condition, Inglewood Police Lt. James Madia said. The 6-year-old boy was released.

Authorities announced late Saturday night that the body was found during a search of the badly burned bungalow. The now finished investigation took hours because it was packed with debris, which ranged from hiking boots to little children's toys to books.

"He was kind of a hoarder or pack rat," Madia said.

He said police planned to continue looking for Moses until an autopsy can identify the body.

Madia said Moses lived in the bungalow for 17 years, while the family lived in the front house for 8 years.

Fronterotta would not discuss the nature of the dispute, but the property owner told the Los Angeles Times that Moses had been fighting an eviction notice and recently lost his case in court.

A woman who knew the family, Judy Castellanos, told the Times that the suspect was reclusive and would not let anyone look inside his home.

"He had been asked to leave by the end of this month," she told the newspaper.

After the shooting, police evacuated about 15 nearby houses to search for Moses while firefighters and investigators sifted through Moses' bungalow to determine whether he returned there after the shooting.

The names of the family members have not been released pending notification of relatives.

Update 4:44 p.m.:?"Our SWAT team is still working in the burnt building and we still have several units doing grid searches throughout about a 2 1/2 block radius around the site,?Lt. James Madia of the Inglewood Police Department said at a press conference. "We've put out a crime broadcast to agencies around the county. And we're starting to work with our partners at the federal level to get the word out so we can start expanding the size of the manhunt."?

Previously:

The shooting spree began around 4:30 a.m. this morning?at a residence on the 4900 block of W. 99th Street near the 405 freeway.

Five neighboring houses have been?evacuated as a SWAT team is using police dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the?property, Inglewood Police?Chief Mark Fronterotta told KABC.

"Right now we?re looking for a male black, 55, 5 foot 6, 160 pounds, wearing a dark ball cap and at the time of the shooting was wearing what people describe as a painter's mask,"?Lt. James Madia of the Inglewood Police Department told KPCC.

According to KTLA, officials say the home was set on fire prior to the gunfire. Firefighters were initially hampered from fighting the fire, which included the back guest house, because of the gunman who was believed to have been holed up in one of the structures.

Officials say a 6-year-old boy and a 7-year-old child are in critical but stable condition. Their mother was shot in the knee and the pelvis as she was trying to carry the youngest child out of the house.?The chief says the father was shielding two of his children when he was?shot.

Police have no?motive, but the gunman may have been a tenant who was recently evicted.

Meanwhile an 8-year-old child was also rushed to the hospital but doesn't seem to have any serious injuries.

Officials are asking neighbors stay inside their homes until the suspect is apprehended.

Syria envoy presses Damascus for ceasefire

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - International mediator Lakhdar Brahimi met Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem in Damascus on Saturday, pressing for a brief ceasefire between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels seeking his overthrow.

Brahimi has called for a ceasefire during next week's Islamic Eid al-Adha holiday to stem the bloodshed in a 19-month-old conflict which activists say has killed at least 30,000 people and claimed the lives of 220 more on Friday.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said the talks were "constructive and serious" and that Brahimi and Moualem discussed "objective and realistic ways of halting the violence by either side, to prepare the ground for comprehensive dialogue between Syrians".

It added that dialogue, rather than foreign intervention, was the only way to resolve the crisis.

Syria has so far given a guarded response to Brahimi's ceasefire proposal, suggesting it wants guarantees that rebels would reciprocate any move by Assad's forces.

Brahimi, the joint U.N.-Arab League special envoy for the Syria crisis, has been criss-crossing the region with the aim of convincing Assad's main backers and his foes to support the idea of a truce during the holiday, which starts at dusk on Thursday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has called for all sides to observe the three or four-day ceasefire. Iran, one of Assad's major backers, has also supported the call but added that the main problem in Syria was foreign interference, such as arming the rebels.

The United States, which has been a vocal critic of Assad but has little apparent influence on the ground, threw its weight behind the ceasefire call on Friday.

"We urge the Syrian government to stop all military operations and call on opposition forces to follow suit," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

A previous ceasefire in April collapsed after just a few days, with each side blaming the other. Mediator Kofi Annan resigned his post in frustration a few months later.

VIOLENCE CROSSING FRONTIERS

The violence has spread across Syria's frontiers. Assad's forces exchanged cross-border artillery fire with Turkey several times this month and on Friday a huge car bomb in Beirut killed a top intelligence official whose investigations had implicated Syria in trying to stoke violence on Lebanese soil.

Syria's Information Minister Omran Zoabi condemned the bombing. "We condemn this terrorist explosion and all these explosions wherever they happen. Nothing justifies them," he told reporters on Friday.

Next week's truce would be self-imposed, with no international observers, and there has been no sign of a reduction in violence ahead of the Eid holiday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported heavy clashes on the main north-south highway connecting Damascus with Aleppo on Saturday. The highway town of Maarat al-Numan and villages around it in Idlib were shelled, after rebels took the area a week ago.

It said a reported 60 people had been killed in Syria by nightfall on Saturday.

The United States has repeatedly said it believes Assad must step down to allow for a political transition in Syria, and blamed Russia and China for blocking moves at the U.N. Security Council aimed at increasing pressure on his government.

Russia and China, joined by Iran, say they are opposed to foreign intervention in Syria and accuse Western powers of working with Arab allies in the Gulf to support Syria's armed opposition in a conflict that appears to be heading toward a sectarian proxy war.

Turkey's Davutoglou, speaking in Sanaa on Saturday, said Yemen's power transfer deal which allowed President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down was no longer a suitable model for Syria.

"The Yemen solution was suitable for Syria nine months ago," he said. "But now, because every country has its own special circumstances and due to the latest developments on the Syrian arena which saw the use of artillery and the air force in bombarding Syrian cities, this has narrowed the room for implementing such solutions."

Video: Romney bullies small business owners into telling their ...

A publication called In These Times has obtained an exclusive recording of a conference call Mitt Romney made to business owners on June 6 of this year in which he explicitly states that they should pressure their workers into voting for Romney if they want to keep their jobs, taking care to note that doing so isn?t technically ?illegal.?

At around twenty-six minutes into the call after talking at length about how bad Obama has been for business, Romney states:

I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections. And whether you agree with me or you agree with President Obama, or whatever your political view, I hope, I hope you pass those along to your employees.

(AP) ? George Steinbrenner would have issued a public apology.

After leading the league in wins this year, the New York Yankees didn't just lose to Detroit in the AL championship series. They got swept in one of the more humiliating moments in the team's history.

The four-game wipeout made headlines ? A-Rod's benching, Derek Jeter's injury, Robinson Cano's slump. But it also revealed serious cracks in the foundation, showing a team full of aging All-Stars at the plate, in the field and on the mound that suddenly seems a long, long way from championship caliber.

"Obviously, we're all getting older," Andy Pettitte said Thursday night after the season-ending 8-1 loss to the Tigers.

Jeter broke an ankle near the end. Mariano Rivera busted a knee back in the spring. The Yankees transformed baseball's bruisers into the Bashed Bombers, closer to AARP years than MVP seasons.

Alex Rodriguez was so bad, the $275 million man was benched in three of nine postseason games and pinch hit for in three others, a possible prelude to a forced departure from pinstripes.

Six key players didn't hit their weight, with Rodriguez joined by Cano, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Russell Martin and Eric Chavez.

His life already a soap opera off the field, A-Rod turned into daily fodder for on-field intrigue.

"It wasn't just one guy struggling," Rodriguez said. "It was a collective group, and it was a very unique situation."

Not quite. They floundered for two months, nearly blowing a 10-game lead in the heat of summer before holding off Baltimore on the final night for the AL East title.

Easily the oldest big league team at the season's start, they're on track to start next year with a 38-year-old shortstop with limited range coming off ankle surgery (Jeter), a 43-year-old closer returning from knee surgery (Rivera), a 37-year-old third baseman overpowered by right-handed pitchers (A-Rod), a 40-year-old left-hander who missed nearly three months because of a broken ankle (Pettitte) and a 38-year-old right-hander who topped the team in starts and innings (Hiroki Kuroda).

Their postseason star was a 40-year-old outfielder (Raul Ibanez), their center fielder struck out 195 times (Granderson), their left fielder played just 17 regular-season games because of an elbow injury (Brett Gardner) and their catcher hit .211 (Martin).

"It's difficult. It's disappointing. It's not where we want to be," general manager Brian Cashman said. "I'm very surprised."

Their .188 postseason batting average was the lowest ever for a team that played at least seven games. Rodriguez took the brunt of the blame.

Owed $114 million over the next five seasons, Rodriguez became the world's most expensive pinch hitter during the ALCS, a platoon player against left-handed pitchers on a team facing four righty starters.

"I've never thought about going to another team. My focus is to stay here. Let's make that very, very clear," he said. "Number two, I don't expect to be mediocre. I expect to do what I've done for a long time."

Yankees president Randy Levine joked in April with Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria about the possibility of dealing A-Rod to his hometown team.

"Take him. Tell me what you're willing to do," Levine said before the pair laughed.

After this debacle, talk could turn serious. The Yankees likely would have to eat 50 to 75 percent of what Rodriguez is due, but they may focus on the millions saved rather than the millions spent.

Back in 1981, after the Yankees took a 2-0 Series lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers and lost four in a row, George Steinbrenner issued one of his most famous statements, saying: "I want to sincerely apologize to the people of New York and to the fans of the New York Yankees everywhere for the performance of the Yankee team."

Hal Steinbrenner, who succeeded his father as controlling owner, is less impetuous. He wants to get the team under the $189 million luxury tax threshold in 2014.

Sending one of their lineup's senior citizens to finish his career in Florida would be a start.

Proud of his accomplishments and in constant need of admiration, Rodriguez may hold his postseason putdown against manager Joe Girardi.

"As far as I know, we're OK," Girardi said. "It's not something I wanted to do. All of you know that. But I don't have any signals that he's mad at me."

A-Rod, as always, tried to say the right thing.

"If I do what I'm supposed to be doing, neither Joe or Cashman can bench me," he explained.

His stay in New York always was a marriage of money.

After giving A-Rod a record $252 million contract, Texas traded him to the Yankees after three seasons and even agreed to pay $67 million of the $179 million remaining ? an amount reduced by $21 million when A-Rod opted out of that deal following the 2007 season. Then the Yankees re-signed him to an even more massive megadeal, as much a weight on their payroll as his bat has become in the batting order.

After failing to win the World Series for the third straight year, there will be a slew of decisions. Exercising $15 million options on Cano and Granderson are a given, as is signing Rivera for 2013. They'll likely try to persuade Pettitte to pitch another year and attempt to re-sign Kuroda and possibly Ichiro Suzuki, whose bat was among the few with a sign of life.

Swisher seems set to depart and Ibanez could be one older player too many. Rafael Soriano, who filled in for Rivera, could turn down a $14 million salary for next year, terminate his contract and become a free agent.

"Every year the roster changes," Cashman said.

By now, the front office knows it needs an injection of youth. The wipeout may speed the turnover.

"We got a team of Hall of Famers, superstars," Cano said.

And by the time a player is almost certain of enshrinement in Cooperstown, it means the end is a lot closer than the beginning.

Motte goes 2, makes Cardinals' wait worth it

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Jason Motte had a lot more time than usual to get ready, learning the plan before the grounds crew took the tarp off the field. It was nice to get some advance notice before going for the first two-inning save of his career under October pressure.

The San Francisco Giants went six up and six down against the St. Louis Cardinals' hard-throwing closer, thrust into an extended appearance by a rain delay that lasted longer than Game 3 of the NLCS. Motte needed just 19 pitches to complete a 3-1 victory that was worth the wait Wednesday night, putting the defending World Series champions up 2-1 in the series against the 2010 World Series titlists.

"I've never had a situation where I've known that far ahead of time," said Motte, who has saved both of St. Louis' victories in the NLCS and has three saves in the postseason. "You know, you're usually watching the game and you prepare yourself that way.

"I went to the bullpen a little early and got my arm loose and I was able to get the job done."

Rookie Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the NLCS after subbing for the injured Carlos Beltran and the Cardinals chased Matt Cain just before a 3?-hour rain delay in the seventh inning.

Beltran strained his left knee running out a double-play ball in the first inning and manager Mike Matheny said he was day to day. He's had issues with the knee throughout the season, but played in 151 games and had 619 at-bats, his most since 2008.

Cardinals pitchers made the lead stand up, beginning with Kyle Lohse, who worked around a season-worst five walks in 5 2-3 innings. The 16-game winner is 2-1 with a 1.96 ERA this postseason after escaping several jams, and has allowed two or fewer runs in all three of his starts.

"I made up a word. Grindy, very grindy," Lohse said. "Just one of those days where I knew warming up it was not quite coming out the way I wanted it to."

Setup man Mitchell Boggs pitched earlier than usual, too, bailing out Edward Mujica. Boggs struck out Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt with two on to end the seventh as the storm approached.

Motte made it a rewarding finish for what remained of a sellout crowd of 45,850 ? perhaps a third ? in a game that lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes. He was ready to go for Game 4, too.

"I feel great," Motte said. "This time of the year, you're ready to go every single day."

Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro had two hits and a clean game in the field, two days after Matt Holliday rammed into him breaking up a double play. Manager Bruce Bochy had said there would be no retaliation, and Game 3 was collision and controversy free.

"He was determined to play and made a pretty good recovery," Bochy said of Scutaro. "He played well, got some big hits. It says a lot about his makeup, and how tough he is."

Cain lost for the second time this postseason, giving up three runs on five hits in 6 1-3 innings. The Giants, who entered the game batting just .217 in the postseason, were 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners.

Pence, the Giants' fifth-place hitter, also grounded into a double play with runners on first and third in the third and grounded into a force play with a man on to end the fifth.

Except for a hanging slider to Carpenter, Cain was happy with his outing. He's allowed three runs in all three postseason starts.

"I was locating both sides of the plate," Cain said. "Throwing everything for strikes, and getting ahead of guys. This is the best I've felt out of the three starts (this postseason) so far."

The Cardinals snapped the Giants' five-game road winning streak in the postseason, three of them this year. Bochy waited until after Game 3 to announce Tim Lincecum as his starter for Game 4 against Adam Wainwright, and also said Barry Zito would start ahead of struggling lefty Madison Bumgarner in Game 5 against Lance Lynn.

Lincecum has allowed one run in eight innings in three relief appearances in the postseason.

"I think we feel that it's time to give Madison a little break," Bochy said of Bumgarner, who allowed six runs in 3 2-3 innings in Game 1.

Beltran is batting .400 in the postseason with three homers and six RBIs, but Carpenter had big numbers against Cain. Before the homer in the third that put St. Louis up 2-1, he was 4 for 4 for his career against Cain, all four singles.

This one was a much bigger deal, a drive that soared over the Cardinals' bullpen in right field and was estimated at 421 feet.

"All those at-bats were a grind facing him, and it was the same way tonight," Carpenter said. "You don't expect things like that to happen."

The 26-year-old Carpenter entered the game 1 for 5 in the postseason, all five pinch-hit appearances, with an RBI single in the wild-card playoff against Atlanta. He got 14 of his 46 RBIs in April as the primary sub at first base for injured Lance Berkman.

On Tuesday, Carpenter was among a group of seldom-used hitters trying to stay sharp by facing Jake Westbrook in a simulated game. The rest of the team had the day off.

Umpires called for the tarpaulin right after the Cardinals made it 3-1 on a run-scoring single by Shane Robinson and Cain was lifted.

It was the third game delayed by rain this postseason and a fourth, Game 4 of the Yankees-Tigers ALCS, was postponed later Wednesday night. Two games between the Yankees and Orioles in Baltimore began late because of inclement weather.

The rain intensified less than 10 minutes after the field was covered, chasing most fans who had remained in their seats to that point. Spotters for the National Weather Service reported 60 mph winds in nearby St. Charles County.

A highlight of the delay was a Pac-Man style chase. Ushers pursued and finally apprehended a fan who jumped out of the stands to get a baseball near the warning track in left field, and then jutted in and out of aisles to elude several ushers who had been closing in.

The storm had been widely anticipated. Some forecasts called for a 70 percent chance of rain. Both managers fielded questions Tuesday and Wednesday about whether the probability of precipitation would affect their selection of the starting pitcher.

The Giants entered 70-22 when scoring first, including the postseason, and took the lead in the third on Pablo Sandoval's run-scoring groundout after leadoff hits by Angel Pagan and Scutaro, whose legs looked just fine on an opposite-field double flared just over first baseman Allen Craig's glove.

Beltran leads all players with eight extra-base hits in the 2012 playoffs and is a career .375 hitter in the postseason, highest ever among players with a minimum of 100 at-bats.

NOTES: Danny Cox, who pitched for Cardinals World Series teams in 1985 and 1987, threw a perfect strike on the first pitch. ... Microsoft Corp.'s net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers, and as PC sales in general took a dive. The software company's net income was $4.47 billion, or 53 cents per share. That was down from $5.7 billion, or 68 cents per share, a year ago, and exceeded analyst estimates, which had been in the 50-52 cent range. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson, File)

(AP) ? Microsoft Corp.'s net income fell 22 percent in the latest quarter as it deferred revenue from the sale of its upcoming Windows 8 operating system to PC makers ? and as PC sales in general took a dive.

The economic troubles in Europe also weighed on results, which missed Wall Street expectations.

The software company said Thursday that net income was $4.47 billion, or 53 cents per share, in the fiscal first quarter, which ended Sept. 30. That was down from $5.7 billion, or 68 cents per share, a year ago.

Analysts were on average expecting 56 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Revenue fell 8 percent to $16 billion, missing the average analyst estimate of $16.5 billion.

Microsoft shares fell 93 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $28.57 in extended trading, after the release of the results.

The company deferred $783 million in license fees for PCs pre-loaded with Windows 8 because it can't recognize the revenue until the units go on sale on Oct. 26.

It also deferred $384 million in license fees from PCs that shipped with Windows 7 but are eligible for a $15 upgrade to Windows 8.

Lastly, it deferred $189 million for the PCs that shipped with the new version of Office or are eligible for an upgrade.

Excluding those deferrals and other adjustments, net income was $6.66 billion, or 65 cents per share, down 7 percent from last year. Revenue was flat with last year's figure at $17.3 billion.

Excluding the deferrals, revenue for the Windows division fell 9 percent from a year ago, in line with the decline in global PC shipments in the third quarter reported by research firms Gartner and IDC. Consumers held off buying PCs ahead of Windows 8 and probably steered some of their electronics dollars toward tablets and smartphones.

Windows 8 is the most significant revamp since Windows 95 and sports a completely new look that's intended to be consistent across PCs, tablets and smartphones. It's designed from the ground up for touch-sensitive screens, and Microsoft has high hopes that it will keep Windows relevant in a world where tablets are starting to eat into PC sales.

The Business Division, Microsoft's largest, posted a 1 percent increase in revenue, excluding the deferrals for Office.

The Servers and Tools division, which makes software for servers and software developers, was the star of the quarter for the Redmond, Wash., company, posting an 8 percent increase in revenue.

Guest Post: You Have To Know Your Numbers ? It Just Makes ...

In my professional life, I am a scientist (nutritional biochemistry), a pharmacist, the author of 10 books and a health educator. I am also a CrossFit athlete. For years one of my greatest professional passions has been staying on the cutting edge of the science and technology in the ?eld of life extension. I want to share some of my scientific knowledge with athletes because it can help you slow down your aging process.

Most of the athletes I?ve met are passionate about improving their physical ?tness and also understand the importance of eating a healthy diet. Yes, diet and exercise are critically important. However, to really achieve and maintain optimal health, you must also learn how to optimize your internal biochemistry.

I begin many of my lectures and seminars with the following quote:

Life Is The Only Game
In Which The Object of The Game
Is To Learn The Rules

Top athletes are usually in excellent physical condition. However most don?t realize that their intense competition and/or workouts can actually accelerate their aging process. Unfortunately, when it comes to health, many people haven?t had good role models or good teachers. Many people don?t realize that we have a great deal of control over our immune system and our aging process. Gaining this mastery requires learning about and applying some fundamental Rules of Health. Here are some important health topics:

  1. The Free Radical Theory of Aging: The high energy output required for intense exercise dramatically increases the production of free radicals in the mitochondria (the power houses) of muscle cells. It is important to understand how to use therapeutic levels of antioxidant nutrients to reduce free radical damage and slow down your aging process.
  2. SNPs: Learn about your own unique genetic abnormalities. These are called SNPs (pronounced ?snips?) which stands for single nucleotide polymorphisms. Everyone has SNPs. Learning about your SNPs enables you to make diet, nutritional and lifestyle changes that will improve your long-term health.
  3. Know Your Numbers: How high is your homocysteine? What?s your level of C-Reactive Protein? How about your small dense LDL cholesterol particles? How high (or low) is your 25-hydroxy vitamin D level? What is the level of hemoglobin A1c in your blood? Do you have a genetic mutation in your folic acid gene?

You Can Only Improve What You Measure
You have to know your numbers

Traditional medical doctors generally do not provide these answers. The medical profession in America is not a health care system, it is a disease care system. Most doctors do not teach you how to be healthy, they wait for you to get sick, and then they prescribe a medication to treat the symptoms. Don?t play that game. Instead, take personal responsibility for your health.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin and received his Ph.D. in Psychology and Holistic Health from the University for Humanistic Studies in San Diego, California. A Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), Dr. Pelton was named as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Pharmacists in the United States by American Druggist magazine for his work in natural medicine. He is a member of the Medical Advisory Board for the Life Extension Foundation. Dr. Pelton has authored numerous books and teaches continuing education programs for health care professionals to utilize and integrate natural medicine into their practices.
