Advice On Getting A Divorce Marriage is a beautiful bond between two individuals who plan to spend the rest of their lives together till death does them apart. However, there comes a time in some relationships where a number of factors create such a hostile environment for the two people bonded by holy matrimony that they decide to separate from each other and walk on different paths of life thus ending their relationship and getting a divorce.

Getting a divorce from your partner can prove to be an extremely stressful and painful phase of life. The individual who faces such a situation should be given as much support and love from the people who are close to him, as they are learning how to survive emotionally, live alone and adjust to the drastic changes they are suddenly exposed to.

There has been a rapid increase in the divorce rate lately as both the partners have started earning independently, wanting to choose their own lifestyle and live accordingly. Neither of the sexes is ready to compromise or adjust which happens to be a key factor in making a marriage work. In the earlier days, the women would adjust in a given situation and confide themselves in the home, busy with household work and children. Now with more and more woman starting to work, opinions and views are fast-changing, giving way to a modern outlook towards life.

Reasons like misunderstandings, difference in opinion, extra-marital affairs, incompatibility, ego and family issues form the main causes for which a couple may seek a divorce. Often people who are forced to marry someone against their wish also seek to get a divorce in order to get out of the relationship imposed on them. It has a traumatic, life-changing effect with the maximum impact on the children who suffer much more than their divorced parents.

Helpful Tips on Getting a Divorce

Getting Prepared for a Divorce

Taking a firm decision of getting a divorce from your partner is not easy and can result in sleepless nights and anxiety along with a lot of tension in the beginning. Both the partners need to understand that it is better to separate ways and live peacefully than having fights and arguments with each other every day, living in a dreadful environment. However it is advised that every couple should try to solve the problem and differences and give it ?one last try? before finally deciding to separate from each other.

A counselor would surely be of help in this case who can try and solve the problems, helping the individuals start a fresh beginning. If nothing works and divorce is the only solution one should be ready to totally accept it by making up their minds and preparing oneself for the worst scenario possible.

Stay Calm and Be Honest about Everything

After deciding to get a divorce, the couple should try to stay calm and quite without overreacting to situations or creating a fuss about the whole problem.

Advice On Getting A Divorce

One should say whatever they have in their hearts and be honest about the whole issue. People hold back their true feelings thinking that they might be able to stop the divorce at the end, falling in a worse situation than before. You should speak about the problems truthfully and be open as to how you would want the divorce to run.

Keep the Children Out of it

No matter how soar the relationship may have become and whatever the problem may be, the couple should always keep one thing in mind that is to never ever make the children be a part of the whole problem. Children should be kept out of the issues and the couple must realize that their first important role is that of a good parent and not a husband or wife.

The couple should just sit down with the children and talk to them about the arrangement, respecting the child?s views completely; reassuring the child that everything will work out fine and that he is still loved and cared for by both the parents.

Getting the Much Needed Support

Trying to file for a divorce and getting through it alone can make an individual lose his mind because of the high emotional stress and problems associated with it. Thus it is very important for a person to be able to share their feelings with someone with whom they shares a close and personal relationship and can talk freely about all the problems. Close friends, relatives and family members prove to be of great help in such times standing by you, giving you all the care and support you need.

Let the Divorce Happen Quickly and Get Over it

There is no point stretching the issue like a rubber band with the couple blaming each other, fighting and arguing with each other. Once you and your partner have finally decided to call it quits, you should create a situation where the divorce happens quickly and smoothly without any hassles.

Advice On Getting A Divorce

The longer a divorce takes to finalize, more issues are created proving to be difficult for both sides to accept the painful and disheartening experience. Instead of cribbing about the past, the person should concentrate on their future and decide what they wish to do with their life ahead.

Ways to Start Reliving your Life after a Divorce

After the divorce finally comes through, a feeling of loneliness surrounds the person. In such times, it is important to get back your life and happiness with a new beginning. After being divorced, it is a good idea to meet your ex as little as possible as it will continuously remind you of the pain and sadness you have initially gone through.

Taking up an old hobby, going on a vacation, meeting old and new friends, spending time with relatives and children are some ways in which a person can start living their life again, forgetting all that has happened. Thoughts such as getting back together with your ex should be kept away from the mind. This is a temporary phase in your life which will surely pass through, giving way to a new day. A person who goes through a divorce should remember that they are not the only one who is going through such difficult times and that a divorce does not mean the end of your life but only a relationship.

Microsoft Links Security, Ad Teams to Fight Money ... - The Next Web

On Thursday, Microsoft?s security division announced a new initiative to fight cybercriminals pushing malware that makes them money via click fraud. More specifically, the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) has teamed up with the Microsoft Online Forensics team at the Microsoft AdCenter (now simply called Bing Ads).

The company?s reasoning is simple: hit them where it hurts. In an ideal world, if malware becomes unprofitable, cybercriminals won?t make it anymore. While a world without malware is extremely unlikely, Microsoft is hoping to at least cut it down.

Here?s what the company has up its sleeve:

We are intersecting large data sets between malware telemetry and ad-clicks to detect anomalous behavior correlated to malware. And we are taking two relatively disparate domains of expertise and tools, namely malware and online advertising, and creating prevention systems and processes for identifying the entire chain of benefactors of click-fraud malware. In this way, we?re stopping the flow of illicit money at the AdCenter level.

To understand what?s happening here, let?s back up a little. One of the biggest ways people make money online is through ads. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, meaning advertisers only pay when potential customers click on an ad, was created in 1998. Soon after, click-fraud, the fake generation of a click that doesn?t originate from a potential customer, was born.

While anyone can do this (create a site, put PPC ads on it, and start clicking), there are of course ways for advertisers to fight back, such as checking who is clicking to make sure it?s not just a few individuals. When the fraudulent clicks come from various geographies all over the world, each behaving as unique as an individual while browsing the Internet, things can get much more complicated (there?s no simple way to track who benefits directly from a malicious click).

That?s exactly where malware comes in. When threats that push click fraud spread to countless computers, however, everyone loses: users have their computers hijacked and advertisers have to deal with fraudulent clicks. There?s a broader effect, too, as Microsoft explains:

Consumers pay more, albeit fractionally, for products whose marketing revenue is stolen by spurious clicks. Apps and services that are offered free of charge (such as search engines and smart phone games) are supported by online advertising. The overall health of digital commerce depends upon having a safe and secure market place where businesses can thrive.

Cybercriminals meanwhile make a killing if they plan everything out right. Malware authors may make very little money for a single fraudulent click, but if they link up enough publishers, affiliates, and syndication schemes, it can add up and be quite lucrative. In fact, they make millions, which is exactly why they keep doing it.

To further justify all this, Microsoft cites a statistic from NSS Labs: 60 percent to 70 percent of malware today has been written in a way to take advantage of some form of click fraud. So far, Microsoft says it has identified three malicous software families monetizing from click fraud and ?has recouped those ill-gotten gains from the benefactors.?

That?s not exactly huge, but it?s definitely a solid start. It almost makes you wonder why Microsoft didn?t do this before: after all, both its security teams and its advertising teams will benefit if they can cut down on malware authors making money from click fraud.

School of Rock: An Interview with Scott Walton ? UC San Diego ...

In the words of Neil Young, rock and roll can never die. But to find out how it was born, look no further than MUS-40060: History of Rock Music. The online course takes you on a journey through the history of America?s most defining art form, examining how society has shaped the genre throughout the years ? and vice versa. Geared toward musicians and non-musicians alike,?History of Rock Music urges students to make valuable connections between rock music and their own culture.

We checked in with UC San Diego professor Scott Walton to discuss the course, the art of rebellion, and the ways in which rock and roll continues to impact our daily lives.

Q: What was it that drew you to teaching about the history of rock music?

Scott: In high school I was in several rock and blues bands and was completely absorbed with that music. So I?ve always had an interest, and as an educator, teaching rock history is not only a wonderfully engaging topic, but it?s also easy to connect musical developments with socio-political trends.

Q: How will History of Rock Music use the online medium to complement its subject matter?

Scott: Online teaching platforms such as Blackboard provide wonderful tools for sharing and collaboration. In an online setting, students are often more comfortable expressing opinions and engaging in in-depth conversations with their classmates, compared to a large, face-to-face lecture classroom setting. The lecture notes are PDF-based, and once students download the files from our course Blackboard website, they?ll have a useful resource rich with images, links to various websites, and streaming links to audio and video clips.

Q: Rebellion is a key theme of your course. How has rebellion manifested itself in rock and roll throughout the years?

Scott: Almost all popular music in the U.S. over the past century has served as a site for social or political resistance at some point. Early blues musicians were pushing back at Jim Crow, jazz musicians in the ?30s were instrumental in desegregating the entertainment industry, and when rock emerged in the 1950s it was resisting the comfortable Eisenhower-era notions of American life. Everything opened up in the ?60s with rock and soul musicians playing central roles in the civil rights movement, antiwar protests, and the sexual revolution. Activists viewed music as one of the most important emblems of their resistance to mainstream society.

Q: Do you think rock still has the power to affect social and political change?

Scott: I believe it does. One only has to look at the role musicians and actors played in the last presidential election, supporting presidential candidates and helping to get out the vote. Having Bruce Springsteen perform at a political rally gets a whole lot more people out to hear a message!

Q: The phrase ?rock is dead? gets tossed around a lot. Do you agree with it?

Scott: People also say that jazz is dead. You can only make a statement like that if you think way too much, and listen way too little.? :-)

Discover the musical, historical, and cultural context of this 20th century American art form and how it?s shifted our political and social attitudes as a nation over the decades in this engaging online course starting January 14th. Make sure to enroll on or before December 10th to receive a $25 discount off of the registration fee.

(AP) ? You remember that Beatles classic "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"? Turns out Yoko Ono had other things in mind.

Ono's new menswear collection inspired by John Lennon includes pants with large handprints on the crotch, tank tops with nipple cutouts and even a flashing LED bra.

The collection of menswear for Opening Ceremony is based on a series of drawings she sketched as a gift for Lennon for their wedding day in 1969. Ono said she the illustrations were designs for clothing and accessories to celebrate Lennon's "hot bod."

Also in the collection are a "butt hoodie" with an outline drawing suggesting its name, pants with cutouts at the behind, a jock strap with an LED light and a transparent chest plaque with bells and a leather neck strap.

"I was inspired to create 'Fashions for Men,' amazed at how my man was looking so great. I felt it was a pity if we could not make clothes emphasizing his very sexy bod," Ono said in a statement. "So, I made this whole series with love for his hot bod, and gave it to him as a wedding present."

Opening Ceremony hosted a book signing at its SoHo store for Ono for a book that contained the illustrations, and that led to the collaboration to bring them to life. The limited-edition capsule collection, "Fashions for Men: 1969-2002," launched on Tuesday.

"As huge, longtime fans of Yoko's art, we have great respect for her artistic vision, aesthetics, and intellect," said Humberto Leon, co-founder and creative director of Opening Ceremony.

Prices run from $25 for a poster to $200 for a jock strap or $750 for boots with an incense holder or open toes.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525f

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525f ($2,099 direct) is a massive multifunction printer (MFP) with some neat features, including a large touch screen and a built-in hard drive. It's reasonably fast and has good text quality, though it stumbles a bit with graphics and photos. If your office is looking for a rich-featured monochrome MFP for heavy-duty text printing, it's worth a close look.

The M525f can print, scan, copy, and fax; it can scan to e-mail, a network folder, USB thumb drive, or an FTP server, and print from a USB key. It offers secure, password-protected printing.

It measures 22.7 by 20.3 by 21.6 inches (HWD), much too large to share a desk with, and weighs 65.8 pounds. It has the bells and whistles you'd expect for a monochrome MFP at its price, starting with a gorgeous 8-inch color touch screen and a built-in encrypted hard drive. A 50-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (ADF) can copy, scan, and fax two-sided documents, flipping each sheet over in the process.

The M525f has a standard paper capacity of 600 sheets, split between a 500-sheet main tray and 100-sheet multipurpose tray. You can add up to two 500-sheet optional trays as well, for a total paper capacity of up to 1,600 sheets. An automatic duplexer lets you print on both sides of a sheet of paper. On the side of the printer is a built-in stapler, good for documents up to about 25 sheets, which you have to manually insert.

There are two other models in HP's M525 line. The 500 MFP M525dn ($1,799 direct) does not include fax capabilities, and lacks the hard drive and the stapler. The flow MFP M525c ($2,599 direct) has the M525f's features plus a larger (100-sheet) ADF, a duplexing scanner with ultrasonic misfeed detection; a pull-out keyboard; send to SharePoint; and embedded OCR.

The M525f can connect via USB or Ethernet (including Gigabit Ethernet), and an optional Wi-Fi adapter is available ($269 direct). For mobile printing, it's compatible with HP ePrint and Apple's AirPrint. I tested the printer on a wired network with its drivers installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525f

Printing Speed
I timed the M525f on our business applications test suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 12.2 pages per minute (ppm), a decent speed based on its rated speed of up to 42 pages per minute. (Rated speeds are based on text-only printing, while our business suite combines text pages, graphics pages, and pages with both text and graphics.) The HP LaserJet Enterprise M4555h MFP was slower at 10.6 ppm despite a rated speed of 55 pages per minute, while the Editors' Choice OKI MB471, rated at 35 pages per minute, tested at 9.5 ppm.

Output Quality
Overall output quality for the M525f was slightly sub-par, with above-average text quality, slightly sub-par graphics, and below-par photos. Text quality is good enough for any business except perhaps desktop publishing applications using very small fonts.

With graphics, some backgrounds appeared blotchy, and subtle differences in shading were lost in several illustrations. Some thin lines were invisible. Graphics showed dithering in the form of fine dot patterns. Graphics are fine for most in-house use or informal reports, though I'd hesitate to use them for, say, PowerPoint handouts.

Photos also showed dithering, and detail in bright areas was often lost. You can print out recognizable images from Web pages or files, but that's about all.

Running Cost

At 1.8 cents per page, the M525f's running cost is reasonable but not particularly low for a mono laser at its price. In fact, it matches the per-page cost of the far more modestly priced Editors' Choice OKI MB471. The HP M4555h has a running cost of 1.2 cents per page.

The M525f has a wealth of MFP features and a gorgeous 8-inch color touch screen. It costs less than the HP M4555h yet adds fax capabilities, and proved faster in our testing despite a lower rated speed. The HP M4555h, however, has lower running costs, saving you about $6 per 1,000 printed pages, and more paper-handling options.

The much lower-priced OKI MB471 lacks much of the M525f's paper capacity (being limited to 350 sheets standard, 850 max) and goodies like the touch screen and hard drive, but has a very capable feature set, solid speed and output quality, the same running costs, and a slightly lower maximum monthly duty cycle (60,000 pages, as opposed to the M525f's 70,000). It's geared to small and micro offices, while the M525f is targeted more to SMB and workgroups. The MB471 may have fewer frills, but it's a solid and cost-effective performer. The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 MFP M525f is a respectable choice for larger offices looking for a full-featured monochrome MFP.

Freeware - Microsoft Office Starter

First off, I had issues installing this stating that the files were not found to install and the error lead to the fact that it needed an OEM preload in order to install this. I was first very unhappy thinking MS was just giving this to OEM owners (which in some respect prior was correct)but now, it's completely free.
After trying other installs, etc... I uninstalled Office 2007, this now installed so I'm not sure what the issue is there but regardless, it worked. All that aside, it may be scaled down, have ads but at least it gives people(especially college students who struggle to get word 2010)a chance to use it without restriction in that regard so I have to say, this is a good thing. Open Office is of course a great alternative, however, many colleges won't accept you using it in class or otherwise since they stick to standards. Again, that's why this is a GOOD thing. The setup is very quick and painless and so far, the ads are very non-intrusive and don't hinder any work whatsoever. I have to be honest and give this a 5 star. Don't forget, you also get Excel, Picture Manager and others with this so yeah, it's not extremely hindered. review details I think it was a good gesture from MS to offer this free, Love it! review details

Xbox Creator Speaks On Ouya - Game Informer

Ed Fries started his career working for Microsoft, where he worked up to become the head of Microsoft?s Game Division. Now Fries is acting as an advisor on the Kickstarter-funded Ouya project ? which aims to put a custom-based Android operating system into a console box. The system is set to release early next year, but we briefly chatted with Fries about his thoughts on the Ouya and how it compares to the release of the original Xbox.

You?re on the advisory board for Ouya. What drew you to that project?
A lot of times why people want me to be an adviser these days is just cause I am pretty connected in the gaming business, so I can help hook them up with different developers who might be interested or maybe hardware companies who might also be able to help, or I can just give advice from my experience in working in the console business. I try to do all of those things with Ouya. It?s fun to be part of a small team, small project, that was Kickstarted. It?s a great example of something that just couldn?t happen a few years ago. You couldn?t build competitive hardware just like that using off the shelf parts; you couldn?t fund it through crowd-source funding. The big cool developers wouldn?t have been interested in that. All these pieces had to fall into place to make Ouya possible. So, to me it was more like an opportunistic thing, these guys saw, ?Ah, all these little pieces that we need to do this are all lying out there, what if we just do it?? It?s not even risky really, it?s like, ?We?ll put it up on Kickstarter and people will like it or they won?t, if they like it then we?ll make it.? It?s almost sort of a free-to-play attitude up around a console launch, put your game out there and see what happens early on, as opposed to building it in secret for years.?

When you guys started working on the original Xbox, the concept was to put Microsoft Windows and Direct X in a stand along box. Now, Ouya is looking to put Android into a console box. Do you see that as a kind of spiritual successor in a way?
I hadn?t thought of it that way. I think the thing about Ouya that?s interesting to me, there?s sort of this obvious need that?s not being met. There?s sort of this need for this open console that?s digitally distributed, and it?s just not there. Apple isn?t doing it, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo aren?t really doing it. And so, Ouya is just kind of stepping into this opportunity for various historical reasons that no one else wants to go into. So I don?t know, Xbox was a little different than that I think.

Ouya had a Kickstarter goal of less than a million, but it ended up raising over eight; did the response to the Ouya concept surprise you guys at all?
I asked the CEO that, Julie Ehrman, the other day and she said absolutely, it absolutely surprised her. I guess I didn?t think about it enough at the time to have an opinion about whether it would work or not. It was kind of like, ?Let?s just try it and see,? but it has been exciting to watch it grow and be part of it.

Do you feel that the process of launching a new console in the market has changed quite a bit in the last 10 years?
I think it?s going to have an impact on the way consoles and developers interact in the future. It?s getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience. Anybody can develop for the platform, certification is a relatively cheap and painless thing, and in the old days of consoles there are all sorts of myths and legends that say that?s a bad thing to do. That?s why the game business melted down in ?84, there was too much junk on the market, but now you?ve got guys who make games like Fez who can?t do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn?t be a problem, but because it?s on XBLA it?s a problem. Those kinds of ideas have to go away in the next generation. They?ll go away in Ouya, they?ll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, they have to respond to that, it?s just the future. Likewise they have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that. It can?t just be $50 product in a box all the time.

Do you see Ouya as a direct competitor to Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony, or is it kind of like it?s own thing?
No I don?t think they see themselves that way, I think they see a market niche opportunity, they don?t know how big it?s going to be, but it?s already big enough just through Kickstarter to make it happen. We?ll just see how it goes.?

Creating Success from the Inside Out - Chuck It Down

If you were a fly on the wall of my studio of late, you would find a half-crazed woman with glue on her hands, half-buried alive in boxes full of beads with a trail behind her of camera set-ups and half-made jewelry pieces.? Not to mention the pile of items by the computer yet to be described and added to Etsy.? Perhaps you can identify.? Indeed, it is the holiday season in the land of Etsy shop owners everywhere.

That?s why it?s serendipitous that the next principle in Jack Canfield?s self-improvement book, Success Principles, is Chunk It Down.? As busy Etsy shop owners in the midst of holiday madness, knowing how to take our goals and break them down into manageable tasks could prove helpful.? At the very least, re-reading this chapter may very well have saved my sanity.

In this chapter, Canfield discusses making overwhelming goals more attainable by breaking them down into a series of tasks from beginning to end.? He suggests a?couple of?different ways to do this.? One way is to work backwards from successful completion and identify each step along the way.? Another way is to create a mind map.? A mind map is pretty much a to-do list that is set up in a visual way.? Start off by writing your goal in the center of a big piece of paper and circling it.? You can also do this on post-it notes on your wall or on a magnetic board.? I prefer post-its because it?s dynamic (and because I?m completely addicted to them).? Divide your goal into major categories of tasks.? Underneath each of these subcategories you can write your spokes or task items.? You can break it down as far as you need to until you get to individual tasks or steps.? I took my insane and unfocused attempt at my goal and turned it into a mind map that has structure to it (see below).? My major goal is to make a certain amount in sales by the end of the year.? That is written on the orange post-it note in the center of the map below.? Next, I identified my sub-categories (in pink).? In this case, I wrote the vehicles for my profits:? repeat customers, local shop sales, Etsy sales, and craft fair sales.? Lastly, I broke down into steps the things I need to do in order to generate more sales within each of these subcategories.? These tasks are written on small blue post-it notes.? I may break this down even further.

Once you have your mind map, you can use it to create daily to-do lists.? Ideally, you would create your next day?s to-do list the night before so that you are ready to go in the morning.

How do you chunk it down?? I?m interested in how you all organize your busy lives so that you can be efficient and focused when you do have time to devote to your business and your shop.? How are your holiday preparations going?? Please share!

(AP) ? They may be a big hit at kids' birthday parties, but inflatable bounce houses can be dangerous, with the number of injuries soaring in recent years, a nationwide study found.

Kids often crowd into bounce houses, and jumping up and down can send other children flying into the air, too.

The numbers suggest 30 U.S. children a day are treated in emergency rooms for broken bones, sprains, cuts and concussions from bounce house accidents. Most involve children falling inside or out of the inflated playthings, and many children get hurt when they collide with other bouncing kids.

The number of children aged 17 and younger who got emergency-room treatment for bounce house injuries has climbed along with the popularity of bounce houses ? from fewer than 1,000 in 1995 to nearly 11,000 in 2010. That's a 15-fold increase, and a doubling just since 2008.

"I was surprised by the number, especially by the rapid increase in the number of injuries," said lead author Dr. Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Amusement parks and fairs have bounce houses, and the playthings can also be rented or purchased for home use.

Smith and colleagues analyzed national surveillance data on ER treatment for nonfatal injuries linked with bounce houses, maintained by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Their study was published online Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Only about 3 percent of children were hospitalized, mostly for broken bones.

More than one-third of the injuries were in children aged 5 and younger. The safety commission recommends against letting children younger than 6 use full-size trampolines, and Smith said barring kids that young from even smaller, home-use bounce houses would make sense.

"There is no evidence that the size or location of an inflatable bouncer affects the injury risk," he said.

Other recommendations, often listed in manufacturers' instruction pamphlets, include not overloading bounce houses with too many kids and not allowing young children to bounce with much older, heavier kids or adults, said Laura Woodburn, a spokeswoman for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials.

The study didn't include deaths, but some accidents are fatal. Separate data from the product safety commission show four bounce house deaths from 2003 to 2007, all involving children striking their heads on a hard surface.

Several nonfatal accidents occurred last year when bounce houses collapsed or were lifted by high winds.

A group that issues voluntary industry standards says bounce houses should be supervised by trained operators and recommends that bouncers be prohibited from doing flips and purposefully colliding with others, the study authors noted.

Bounce house injuries are similar to those linked with trampolines, and the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended against using trampolines at home. Policymakers should consider whether bounce houses warrant similar precautions, the authors said.

Fetal alcohol exposure affects brain structure in children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Children exposed to alcohol during fetal development exhibit changes in brain structure and metabolism that are visible using various imaging techniques, according to a new study being presented November 25 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Alcohol use by expectant mothers can lead to problems with the mental and physical development of their children -- a condition known as fetal alcohol syndrome. Research suggests an incidence of 0.2 to 1.5 per 1,000 live births, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Costs for care of individuals affected by fetal alcohol syndrome in the U.S. have been estimated at $4 billion annually.

Advancements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are affording unprecedented insights into the effects of alcohol on the central nervous systems of children whose mothers drank alcohol during their pregnancy. Recently, researchers in Poland used three different MRI techniques to better define these effects.

The study group included 200 children who were exposed to alcohol during their fetal stage and 30 children whose mothers did not drink while pregnant or during lactation. Researchers used MRI to evaluate the size and shape of the corpus callosum, the bundle of nerve fibers that forms the major communication link between the right and left halves of the brain, in the two groups. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the major cause of impaired development or complete absence of the corpus callosum.

The MRI results showed statistically significant thinning of the corpus callosum in the children exposed to alcohol compared with the other group.

"These changes are strongly associated with psychological problems in children," said Andrzej Urbanik, M.D., chair of the Department of Radiology at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

Dr. Urbanik and colleagues also used diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) to study six areas of the central nervous system in the children. DWI maps the diffusion process of water and can be a more sensitive means than traditional MRI for detecting tissue abnormalities.

Children in the alcohol group exhibited statistically significant increases in diffusion on DWI compared with the other children.

"The increase of diffusion indicates neurological disorders or damage to the brain tissue," Dr. Urbanik said.

To noninvasively study metabolism in the brains of the children, the researchers used proton (hydrogen) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HMRS), a common adjunct to structural MRI studies. HMRS results showed a complex collection of metabolic changes.

"In individual cases, we found a high degree of metabolic changes that were specific for particular locations within the brain," Dr. Urbanik said.

Benefits of a Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit Revealed in New Book ...

BARTOW, Ga. (PRWEB) November 17, 2012

From the author of My Spiritual Checkup, the practical guidebook leading readers to The Great Physician who examines their integral well being, A Spiritually Fit You is Catherine Braswells newly published book revealing the benefits of spiritual fitness and how to attain them. Braswells work takes off from the spiritual prognosis of her first book and brings it to fruition in this sequel.

This new book reinforces the belief that spiritual illnesses and issues can sometimes hinder spiritual progress. Like physical illnesses, these may cause many breakdowns that make the body unable to perform at its maximum level. She then contrasts this with the benefits of spiritual fitness and how they drive the bodys performance to the maximum level in all areas.

Braswell knows that for people to desire such benefits, she needs to help them visualize. Hence, she leads readers to picture positive changes when their minds are 100 percent pure, their hearts are free of clots and clutter, their mouths and tongues are in control, their eyes are at 20/20 visual acuity, and the rest of their spiritual health is where the Lord needs them to be operating. In short, she offers them a goal worth attaining.

She also structures each chapter in a way that is welcoming, enlightening and uplifting. She opens with practical questions, reflections, and information that readers can easily relate to. She follows up with an elucidation of supporting scriptural passages. She then closes with a brief and appropriate prayer that sums up her teaching.

A Spiritually Fit You ultimately teaches that integral fitness is a must for the church to be ready for the Great Return of the Lord. It prepares readers for a 21st Century spiritual renaissance.

Braswell is also in the process of releasing another practical spiritual book, titled Is the Church Sick?, which raises peoples awareness on spiritual health from personal level to the community level.

Hobby Lobby and Religious Liberty Under ObamaCare | Somewhat ...

[First published at Real Clear Politics.]

Hobby Lobby, the mega craft store, has lost the first round of their case against the government over the contraception mandate, and will be?fined?$1.3 million per day starting January 1st if they do not pay for contraception, sterilization, and abortifacients through employee provided insurance.

As a ?secular? corporation, they have no rights to use the religious beliefs of their ownership as a justification not to abide by the contraception mandate. This decision is?inconsistent?with the Tyndale House one you may have heard about. So apparently being a Bible publisher does make you religious, but being a Bible seller doesn?t.

The argument the administration advanced successfully in the Hobby Lobby case is a particularlytroublesome?one for believers of all faiths who operate under the assumption that they can use their moral principles to guide the way their place of business spends money. According to the administration?s legal arguments, the family that owns Hobby Lobby is not protected by the First Amendment?s ?free exercise? clause because ?Hobby Lobby is a for-profit, secular employer, and a secular entity by definition does not exercise religion.?

If Hobby Lobby ultimately loses this case, it?s not hard to see which decision they?ll make given the choice between a $1.3 million per day fine and a $2 million per month fine. The latter, of course, is the amount they estimate they?ll pay for simply dropping insurance altogether and shifting all employees onto Medicaid and the subsidized exchange coverage.

Think it?ll be a hard decision? Maybe understanding who these people are would give you some clarity.

The Hobby Lobby folks are a straight-up American success story. A family business, started in Oklahoma in 1970 with a $600 bank loan, they started by making their frames from wood bought from local sellers, building them in their garage. The kids glued them together on the kitchen table in exchange for baseball cards. The family opened their first frame retail shop in Oklahoma City in 1972. They had four employees. Now they have 514 stores in 41 states. They employ 13,240 people full time. In 1981 they added another store to the family, Mardel, a Christian/church supply shop which sells Bibles and study books, curriculum, Christian craft supplies. That?s another 35 stores, in 7 states, with 372 employees. So they went from a garage business started with $600 to two businesses that employ more than 13,600 people full time across basically the entire country.

The company remained all privately owned, with no franchising. Their statement of purposes and various commitments all begin with Bible verses, commitments to honor the Lord. The Hobby Lobby folks pay well above minimum wage and have increased salaries four years in a row despite the recession. They are teetotalers of the old Oral Roberts variety, refusing to stock shot glasses, don?t sell any of their store locations with liquor stores, don?t allow backhauling of beer shipments ? all things that could make them money, but they just bear the costs. Every Christmas and Easter, the Hobby Lobby folks advertise a free Bible and spiritual counseling. They are closed every Sunday. The family also signed the giving pledge, committing to donate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.

So: I doubt this is the type of company to spend one dime on this contraception mandate. They will just drop coverage, and pay employees the difference, shifting them onto the exchanges or the taxpayer, rather than compromise their beliefs. It?s logical, it?s more predictable as a budgeting choice, and it will save them tens of millions in the long run versus retaining coverage and paying the fine.

The case isn?t over, of course ? there will be an appeal, and I wouldn?t be surprised to see this end up at the Supreme Court. There?s also a?bipartisan?effort to expand the religious exemption, though that?s more targeted at individuals than companies. It may be that the next major court decision regarding Obamacare will deal with how religious freedom rights apply to corporations ? a Hobby Lobby case which follows with, or breaks from, the lessons of Citizens United could have enormous ramifications for religious business owners across the country. Americans will find out soon whether freedom of association matters or doesn?t under the Obama health insurance regime.

NASA rover tracks big dust storm on Mars

A NASA spacecraft is keeping tabs on a vast dust storm on Mars that has spawned changes in the Martian atmosphere felt by two rovers on the planet's surface.

The Martian dust storm was first spotted by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) on Nov. 10 and has been tracked ever since. The agency's Mars rover Opportunity has seen a slight drop in atmospheric clarity due to the storm. Meanwhile the newer Curiosity rover ? which has a built-in weather station ? has seen a drop in air pressure and slightly increased nighttime temperatures halfway around the planet from Opportunity, NASA officials said.

"This is now a regional dust storm," Rich Zurek, NASA's chief Mars scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., said in a statement Wednesday. "It has covered a fairly extensive region with its dust haze and it is in a part of the planet were some regional storms have grown into global dust hazes."

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Mars rover snaps spooky self-portraits

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: It looks as if someone is taking portraits of NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars from a few feet away ? but who's the photographer?

    2. Countdown to a total solar eclipse
    3. Light from first stars in universe spotted
    4. Spacewalkers troubleshoot leaky radiator

NASA is combining observations by the Curiosity rover and MRO to create a complete picture of the Martian dust storm. The Spain-built Rover Environmental Monitoring Station on Curiosity gives scientists a real-time look at conditions over the rover's position inside Gale Crater.

The Mars Color Imager on MRO was built by Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego. It was Malin's Bruce Cantor who first spotted the storm in photos from the powerful Mars camera on Nov. 10. [ Amazing Mars Photos by MRO Spacecraft ]

"For the first time since the Viking missions of the 1970s, we are studying a regional dust storm both from orbit and with a weather station on the surface," Zurek said.

Because the dust from the current storm is absorbing sunlight instead of reflecting it, a warming effect 16 miles above the Martian tempest has been seen by MRO. The effect, first recorded by MRO's Mars Climate Sounder on Nov. 16, has led to a temperature increase of 45 degrees Fahrenheit so far.

Warmer temperatures are not confined to the Martian south. The circulation of the Martian atmosphere has also led to a hot spot in the planet's northern polar regions. The temperature on Mars is typically about minus 80 degrees F (minus 60 degrees C), but can vary depending on location and the Martian season.

Regional dust storms on Mars were observed in 2001 and 2007, but not between those years or in the time since. The Martian year lasts two Earth years, with major dust storm events following a seasonal pattern. Dust storm season on Mars began a few weeks ago as the Martian spring began in the planet's southern hemisphere, NASA officials said.

"One thing we want to learn is why do some Martian dust storm get to this size and stop growing, while others this size keep growing and go global," Zurek said.

A global dust storm on Mars could have implications for the Opportunity and Curiosity rovers. If the current dust storm were to expand to cover the Red Planet, the dust settling on Opportunity's solar panels could reduce the rover's power supply. Opportunity has been exploring the plains of Meridiani Planum since its 2004 landing on Mars.

NASA's newer Mars rover Curiosity, meanwhile, would likely see increased haze in its photos of nearby terrain, as well as an above normal air temperature. The 1-ton Curiosity rover landed on Mars on Aug. 5 and is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator that is unaffected by dust storms.?

It?s the Lifetime Movies That Got Small

Grant Bowler and Lindsay Lohan in Liz & Dick. Grant Bowler and Lindsay Lohan in Liz & Dick.

Photo by Jack Zeman ? 2011/Lifetime.

Surprise, surprise: Liz and Dick, Sunday's heavily hyped Lifetime movie starring jewel-hungry, scandal-prone former child star Lindsay Lohan as jewel-hungry, scandal-prone former child star Elizabeth Taylor, is not that good. The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman balked at what he suggests is incredulously contrived dialogue, such as when Grant Bowler's Dick coos to a distraught Liz, ?I will love you even if you get as fat as a hippo.? ?Seriously,? snarks Goodman, ?He says that.?

Yeah, well, seriously?the real Richard Burton said a lot of things, aloud and in his daily letters to Taylor, that were much nuttier, much more grandiose than that. If Liz and Dick is neither as fun nor as poignant as a dramatization of perhaps the greatest destined-but-doomed romance of the 20th century could or should be, the problem is not the not-quite-human performances or the sometimes over-the-top dialogue. If anything, Liz and Dick is too tasteful, too restrained; if anything, Lohan and Bowler do too good a job of approximating real people.

The real Burton and Taylor weren't ?real? people?they lived like something between gods and space aliens, as though the rules that governed mere mortals simply did not apply to them. Taylor survived countless brushes with death and overcame debilitating addictions to booze and pills; Burton attempted to comply with repeated doctors? orders to quit drinking but could never stay dry for very long. Liz and Dick shows the couple drinking but rarely drunk, and both Burton's health problems and Taylor's Betty Ford Clinic stint are elided completely.

Liz and Dick depicts Burton and Taylor moving their blended family onto a yacht in the Mediterranean so they could avoid both the intrusion of the paparazzi and the burden of paying taxes, but it leaves out the fact that this retreat also allowed them to sit out the late 1960s blissfully unaware that the power balance, in Hollywood and in the larger American culture, had changed. They were so isolated that they had no idea how far removed from reality they had become. The couple returned to Los Angeles in 1970 for the Oscars (Burton was nominated for best actor for the stodgy Anne of a Thousand Days) to find that their type of larger-than-life stardom had become pass?; minutes after Burton lost his prize, a stunned Elizabeth presented the best picture statue to the X-rated Midnight Cowboy. ?The world has changed,? Burton wrote in his diary. ?I'm afraid that we are temporarily out in the cold, and fallen stars.?

Even the way they spoke to each other and about each other was patently, totally nuts. Liz and Dick is bookended with mentions of the letters Burton wrote to Taylor, every day for two decades, whether they were apart or not. It never quotes from these missives, perhaps because they were just too weird and often too smutty; more than one describes, as Burton put it in a note dated April 18, 1972, ?what it feels like to fuck you.?

If handwritten testament was one backbone of the Burton/Taylor relationship, jewelry was another. Liz and Dick documents the couple's historic first trip to Bulgari in Rome and occasionally returns to the subject of jewelry as an example of the couple's excessive spending and Liz's shallow extravagance. Which is to say that Liz and Dick totally misses the point of Burton and Taylor's shared jewel fetish. For her, near royalty, jewels were shining armor, tools for deflecting the gaze of onlookers from her face. For him, the Welsh son of a coal miner, there was an unmatchable thrill in being able to nestle priceless stones?symbols of his own earned wealth and status?on the hands and neck of the most beautiful woman in the world.

A great example of where the film doesn't dare go as far as reality is the way the movie depicts the end of Taylor's marriage to Eddie Fisher. In real life, as in the film, Burton really did demand that Taylor pick between him and Fisher, and she chose Burton?right in front of Fisher. In Liz and Dick, this scene marks the end of Taylor's marriage to Fisher. In real life, though, the cuckolded Fisher hung on for quite a while longer. According to Furious Love, Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger's incredible book on Burton and Taylor based on their diaries and letters, Fisher called Taylor's villa days after the confrontation and Burton answered. ?What are you doing in my house?? Fisher asked. ?What do you think I'm doing?? Burton responded. ?I'm fucking your wife.?

Of course, the actual Burton/Taylor relationship is not the only ?real life? set of events that Liz and Dick references. The stunt casting of Lohan reflects a certain kind of brilliance on the part of the folks at Lifetime, who know there's enough interest in the troubled actress' "comeback" (her last screen credit was a small part in Robert Rodriguez's 2010 Machete) to fuel, if not ratings gold, then definitely Twitter trending topic gold. At one point, Lohan's Taylor gets on the phone and demands to be cast opposite Burton in The V.I.P.s: ?You pay me and fire all your PR people. You'll save money and have a huge hit!? It's a rare moment of self-awareness (though a made-up one, as producer Anatole de Grunwald actually offered Taylor a salary twice Burton?s); the movie would have benefited from more directly and more frequently plumbing the camp potential of the casting.

But Liz and Dick is a Lifetime movie, and Lifetime movies rarely allow for such intentional archness. One of the keys to the network?s highly successful formula?along with comically oppressive scores and happy endings for every harried single mom?is a complete lack of subtext or irony. It's extremely rare that anyone in a Lifetime movie ever says anything other than what they mean (unless they're blatantly lying as part of a plot device), and they certainly don't have thoughts or feelings that they don't articulate out loud. There's no room for complicated or ambiguous feelings, double meanings, or psychological implication. Even when the movies plumb real-life incidents for material, they inevitably flatten out messy pragmatics or moral shades to fit the template: Recall the Jennifer Love Hewitt vehicle The Client List, which turned an actual small-town prostitution scandal into fodder for the saucy adventures of a fictional, super-hot, struggling housewife.

I know what Lifetime movies are like because I genuinely enjoy watching them?particularly at this time of year, when the Christmas settings (never Hanukkah) add an extra layer of fairy dust to the proceedings. So I'm not surprised that there's no room in Liz and Dick for the truly wild aspects of Liz and Dick's real lives. The couple retains fascination 50 years after their initial coupling because they managed to be so many things at once: paparazzi-magnet stars and serious actors; epically gluttonous homewreckers who were devoted to their children and, in Taylor's case, charity; the ultimate symbols of old-fashioned glamour who defied Hollywood's rules and all arbiters of propriety (including the pope!) by living exactly as they wished, controversy be damned. Liz and Dick may be getting more attention than the average Lifetime movie (I don't remember seeing billboards for the Rob Lowe-starring Drew Peterson: Untouchable), but it's still a Lifetime movie, and the magic of the Lifetime movie lies in the way even the thorniest and most controversial issues and conundra are smoothed out into absolute equations for easy resolution. The real Liz and Dick forced their totally inappropriate, taboo and taste-defying behavior into public conversation. If you?re a Lifetime movie viewer, you?re never asked to confront the unfamiliar or challenge your own way of thinking?or even, like, think at all.

End User Computing Is Empowering the Non-Programmer

?

End user computing is empowering the non-programmer to make complete use of the cloud based services that are available today at our disposal. By integrating the end user into the advanced computing environment, it aims to provide a more holistic approach to problem-solving while using high-end computing at a back-end level. The technical proficiency of the end user is not that important and the overall aptitude towards the work is demanded.

?

?

When we talk about an ?end user? what we mean is a person who uses the complex software or the network service by logging into it by a specified user name or user ID and is most often not a programmer or someone highly tech-savvy. The ?end user? is the target user or buyer of the complex service or application which is developed by a programmer. A successful end user computing model must comprise of a highly efficient service desk and client-support system apart from asset management services, messaging and collaboration services and infrastructure applications. Most IT giants are now offering these over the cloud via cloud based services.

?

?

Most end user computing interfaces are built using fourth or fifth generation computer programming languages like MAPPER, SQL and ICAD. The key is to make the interface easy-to-use for a non-programmer and enable them to conduct or carry out anything ranging from something as easy as clicking some buttons or modifying data using a controlled scripting language.

?

?

Cloud based services are making good use of the concept of ?end user computing?. With customers becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of functioning over the cloud, the end user is being given more control over the IT infrastructure. In cloud computing, basically hardware and software computing resources are delivered to the end user as a chargeable service over a trusted network. It delivers the platform, infrastructure and the applications to the user in a bundle which is represented in the logical diagram in the shape of a cloud and hence the term ?cloud computing?. The major players (but certainly not the only players) on today?s date in this arena are Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft. Each of them is coming up with a host of applications and services via ?the cloud?.

?

?

Why are so many small and medium scale businesses taking to these cloud based services? The most obvious reason is the reduction in cost. The ?cloud? vendors are giving them the liberty to pay-per-use for software, hardware, platforms and storage space. They are enabling them to get the super high end technical knowhow, which earlier was only available to large businesses, at a much lower cost. The disadvantage of migrating businesses into ?the cloud? is the high-risk factor. If due to some risk unexpected reason, the services become unavailable for a long time, it could lead to major problems for many businesses. Also, the privacy of data is a concern for many since all the data is sent to ?the cloud?. But these services, without any doubt, are boosting end user computing as the target for all the computing resources is ultimately the end user.

?

End user computing is trying to achieve integration of the end user into the complex computing system. Cloud based services are being provided by most of the IT giants nowadays.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO, or ?search engine optimization?, means setting up your website so that it is as high as possible in the search engine rankings. There are many paid services just for increasing SEO. You may have been told by people that effective SEO is complicated and should be left to the professionals. Pay no attention to that.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. You will want to find out what risks are involved in order to make the best decisions for your site.

Configure your server such that it differentiates capital and lowercase letters in URLs. Not checking this can end up in less traffic to your site.

Focus on mastering one SEO strategy at a time. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You should focus on the things you post on your site.

If you are looking to increase your site?s visibility, you need to make sure that you sign up for free local listing through Google and Yahoo. These services get your site noticed, which means more people will visit your site. Do not turn down free publicity.

Do not create pages full of links. Instead, incorporate the links into your page content, so there is a blending of both links and pertinent material for your readers. Link pages are boring to your readers and are not ranked highly by the search engines. You will appear to know what you are doing if all of your information is relevant.

When you optimize a web page using keywords, you should focus on a single phrase that will attract traffic. Stuffing a page with more than one keyword tends to lead to confusion. The better your content, the more interested your readers will be. Search engine optimization is important but a establishing a core group of readers will benefit your business in great ways.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. It will be easier to draw new readers into your site. Place a keyword in the title, in the summary, and include it in the body about four to five times.

If you upgrade your website often, you will get more attention from search engine spiders. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People like hearing from the big guy himself.

Social media sites can serve as great marketing tools to promote your business. YouTube is great for videos, while Facebook and Twitter allow direct interaction.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Though SEO does have layers of complexity that are best reserved for professionals, there is no reason to believe that beginners cannot also use this tool to their advantage. Instead of wasting time and money hiring someone else, learn a few simple tips to get your website to the top of the search engines? listings. It may be even easier than you imagined!
