Braves acquire Maholm, Johnson from Cubs

ATLANTA (AP) ? The Atlanta Braves have boosted their rotation and added a right-handed bat to their bench by acquiring left-hander Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson from the Chicago Cubs.

Braves general manager Frank Wren confirmed late Monday night the team is sending right-handed pitchers Arodys Vizcaino, a top prospect who had season-ending Tommy John surgery in April, and Jaye Chapman to the Cubs.

The 29-year-old Maholm is 9-6 with a 3.74 ERA, including a 4-0 record and 1.23 ERA in July. He is 62-79 in eight seasons, including seven with Pittsburgh.

Johnson is hitting .333 against left-handers this season. He is 13 for 29 (.448) as a pinch hitter.

The Braves have won six straight and trail first-place Washington by 3 1-2 games in the NL East.

China eyes diving sweep, US future looking up

LONDON (AP) ? The Chinese have their sights on an unprecedented diving sweep.

Sounds familiar.

The Americans are feeling confident about their chances of winning a few more medals.

Now that's something new.

With the icy precision everyone has come to expect from the world's diving powerhouse, Wu Minxia and partner He Zi captured their sport's first gold medal of London Olympics with a commanding performance in the women's 3-meter synchronized event on Sunday.

Everyone else was playing for silver, which may become a theme at the Olympic Aquatics Centre. China nearly swept the diving medals four years ago, winning seven events before Australia's Matthew Mitcham pulled off a huge upset from the 10-meter platform.

"It feels normal," Wu said in Mandarin. "I really don't have that many emotions."

While this may have been a ho-hum result for the Chinese, the U.S. team was downright giddy. It had been 12 long years since the once-powerful Americans even claimed a medal, but Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnston broke the drought by taking silver.

"Our curse is out of the way," said Bryant, who finished fourth in springboard synchro with a different partner in Beijing.

Now, they're looking to add to the total. While the Chinese will be favored again in men's 10-meter platform, the Americans are hopeful about their prospects with David Boudia and Nick McCrory. Plus, the British should be in the mix with the home crowd cheering on Tom Daley and his synchro partner, Pete Waterfield.

"You could dive your backside off and come in sixth," said Steve Foley, the high-performance director for USA Diving. "That's a great field. But certainly David and Nick are right in contention to win medals. And now, they don't have to say, 'Oh, I have to worry about getting a medal to get the monkey off our backs.' It takes a bit of stress off those to follow."

Since Foley took over three years ago, the Americans have taken a different approach. They no longer focus on what they did in the past, such as winning every Olympic diving medal from 1928-52, or extending their domination into the 1980s behind Greg Louganis.

As Foley likes to point out, the U.S. hasn't had much to cheer about for years. The Americans managed just two bronze medals at Atlanta in 1996. Four years later, Laura Wilkinson won a surprising gold on the platform, that was their only medal of those games. The team was totally shut out at the last two Olympics.

"We've got to forget the great USA Diving history because, really, that was 20-plus years ago," Foley said. "The glory days were gone a long time ago. I think we just needed to be realistic. Let's build the class of 2012 and make a new beginning."

That new beginning is off to a good start.

After receiving their medals ? Bryant cried and Johnston smiled broadly on the podium ? Bryant reminded Johnston to hold up her prize as they posed for a gaggle of photographers on the deck.

"Ahhhh!!! So happy for our girls!!" tweeted Boudia, who also will compete in 10-meter individual. "Great start."

Wilkinson chimed in, too.

"So proud of you girls!" she tweeted.

The Chinese tandem led throughout the five-dive round and totaled 346.20 points, giving Wu her fifth Olympic medal. She is just one shy of countrywoman Guo Jingjing's record of six medals.

Guo was China's superstar diver until her retirement 1? years ago. Wu has three golds, one silver and one bronze. She could earn another in the individual springboard event, where she has medaled twice before and will compete against He.

China is coming off a sweep of the golds at last year's world championships in Shanghai, but no country has taken all eight golds since synchro doubled the number of Olympic diving events in 2000.

"I am impressed by them. That's one of my training methods, just watching them and how they do it," Johnston said. "If they mess up, then you have an opportunity."

Johnston and Bryant finished second with 321.90 points, giving the Americans their first-ever medal in synchro. Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel earned the bronze with 316.80 for Canada's first medal of the games.

The U.S. duo was third after the first round, then moved up to second and stayed there despite a mere 1.5-point lead over Canada after the fourth round. Bryant deliberately didn't watch the scoreboard during the competition.

"I have all the faith in the world when I get up on that board Kelci is going to hit her dive and I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm going to hit mine," Johnston said.

Heymans claimed her fourth career Olympic medal, making her the first female diver to earn a medal at four consecutive games. She took silver on individual 10-meter in Beijing, bronze in synchro platform in 2004 and silver in the same event in Sydney.

"It's really great and I hope it's going to inspire the other athletes to do well," Heymans said.

Foley had emphasized synchro success since coming on board after Beijing. He looks for consistency and divers who can match each other's quality of dives. Each of the three synchro teams ? the U.S. didn't qualify a team in women's 10-meter synchro ? has one veteran Olympian and one rookie. Four years ago, 10 of the team's 12 divers had never been to the Olympics.

Unlike the individual events, synchro diving goes directly to the final at the Olympics, with no preliminaries or semifinals.

"If you have the performance of your life you're going to be happy," Johnston said. "We had the performance of our lives and I'm ecstatic."

Improve Your FICO Score With Student Loan Consolidation ...

Consolidating student loans is one of the most effective ways to improve your FICO score dramatically. A FICO score is perhaps the most important factor in shaping your financial future. Just a few additional points on a FICO score can literally save tens of thousands of dollars over a lifetime by locking in low interest rates on houses, cars, and other items purchased with credit.

How FICO scores are determined

A FICO score is derived from a complex algorithm that weighs different aspects of your past and present financial situation in order to predict how good of a credit risk you are likely to be in the future. Each factor is weighted differently depending on importance with 35% of the score based on payment history, 30% based on the amount of debt owed, length of history contributing 10%, new credit 10%, and types of credit 10%.

How student loan consolidation directly improves your FICO score

Because the second heaviest weighted factor (30%) is based on the amount of debt owed, reducing this amount can make a drastic impact on your credit score. Lenders also look at debt to income ratio when determining the amount of credit they will make available. Particularly for those who are just starting their careers, the lower monthly payments that result from consolidating a student loan can make a highly favorable impact on debt to income ratio.

Borrowers who refinance their student loan often save well over 50% on monthly payments. For example, the payment on a $30,000 student loan before refinancing is approximately $350. After consolidating, the average payment is around $166, a savings of more than $2,200 per year.

Indirectly improving your FICO score with student loan refinancing

Young adults who are just leaving school and starting their lives, families, and careers already have the chips stacked against them when it comes to finances. The majority of people rely on credit cards to help leverage cash flow in the years following college. But credit cards, especially for those who can?t pay off the balance immediately, can become a source of angst and take a toll on your FICO score.

By choosing to redirect the money saved from student loan consolidation, borrowers can pay down high interest credit debts. Using the above example, redirecting $2,200 per year toward paying off high interest credit card debt can add up significantly. The total over 5 years can result in $11,000 worth of high interest debt repayment.

How student loan refinancing works

Student loan refinancing works by first locking in a low fixed interest rate as opposed to the variable interest rate customary of most government loans. Once a specific repayment amount is determined, the loan is then spread out over a longer period of time, resulting in a lower monthly payment. There are no penalties for early repayment of a consolidated student loan, so borrowers can leverage the lower monthly payments to improve their FICO score and pay off high interest debts early on.

Benefits of improving your FICO score

The effects of a student loan consolidation on a FICO score should not be overlooked. Consolidating student loans is one of the simplest ways to make a huge improvement to your score. The ability to secure credit at low interest rates will most definitely have an impact on your financial future and the lifestyle you are able to lead. With a better FICO score you can have access to higher limits of credit, get loans faster, and reduce the amount of your hard-earned income being spent on interest payments.

  • Google and the European Union are nearing a settlement deal on an antitrust investigation into the search giant?s dominance in the internet market in areas of search, travel, and other industries. The E.U. said that Google may have abused such dominance in search and advertising by promoting its own businesses at the expense of its competitors. The settlement may require changes to the company?s business practices that could have an effect on users worldwide. The Federal Trade Commission and regulators in other nations are following the case closely.
  • There is no end in sight for the world?s largest environmental litigation debacle as dissent erupts among the plaintiffs who won an $18.2 billion verdict against Chevron in an Ecuadorian court.? After an 18-year legal battle, the plaintiffs, farmers and indigenous Amazonian Indians, won the biggest single pollution judgment ever for harm caused by oil exploration and production in eastern Ecuador. Chevron, however, has stated that it will not pay the judgment as the verdict was part of a fraudulent conspiracy involving attorneys, judges, and government officials in both the United States and Ecuador. ?Chevron maintains that any pollution remaining in the rainforest was caused by Petroecuador, Ecuador?s national oil company. In addition, one group of Amazonian Indians in the class of plaintiffs currently represented by New York practitioner, Steven Donziger, are filing a suit against Donziger, alleging that Donziger is not representing their group?s interests and requesting that he explain how his team plans to spend the billions of dollars from the judgment.
  • From the patent dispute between Apple Inc. and Korean manufacturer, Samsung Electronics Co., to automotive litigations involving Japanese and Korean corporations, to the increasing number of deals and disputes in emerging economies like Brazil and India, law firms are finding a need for attorneys with language skills and are hiring them in droves.? The attorneys are often brought on as temporary hires and offer the firms more bang for the buck with both legal and linguistic skills.? The mass hires typically happen when the firms are under deadline to review a large number of documents in a short timeframe.
  • ?There will be many commercial interests looking to gain at this summer?s London Summer Olympics.? Indeed, the endeavor involves significant sums, including a budget of $14.5 billion from the British government, $4.87 billion in broadcast fees and sponsorship raised by the IOC for the summer Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and another 700 million pounds raised by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.? The IOC has also entered large corporate sponsorship contracts with eleven global sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, McDonald?s, and Panasonic, which for the period of 2009-12 has generated $957 million. Sponsors may pay in cash or kind, so some, like French consultant firm, Atos, are providing information technology services for the games. Although such companies believe that the Olympic sponsorship will have a positive effect, some are more cautious and believe that the Olympic boost will be less than expected.

They loaded mortars in the war, so now what?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. combat troops patrol dusty pathways in Afghanistan, look for hidden roadside bombs, load and fire mortar shells at insurgents' positions. So when they come home, how will that help them land a civilian job?

They can "be a mercenary," muses Capt. John Rodriguez, who'll leave the Army soon after six years.

That's the kind of thinking the government wants to change, both among American employers and members of the armed forces. In fact, the skills troops use in combat can be useful for many types of civilian jobs, but employers often don't understand them and people leaving the military need help with presenting those skills or developing new ones.

Rodriguez was attending a recent resume-writing class, part of the Transition Assistance Program, which is run by the departments of Defense, Labor and Veteran Affairs to help soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines successfully make the transition back to the civilian world.

Some 250,000 service members leave the military each year and all must attend counseling on finances and other issues whether they served six years or 26 years, whether they saw the battlefield or not. Other parts of the 20-year-old transition program have been voluntary, such as the resume-writing class and one on how to dress for the civilian workplace.

At the class Rodriguez attended, teacher Aleshia Thomas-Miller offered some tips for writing resumes that might help civilian employers understand what veterans did in Afghanistan and Iraq and how their experience translates to a nonmilitary job:

?Don't use military jargon or an alphabet soup of military acronyms. Even a job isn't called a job in the military; it's called an MOS, or military occupational specialty. That might fly in military circles, but in the civilian world, it's incomprehensible.

"It doesn't matter how qualified you are if the employer does not understand," she told the class of a dozen soldiers.

?If you were a platoon leader, as Rodriguez was in Afghanistan, don't use that term either, Thomas-Miller said. Say you managed 50 people, were responsible for expensive equipment, made decisions in stressful situations.

There's online help as well. At careeronestop.org and Mil2FedJobs.com, troops can type in their military occupation and get a list of related jobs, the states in which they're located and sometimes with a link to apply for the job online, depending on the program.

For instance, an 11C (an indirect fire infantryman who can supervise or serve on a mortar unit), might find one of 180 jobs in Illinois, driving trucks, running company training programs or working in security.

The vast majority of veterans are employed, but the jobless rate for the nation's new generation of veterans was 9.5 percent last month. That's down from 12.7 percent the previous month and 13.3 percent in June 2011, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But it's still been consistently higher than the country at large, with an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent in June, and for vets from all previous wars.

There are hundreds of jobs in the military ? for medics, computer specialists, mechanics, lawyers, finance officers, pilots, electrical engineers, nuclear engineers, food service managers, heavy equipment operators, and more. Though officials provided no data on who has the hardest time finding jobs after military service, many say it's infantrymen and those who held other jobs directly involved in combat that have no direct civilian equivalent.

President Barack Obama on Monday announced a redesign of the transition program. Starting later this year, assistance will begin earlier in a military career, rather than at the end. There will be more one-on-one help, a separate focus for those wanting to go back to school or start their own businesses. Classes will be five to seven days, rather than the current three and more things will be mandatory for most people.

The redesigned program will have a fancier new name ? Transition GPS. The administration is calling it the first major overhaul of a system started in the 1990s post-Cold War drawdown, though it's been updated in recent years to be more youth friendly with web-based information and workshops.

Acknowledging that troops already have some terrific experience, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the revised program will help them "apply their experience to additional training, formal education, and develop successful civilian careers."

A recent study by the Center for New American Security, a Washington think tank, said businesses want to hire new vets because they believe they have leadership qualities, teamwork skills, character, discipline, expertise, effectiveness and loyalty.

Envisioning how vets might fit into their company is a different matter, said the study, which included interviews with 87 unidentified businessmen representing 69 companies.

"The most prominent obstacle to hiring veterans," it said, is that "both civilians and members of the military have a hard time translating military skills into civilian job qualifications."

Employers also said their concerns include:

?That troops with post-traumatic stress disorder may be "damaged" or have violent tendencies.

?That National Guard and Reserve troops will be called up for duty, leaving the company short-handed.

?That the majority of post-9/11 vets lack the college degrees or industry-specific expertise they'd need for senior positions, yet don't want lower level jobs employers feel are more appropriate for them.

?That vets too often seek jobs that they don't have the education or skills to do.

"There are folks who get it, are coming out of the service and say 'I realize I'm not going to be CEO,'" said Devin B. Holmes, CEO of Warriorgateway.org, a portal to help troops find help with employment, health questions, education and a range of other transition needs.

"There are also folks coming out and (saying) 'I want a GS14 position in the government,'" Holmes said, meaning the second-highest level in the "General Schedule" of government pay ? jobs that go to people with a lot of experience and/or a very high level of expertise in their field, and are management positions.

"You can achieve that if you work hard and do a good job ... but you're not going to get it on Day One," Holmes said.

Officials say privately that part of the disconnect comes from a sense of entitlement among some troops, the feeling that they deserve a great job after doing duty that only a tiny fraction of Americans were willing to do. But Holmes said the larger reason is that troops lack an understanding of what some jobs entail and what experience and education is needed to get them ? a problem he thinks the Transition Assistance Program should work on.

Cross Insurance Center realization of dream for family, patriarch ...

BANGOR, Maine ? For Woodrow Cross, seeing the words ?Cross Insurance Center? on the side of Bangor?s new arena and events center is the realization of a dream he never even dared to have.

Back in the 1950s, the Bangor native?s only involvement with a civic arena was as a part-time cement tester working for a company building the Bangor Auditorium, which opened in October 1955.

Cross had just started his one-man, Bangor-based insurance agency in 1954 and business wasn?t brisk enough for him to support his family, so he supplemented his income by working part-time jobs.

Now Cross, 95, still puts in six days a week at the agency bearing his name, but his agency has grown into a statewide and regional business employing about 450 people at 27 offices in three states.

Cross, his son Brent and grandson Jonathan were all on hand Tuesday morning at the city?s official announcement of the naming rights for the $65 million, 8,000-seat arena that will be hosting events as early as the fall of next year. The naming rights are the result of a 15-year, $3 million deal between Cross Insurance Agency and the city.

?It?s quite something to see that on this arena,? said Woodrow Cross, who also used to work part time at the mill for Eastern Fine paper in Brewer. ?And it?s nice to be a part of this project.?

He was referring to artists? renderings of the finished arena and its signage on display at Tuesday?s press conference.

Brent Cross, who grew up on Silver Road in Bangor, remembers delivering copies of the Bangor Daily News as a Sunriser for several years.

It?s that kind of local connection that excited the speakers at Tuesday?s naming ceremony, held inside an arena that is rapidly taking shape.

?I?m thrilled that it?s a truly local company investing in this,? said Bangor City Manager Cathy Conlow. ?I think from a personal perspective, this is really a momentous day for us. I?m moved that a family in Bangor would invest that kind of money into naming this facility.?

Bangor City Councilor Pat Blanchette referred to Cross as a multigenerational, homegrown family business from Bangor and said it was ?probably one of the most unique naming situations in the country.?

Bangor City Councilors Charlie Longo and James Gallant were also on hand for Tuesday?s ceremony.

?Brent Cross and [nephew] Woody Cross taught a risk management class at Husson, which Jamie and I both took,? said Longo. ?You would think that people who own a company big enough to have the Red Sox and Patriots as clients wouldn?t take the time to teach a class at Husson, but they do and that?s what?s so great about Cross.

?They?re big, but they?ve never lost that local sense of where we come from.?

Cianbro Corp. Chairman and CEO Peter Vigue, whose company is constructing the arena, thanked the Crosses for their investment, saying the project is much greater than a new arena, but also about ?advancing this city and this community.?

?You are endorsing this facility by putting your name on it,? Vigue said.

The Crosses were originally referred by Friends of the Maine Center, a grass-roots advocacy group for the new arena, as a possible founding sponsor of the arena. The Friends group made the referral to Front Row Marketing, a company contracted by the city of Bangor that specializes in generating ancillary income for sports and entertainment venues.

?Front Row approached us initially about a lower category of sponsorship, but then I said, ?Well, what about the naming rights??? said Brent Cross.

?They had five or six companies they?d been talking to for a couple months, but after we talked to them on July 5, we had them back in on Monday, July 9, and made them an offer.?

The arena isn?t finished and the name has yet to go on the exterior, but Cross said his company?s deal is already paying dividends.

?I think it?s exceeded our expectations already,? Brent Cross said. ?A couple of insurance journals picked up the story and spread it nationwide, so we?ve already gotten the kind of buzz we were hoping for.?

Cross said a broker in Vermont who sells insurance agencies saw the story and called to tell Cross he has an agency for sale.

?We would love to get into Vermont, but as much as expansion is key for us, this is where all our high-paid jobs are,? said Brent Cross. ?Our IT people come out of Bangor, our finance people, our high-paid, salaried positions are in Bangor, Maine. They?re not in Boston, they?re not in Manchester, they?re here.?

Romney looks to build ties with British leaders

LONDON (AP) ? With the Olympic Games as a backdrop, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Thursday plunged into a series of meetings with British leaders, including Prime Minister David Cameron.

The likely GOP nominee sought to send a message that he recognizes the close bonds between the U.S. and its top ally ? and to project an image of leadership.

"The world is a tumultuous and dangerous place," Romney said Thursday. "And certainly in many of the regions around the world we have great interests in having a common effort in seeing greater peace and prosperity." As he met with British leaders past and present, the Republican also praised "the unique relationship that exists between our nations, our commitment to common values, our commitment to peace in the world and a desire to see a stronger and growing economy."

Romney, whose decades in private business gave him ample exposure to international affairs, is a former one-term governor untested on the world's political stage. He hopes to convince voters back home that he is no novice on foreign affairs and that they should elect him as president in a complex world and with the U.S. facing a myriad of security threats.

Romney and Cameron met privately and exchanged pleasantries during the Republican's first full day in London.

The meeting came after Romney, who was head of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, said it wasn't clear whether Britain could overcome the issues that have dogged its final preparations for the Olympics.

"It's hard to know just how well it will turn out," Romney told NBC News in an interview broadcast Thursday in London.

During the public portion of his meeting with Cameron, Romney weighed in again after his comment drew attention in Britain. "It is impossible for absolutely no mistakes to occur," he said. "Of course there will be errors from time to time, but those are all overshadowed by the extraordinary demonstrations of courage, character and determination by the athletes."

Cameron told reporters that Romney and others would soon "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver."

Meeting with British officials is typically one of the first priorities of any new president, and establishing those relationships beforehand can help smooth any transition. It's not unusual for American presidential candidates to meet with British leaders during the campaign; Obama did so when he took a trip abroad as the likely Democratic nominee in 2008.

Romney's weeklong overseas trip will also take him to Israel and Poland.

As Thursday began, former Prime Minister Tony Blair hosted Romney at his private office few blocks off Hyde Park. The former Labour Party prime minister now serves as a special envoy to the Middle East, and the Romney campaign said the two men discussed the Middle East peace process, the situation in Syria, Iran and the wider region. They also discussed economic issues facing both countries, and chatted about the upcoming Olympic competitions.

Romney then met with Ed Miliband, the current leader of the Labour Party ? the opposition to Cameron's Conservative Party. Before that session, Miliband invited two reporters from what he called "my side" to ask questions, although Romney declined to take questions from American journalists.

Romney then moved on to a meeting with Foreign Secretary William Hague. The candidate was also slated to meet with Nick Clegg, the deputy prime minister, and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, Britain's top financial official.

Romney also will spend part of his time in London raising money and highlighting a key part of his resume ? the successful Salt Lake City Olympics he managed ? with an appearance Friday at the opening ceremonies of the London Games.

This isn't Romney's first meeting with Cameron; the two also talked when Romney visited London in 2011. This year, Cameron traveled to the U.S., where he met Obama and attended a state dinner in Washington but did not meet with Romney.

Romney's meeting with a deputy prime minister is somewhat unusual. It's happening because Britain has a coalition government, and Clegg's Liberal Democrats govern alongside Cameron's Conservative party.

The meetings come a day after the Daily Telegraph newspaper published a story quoting an unidentified Romney campaign adviser saying the Republican believes the U.S. relationship with Britain is special because of shared "Anglo-Saxon heritage" and the White House doesn't appreciate that shared history.

Romney, however, quickly distanced himself from any such view.

"I don't agree with whoever that adviser might be," Romney told NBC News, "but do agree that we have a very common bond between ourselves and Great Britain."

Nonetheless, Vice President Joe Biden and top Obama aides criticized Romney. "The comments reported this morning are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate Gov. Romney's readiness to represent the United States on the world's stage," Biden said.

Later Thursday, Romney planned to hold a high-dollar fundraiser at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in London's tony Knightsbridge district. One of the hosts of that fundraiser, former Barclays CEO Bob Diamond, withdrew from the event after he resigned in the wake of a rate-rigging scandal wracking British banks.

Accompanying Romney to some of his meetings Thursday were former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent, an adviser, and Kerry Healey, who served as lieutenant governor when Romney was governor of Massachusetts. Three of Romney's sons ? Tagg, Josh and Craig ? have also joined him in London.

A mausoleum built for Bolivar but worthy of Chavez

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The towering, white mausoleum in downtown Caracas is for many Venezuelans a lot like Hugo Chavez, only in architectural terms: disproportionately larger-than-life, flamboyant and self-important.

And no, the grand tomb was not built for Venezuela's socialist president, who has grappled with his own mortality in his recent battle with cancer and is running for re-election.

It will cradle the remains of South American independence leader Simon Bolivar, who Chavez daily, rapturously and exhaustively exalts as the spiritual father of his own self-styled revolution.

The 160-foot (50-meter) mausoleum is to be inaugurated in the coming days, though it is not quite finished.

Its construction has been delayed, shrouded in secrecy and alternately hailed as fit for a hero of Bolivar's historical grandeur and criticized as an exaggerated reflection of Chavez's own ego and alleged desire to be seen as a reincarnation of the independence hero.

Its solemn black granite-floored interior is ready, but the surrounding plaza is not. Workers have been toiling day and night in recent weeks, laying patio tiles, wiring lamps, landscaping and molding concrete steps.

Chavez proposed the shrine, devoted exclusively to "The Liberator," two years ago when he decided he needed to know whether Venezuela's main founding father was poisoned.

Historians have generally thought that Bolivar, who rallied revolutionaries who won independence from Spain for what would become Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, succumbed to tuberculosis in 1830 at age 47.

But Chavez said he suspected otherwise. So he ordered Bolivar's tomb opened to great fanfare and convened a team of international scientists to study the remains. The initial verdict came on Bolivar's last birthday anniversary: No evidence of foul play.

By then, government officials had already decided it was high time to move Bolivar's bones from the adjacent National Pantheon, where his remains have been kept since 1876 along with those of more than 100 fellow heroes and heroines of the nation, which at Chavez's urging was renamed the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Chavez on Tuesday unveiled a new, photograph-like portrait of Bolivar, produced by researchers based on their studies of his remains.

"This is his face," Chavez said as he unveiled two separate images of Bolivar's face during an event at the presidential palace marking the 229th anniversary of Bolivar's birth.

As for the mausoleum, Chavez said a few final details remain to be finished.

Its completion was initially promised for December 2011, then for May, the delays mocked by Chavez's detractors as typical of his 13-year-old administration.

Critics have also decried the lack of transparency.

Governments typically solicit proposals from renowned architects for such projects, opening them to an international field.

Not this one.

"In this case he gave it to friends, although it's not quite clear to me to whom exactly," said Oscar Tenreiro, a prominent Caracas architect who disapproves of the mausoleum.

No one has publicly identified the architect, though the person in charge of the project is Francisco Sesto, a Spanish-born architect named "Minister of State for the Transformation of Greater Caracas" by Chavez in late 2010.

Chavez created the job after an opposition candidate was elected mayor of Caracas; Sesto is a former culture minister whose job includes overseeing housing construction in the capital.

Chavez interrupted his televised speech on Tuesday to let Sesto make a televised appearance outside the mausoleum. "We're ready to turn over this mausoleum now," Sesto said.

Sesto did not respond to repeated requests for an interview through his spokeswoman.

In a public discussion of the project in early June, Sesto said it cost $140 million and was built because "we have always had the sense that Bolivar needed a mausoleum worthy of his grandeur."

"There was a lot of criticism that his remains were not in a dignified state" in the Pantheon, he added, noting that those who designed the mausoleum "heard a lot of ideas, including those of the president."

He did not say what exactly Chavez suggested, and defended the austere contemporary style, adding that natural light entering the roof would render "a sensitive and magical appearance" to Bolivar's pedestal-elevated sarcophagus.

In a blog entry entitled "Arrogance," Tenreiro remarked on the high quality of the construction and imported materials, including for the exterior white Spanish ceramic tiles and "weathering" steel that oxidizes to orange without losing strength.

"One appreciates the enormous mass, limpid and seductive in itself but gigantic and absurd, out of context, possessive of the same sin as the political system from which it originates."

Tenreiro expressed concern that the mausoleum's sloping southern facade, which connects it with the Pantheon, will become a water slide in heavy rains, potentially flooding the smaller, neoclassical former church.

A member of the governing board of Venezuela's College of Architects, Mitchele Vidal, did not like that the Pantheon, its back wall removed, was "converted into a hallway for entering the mausoleum."

Other critics have likened the sloping wall to that of a skate park, prompting Sesto to post on his blog a series of world-renowned edifices that also sport a slope.

Vidal called the mausoleum an "unnecessary" expenditure given the need in the very neighborhood it sits for investment in housing and better health care. From the top of the monument, where workers say a persistent flame will burn, one looks down to the east on a squalid collection of tin-roofed hovels.

But others believe Venezuelans deserve a towering monument.

"I don't think it's exaggerated at all," said Isis Berroteran, a 47-year-old housewife from the west-central town of Cagua as she admired it from her car. "The Pantheon, although spectacular, had become pretty small as the city grew."

A foreman whose workers were painting pipes inside the mausoleum's shell on Sunday, Jose Freytes, said he was initially skeptical of the monument but came to appreciate it as it took form.

Other countries, including the United States, have built imposing monuments to their founders. Why not Venezuela? After all, Bolivar helped liberate many lands.

"The essence of the idea is to elevate the name of Bolivar internationally. That's what it's about," said Freytes. "I think the president is doing the right thing."

Elias Pino, a historian and leading expert on Bolivar, considers the mausoleum Chavez's way of deepening his own identification in people's minds with the national hero.

"The political intent is that President Hugo Chavez be proclaimed the agent of Bolivar's will and interpreter of the gospel of Bolivar," he said.

"This monument will tie together both figures," he said, "and will not just be the mausoleum of Bolivar but also the entrance of President Chavez into the pantheon of patriots."

Vigil for Colo. victims draws Columbine survivor

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? Anne Marie Hochhalter, wearing a silver cross around her neck, sat in the front row of a vigil for the victims of the Colorado theater massacre.

Her connections to those wounded in the attack early Friday at an Aurora movie theater was closer than most.

Paralyzed in the 1999 Columbine massacre, the 30-year-old Hochhalter said she can offer a little hope to the victims' loved ones and the survivors.

"I would tell them that with time, it does get better. But it never goes away," she said.

Among the thousands at Sunday's vigil was Darius Harvey, 18, of Aurora, who was in the theater during the shooting and lost a friend in the massacre.

"I was there and I'm part of this community. I felt I should be here," Harvey said. "It's good for healing the community and I felt that it is very necessary for our state and community to know that our nation cares about us." He then joined the crowd in singing "Amazing Grace."

The vigil closed out a day of prayer and remembrance for the 12 theater-goers who were killed and the 58 others who were wounded by a lone gunman.

Congregations said prayers and sent out social-media appeals for neighbors who wanted to join in remembrance.

President Barack Obama, who visited victims' families and survivors, cited Scripture as he spoke at a hospital where some of the wounded were being treated.

The prayers came in different languages, but the message was the same ? hope and faith in the face of unimaginable evil.

"You're not alone, and you will get through it," said the Rev. Kenneth Berve, pastor at Grant Avenue United Methodist Church and a witness to Friday's horrors.

Berve's 19-year-old stepdaughter Emma Goos was in the movie theater, and when Berve and his wife arrived to pick her up, they saw a horror they couldn't have imagined.

At another Aurora church, elderly members of an aging Presbyterian congregation within walking distance to the suspected shooter James Holmes' apartment joined in prayer, though none had ever met him.

At the church of the suspect's family in San Diego, signs inside asked for prayers for those in Colorado affected by the shooting and for Holmes' family.

As the sun set later Sunday, several thousand gathered for the vigil on an Aurora lawn to pray for the victims.

Mourners released purple balloons and cheered police officers who responded to the shooting.

Gov. John Hickenlooper looked choked up in his remarks after meeting relatives of the dead with Obama.

"It was almost like somehow God had come down and picked the most vibrant and alive among us and taken them," the governor said.

Hickenlooper read the name of each victim, with the crowd shouting after each one: "We will remember."

Several pastors spoke, including one who also prayed for "the conversion" of the shooter.

Natalie Berzoza, 30, of Denver and her friend Jacqueline Vigil, 29, both stood holding candles. "You don't think that many people are there for you until something like this happens," Berzoza said.

Vigil recalled the shock of hearing of the attack. "I had the overwhelming feeling," she said, "as soon as it happened, that I needed to go to a prayer service, go to a church, do something."

Columbine students who survived what in 1999 was the worst school massacre in U.S. history are reliving their own experiences. And they're banding together to try to help. On Facebook and by phone, they are reaching out to people who witnessed the attack.

Young people were victims and witnesses in both the theater shootings and the ones at Columbine. The Columbine survivors want those at the movie theater to know that the road ahead of them won't be easy.

"Similar to the graduating senior class from Columbine, they may soon find themselves surrounded by people who have no clue that they were involved in a traumatic event," Columbine survivor Ben Lausten wrote on a Facebook page for survivors of school shootings.

"Breaking down and crying for no apparent reason (which is perfectly normal!) is harder to do in an office, or a business, or in 'normal' society," he said. "These victims have a challenging path ahead of them."

Another piece of advice: Don't waste time trying to figure out what motivated the shooter or shooters.

"It's a waste of time, and it gives them exactly what they want," said Hochhalter, who was eating lunch as a 17-year-old junior when she was shot in the chest and spinal cord on April 20, 1999. Even as the years pass, she said, she's no closer to understanding why Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed 11 classmates, a teacher, and then themselves.

"I don't think I'll ever understand," Hochhalter said.

But the Columbine survivors understand this: The Aurora survivors will need to talk. And they promise to listen.

"We know what they are going through, and we can help," wrote Michelle Romero Wheeler, a Columbine survivor who posted links to sites supporting people at the theater shooting.

Health News - Depression a global problem: It's not just Westerners ...

Depression and anxiety are found in every society in the world, debunking old theories that only Westerners get depressed.

These new findings come from the world's most comprehensive study of anxiety and depression research to date, published by researchers at The University of Queensland.

In two separate studies of anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder (that is, clinical depression) study authors found that surveys of clinical anxiety and depression have been conducted across 91 countries, involving more than 480,000 people.

They show that clinical anxiety and depression are serious health issues all around the world.

Anxiety disorders were more commonly reported in Western societies than in non-western societies, even those that are currently experiencing conflict.

Clinical anxiety affected around 10 per cent of people in North America, Western Europe and Australia/New Zealand compared to about 8 per cent in the Middle East and 6 per cent in Asia.

The opposite was true for depression, with people in Western countries least likely to be depressed.

Depression was found to be lowest in North America and highest in some parts of Asia and the Middle East.

About 9 per cent of people have major depression in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, such as India and Afghanistan, compared with about 4 per cent in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and East Asian countries including China, Thailand and Indonesia.

Alize Ferrari, lead author on the depression study, said findings suggested that depression appeared to be higher in parts of the world where conflict is occurring.

However, she warns that it can be difficult to obtain good quality data from some low and middle income countries.

?More investigation of the methods we use to diagnose depression and measure its prevalence in non-western countries is required, as well as more research on how depression occurs across the lifespan,? she said.

Lead author of the anxiety study, Amanda Baxter, also urged caution when comparing mental disorders across different countries.

?Measuring mental disorders across different cultures is challenging because many factors can influence the reported prevalence of anxiety disorders,? said Ms Baxter.

?More research is also needed to ensure that the criteria we are currently using to diagnose anxiety is suitable for people across all cultures.?

Both major depression and anxiety are found more commonly in women than in men.

The study also found that, while clinical depression is common throughout the lifespan, anxiety becomes less common in men and women over the age of 55.

About one in 21 people (4.7 per cent) of people will have major depression at any point in time.

Anxiety ? the most common of all mental disorders ? currently affects about one in 13 people (7.3 per cent).

The studies are the world's most comprehensive reviews of research on major depression and anxiety.

They are published as part of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study that will be released later this year. The GBD Study will include estimates for 220 diseases including 11 mental health disorders.

Additional information:

The Global Burden of Disease
The new Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (the GBD 2010 Study) is the first major effort since the original GBD 1990 Study to carry out a complete systematic assessment of global data on all diseases and injuries. GBD 2010 will produce comprehensive and comparable estimates of the burden of diseases, injuries and risk factors for 1990 and 2005, with projections for 2010. This project is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is collaboration between Harvard University, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Queensland, and the World Health Organization (WHO).
