A Massacre of Negligence

In 2010, the United Nations sent a group of soldiers from Nepal on a largely U.S.-financed peacekeeping mission in post-quake Haiti. But the U.N. neglected to adequately screen the mission?s soldiers for cholera, a disease that was raging in Nepal at the time but that Haiti had never experienced. Shortly after the soldiers moved to the U.N. base in Haiti located upstream from a major river system, Haitians began to contract the disease at an alarming rate, sickening more than 647,000 Haitians and taking more than 8,000 lives. Since then, U.N. leaders have attempted to deny the organization?s role in the epidemic and last week declared claims brought by Haitian families in the wake of the epidemic null and void. Read Jonathan Katz?s full story about the U.N. fiasco here.

Top NFL draft prospect from Utah has heart ailment

(AP) ? Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei will be heading home from the NFL's combine Monday night after doctors discovered he had a heart condition.

His agent, Bruce Tollner, confirmed the diagnosis in an email to The Associated Press on Monday. ESPN first reported the story Sunday night.

Lotulelei is one of the top prospects in April's draft. Some mock drafts even had the Utah star going No. 1 overall. He is expected to see a specialist.

A heart condition could have a significant impact on his draft stock as he tries to become the second Utes player chosen No. 1 overall. Alex Smith was taken first in the 2005 draft.

Splitsecnd Turns Any Car Into A Connected Car, Launches Plug-In Crash Detection Device

splitsecnd_logoMany new cars now feature an automatic crash-detection system that will call 911 for you whenever you are in a crash that is bad enough for your airbags to inflate. Adding this kind of functionality to an older car is typically very costly, but the Nashville-based startup Splitsecnd just launched an Internet-connected plugin for any car that offers the same kind of functionality and also lets you track your car's location online. The device costs $199 plus a $14.95 monthly service fee and is now available for purchase on Splitsecnd's website. It will ship within the next two weeks. The company hopes to start selling it at brick-and-mortar stores later this year.

Top 10 Underhyped Mac Apps

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsSome apps are essential, and everyone who's anyone knows to have them on their computer. Some apps, however, are fantastic yet fly under the radar. Today, we look at our top 10 underhyped apps for Mac.

We've shared our favorite underhyped webapps a few times before, but we were shocked to find we hadn't done the same for our beloved desktops. Last week we tackled Windows. Now it's time for the Mac.

10. Sonora

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsEven though it's now out of development, Sonora is still our favorite iTunes-alternative music player?especially now that it's open-sourced and free. The latest version greatly improves on an already awesome interface and updates Sonora's excellent on-the-fly song queueing features. My favorite part of Sonora, however, is the global hotkey that lets you bring up a search panel and type what you want. It works like an app launcher, except you get music results as you type. You can play a playlist, album, or just a song. If you still need to manage your music with iTunes because you use an iPhone (or other iDevice), Sonora will sync your collection at startup (or manually at any time of your choosing). It's a fantastic music app and we hope someone else continues its development, but in the meantime the latest beta is solid and deserves to be your music player of choice.

Download Sonora (Free)

9. Autograph

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsNeed to sign a document? Got a multitouch trackpad? All you need is Autograph and you can sign with your finger or a capacitive stylus. All you do is invoke the Autograph window with a hotkey of your choosing, sign, and insert the signature into whatever document you need. It's pretty much the easiest way to digitally sign anything.

Download Autograph ($3)

8. ScreenSharingMenulet

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsScreenSharingMenulet does one great thing: it puts a menu of computers available for screen sharing in your OS X menubar. Why Apple hasn't added this to OS X itself is hard to understand, because it's such a useful feature for anyone who accesses their computer screens remotely with any kind of regularity. Local and Back to My Mac Hosts show up in the menu by default, but you can add bookmarks to other desktops if you want as well. It may only do one thing, but it's one vital thing if you care about remote desktop on your Mac.

Download Screen Sharing Menulet ($1.99)

7. PopClip

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsPopClip has a very simple premise: add iOS-style copy and paste to your Mac. When you select text, PopClip will show copy and paste buttons. If that's all it did, however, it wouldn't be worth the cost. Fortunately, PopClip is extensible and allows you to integrate tons of other features of your choosing. Want to search for selected text on Google/Amazon/virtually anywhere else? No problem. Need an instant word count for your selection? Done. If you can think up a selected text function, PopClip can probably do it. It'll set you back $5, but a free trial is available if you want to give the app a shot first.

To learn how to get the most out of PopClip, check out our guide.

Download PopClip (Free Trial, $5)

6. GrowlVoice

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsGoogle Voice is awesome, but replying to text messages and checking voicemail from your computer could be quite a bit easier. GrowlVoice solves that problem on your Mac by shoving everything you'd want to do into your menubar. The elegant interface provides an easy way to send and respond to text messages, plus you can listen to voicemails and even call back if you want.

Download GrowlVoice (Free Trial, $5)

5. Unclutter

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsUnclutter stores all sorts of useful things at the top of your screen. Just move your mouse to the menu bar and swipe down with a couple of fingers to reveal a clipboard, file storage area, and a notepad. Basically, the app takes three handy tools you could use access to and throws them into one convenient, accessible-when-necessary space.

Download Unclutter ($3)

4. Found

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsYou saved a file...somewhere. It might've been in some folder on your computer, or perhaps you left it on a cloud service like Dropbox or Google Drive. No matter, because Found will search it all?and quickly, for that matter. If you're dealing with issues of data fragmentation due to storing it in many different places, you won't have to worry about losing things anymore if you install this free app.

Download Found (Free)

3. Adapter

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsMost of us use the wonderful Handbrake to convert videos, but the user interface isn't exactly intuitive for someone unfamiliar with video encoding. On top of that, formats are limited and you can't convert audio files or images. What free can do all of that? Adapter, the lesser-known multimedia powerhouse that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. It can convert all your movies, encode audio, and change the format of your images. It's pretty much as fast as Handbrake, too, as it uses the same encoding libraries. If you have media of any kind to convert, be sure to check it out.

Download Adapter (Free)

2. XtraFinder

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsXtraFinder adds a bunch of useful features the OS X Finder is lacking, such as cut and paste, putting folders on top in list view, dual panel and dual window view, global hotkeys, and tabbed windows?just to name a few. While Pathfinder can do much more, it costs $40. If you want to supercharge the OS X Finder without paying, XtraFinder is the answer.

Download XtraFinder (Free)

1. DropZone

Top 10 Underhyped Mac AppsDropzone is one of my personal favorite apps. If there's anything you want to do via drag and drop, Dropzone can handle the task. It can upload files to FTP sites, speak text, print documents, upload pictures to Flickr, and tons more. If a capability isn't built-in, Dropzone is extensible and might have a third-party option. If not, and you're feeling ambitious, you could even write an extension. All you do is drag a file to the menu bar, then move it to the task you want to complete. Dropzone will handle the rest. When uploading, it'll even copy a URL to the clipboard automatically. If you want to know more about what you can do with Dropzone, read our guide. It's a really awesome way to create a variety of useful shortcuts.

Download Dropzone (Free Trial, $10)

BHP's Kloppers Says Chinese Mineral Demand to Slow

SYDNEY--Growth in China's demand for mineral commodities could slow substantially over the coming years, forcing miners to focus on cutting costs, outgoing BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP, BHP.AU) Chief Executive Marius Kloppers said in an interview televised Sunday.

Over the next five years, Chinese demand for minerals could slow to growth of between 2% and 4% a year from 15% to 20% a year, Mr. Kloppers told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. in a joint interview with Chief Executive-elect Andrew Mackenzie. Mr. Kloppers didn't mention specific minerals.

"That means the suppliers will be able to respond and meet demand and, therefore, you have to be low-cost and you have to take into account that price is not going to help you here," Mr. Kloppers said.

His comments come after the world's biggest mining company by market capitalization on Wednesday announced that Mr. Kloppers will step down in May and be replaced by Mr. Mackenzie, the current head of the company's nonferrous metals division.

Mr. Mackenzie reiterated comments made Wednesday that he'll be committed to improving productivity at the miner, saying it will be a "top theme" of his tenure.

Squeaking through

Hotspur waited until the death, but they got what they came for in France.

Mousa Demb?l??s 90th-minute goal put the North London club through to the Europa Cup round of 16. The description on UEFA.com is magical: ?Demb?l? (Tottenham) scores! With time running out, the cultured midfielder buries the ball in the far corner with a thunderous low shot from 25 metres out on the left.?

For nearly the entire game, it looked as though Lyon would advance. In the 17th minute, Maxime Gonalons put the French side up 1-0 and evened the home-and-home 2-2 on aggregate. Lyon, however, led, thanks to the away goal it scored in the previous match.

But Tottenham kept on fighting. Clint Dempsey came on in the 66th minute for Aaron Lennon and nearly equalized himself but blasted a header over the crossbar. Twenty-four minutes later, his teammate would make amends.

Tottenham will meet Inter Milan in the round of 16.

The trip to the Continent wasn?t all good, however, as a group of Tottenham fans were attacked in Lyon the night before the match. Roughly 50 assailants threw chairs and made Nazi salutes after breaking into a Spurs supporters party. Stay classy, Europe.

And here?s a link to a gif of Brad Friedel trolling the Lyon faithful because why not?

Military expected to be gay parade faves

The military in full uniform will march along with some more scantilly or fancifully dressed members of the rainbow community in the Auckland Pride Parade.

Saturday's parade along Ponsonby Road is one of the highlights of the two-week long Auckland Pride Festival.

Parade coordinator Jonathan Smith told NZ Newswire the parade has attracted 42 entries and will involve 55 vehicles and about 1200 people.

Even bigger crowds are expected to line Ponsonby Road for the event, which kicks off at 4pm at Western Park.

About 50 members of the New Zealand Defence Force's Outwatch group - a peer support network for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender personnel - will be among those proudly taking part in the parade.

Defence force staff - including members of the army, navy, air force and civilians - will be able to march in the parade in uniform.

"It's quite significant for us as a community," Mr Smith says.

"It shows how progressive our military really is."

Mr Smith says the defence force personnel are "definitely going to be a crowd favourite".

The last Pride Parade was held in 2001, when it was known as the Hero Parade.

(AP) ? A meteor streaked across the sky and exploded over Russia's Ural Mountains with the power of an atomic bomb Friday, its sonic blasts shattering countless windows and injuring about 1,100 people.

The spectacle deeply frightened many Russians, with some elderly women declaring that the world was coming to an end. Many of the injured were cut by flying glass as they flocked to windows, curious about what had produced such a blinding flash of light.

The meteor ? estimated to be about 10 tons ? entered the Earth's atmosphere at a hypersonic speed of at least 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement.

Amateur video showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time, just after sunrise, leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, a city of 1 million about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.

"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

The meteor hit less than a day before asteroid 2012 DA14 is to make the closest recorded pass by the Earth for a rock of its size ? about 17,150 miles (28,000 kilometers). But the European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection ? just cosmic coincidence.

The meteor released several kilotons of energy above the region, the Russian science academy said. According to NASA, it was about 15 meters (49 feet) wide before it hit the atmosphere, about one-quarter the size of the passing asteroid.

Some meteorite fragments fell in a reservoir outside the town of Chebarkul. The crash left an eight-meter (26-foot) -wide crater in the ice.

The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in the city were damaged. At one zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

The Interior Ministry said about 1,100 people sought medical care after the shock wave and 48 of them were hospitalized. Most of the injuries were caused by flying glass, officials said.

There was no immediate word on any deaths or anyone struck by space fragments.

Meteors typically cause sizeable sonic booms when they enter the atmosphere because they are traveling so much faster than the speed of sound. Injuries on the scale reported Friday, however, are extraordinarily rare.

"I went to see what that flash in the sky was about," recalled resident Marat Lobkovsky. "And then the window glass shattered, bouncing back on me. My beard was cut open, but not deep. They patched me up. It's OK now."

Another resident, Valya Kazakov, said some elderly women in his neighborhood started crying out that the world was ending.

Russian-language hashtags for the meteorite quickly shot up into Twitter's top trends.

Lessons had just started at Chelyabinsk schools when the meteor exploded, and officials said 258 schoolchildren were among those injured. Amateur video footage showed a teacher speaking to her class as a powerful shockwave hit the room.

Yekaterina Melikhova, a high school student whose nose was bloody and whose upper lip was covered with a bandage, said she was in her geography class when a bright light flashed outside.

"After the flash, nothing happened for about three minutes. Then we rushed outdoors. I was not alone, I was there with Katya. The door was made of glass, a shock wave made it hit us," she said.

Russian television ran footage of athletes at a city sports arena who were showered by shards of glass from huge windows. Some of them were still bleeding.

Other videos showed a long shard of glass slamming into the floor close to a factory worker and massive doors blown away by the shock wave.

The vast implosion of glass windows exposed many residents to the bitter cold as temperatures in the city were expected to plummet to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit) overnight.

The regional governor immediately urged any worker who can pane windows to rush to the area to help out.

Meteroids are small pieces of space debris ? usually parts of comets or asteroids ? that are on a collision course with the Earth. They become meteors when they enter the Earth's atmosphere. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, but if they survive the frictional heating and strike the surface of the Earth they are called meteorites.

The site of Friday's spectacular show is about 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) west of Tunguska, which in 1908 was the site of the largest recorded explosion of a space object plunging to Earth. That blast, attributed to a comet or asteroid fragment, is generally estimated to have been about 10 megatons; it leveled some 80 million trees.

Scientists believe that a far larger meteorite strike on what today is Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs about 66 million years ago. According to that theory, the impact would have thrown up vast amounts of dust that blanketed the sky for decades and altered the climate on Earth.

The meteor could have produced much more serious problems. Chelyabinsk is an industrial town long held to be one of the world's most polluted areas, and the area around it hosts nuclear and chemical weapons disposal facilities.

Vladimir Chuprov of Greenpeace Russia said the Russian government has underestimated potential risks of the region. He noted that the meteor struck only 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Mayak nuclear storage and disposal facility, which holds dozens of tons of weapons-grade plutonium.

A chemical weapons disposal facility at Shchuchye also contains some 6,000 tons (5,460 metric tons) of nerve agents, including sarin and VX, about 14 percent of the chemical weapons that Russia is committed to destroy.

The panic and confusion that followed Friday's meteorite crash quickly gave way to typical Russian black humor and entrepreneurial instincts.

Several people smashed in the windows of their houses in the hopes of receiving compensation, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

Others quickly took to the Internet and put what they said were meteorite fragments up for sale.

One of the most popular jokes was that the meteorite was supposed to fall on Dec. 21 last year ? when many believed the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world ? but was delivered late by Russia's notoriously inefficient postal service.

The dramatic event prompted an array of reactions from prominent Russians.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, speaking at an economic forum in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, said the meteor could be a symbol for the forum, showing that "not only the economy is vulnerable, but the whole planet."

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for his vehement statements, blamed the Americans.

"It's not meteors falling. It's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.

"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Jim Green, NASA's director of planetary science, called the back-to-back celestial events an amazing display.

"This is indeed very rare and it is historic," he said on NASA TV. "These fireballs happen about once a day or so, but we just don't see them because many of them fall over the ocean or in remote areas. "

Reproductive workings of a harvester ant dynasty

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Ants are just about everywhere you look, and yet it's largely unknown how they manage to be so ubiquitous. Scientists have understood the carnal mechanism of ant reproduction, but until now have known little of how successful the daughters of a colony are when they attempt to found new colonies.

For the first time, Stanford biologists have been able to identify specific parent ants and their own children in wild ant colonies, making it possible to study reproduction trends.

And in a remarkable display of longevity, an original queen ant was found to be producing new ants several decades after mating, sending out daughter queens throughout her 20- to 30-year lifespan.

"Most animals produce offspring for a while, and then they enter a life stage where they don't," Gordon said. "These queen ants are mating once, storing that sperm in a special sac, keeping it alive and using it to fertilize eggs for another 25 years."

From an ecological viewpoint, an ant colony is much like a tree putting out seeds, with the potential to create new trees. An ant queen produces genetically identical worker ants that live in the same colony, and also produces sons, and daughter queens. The daughter queens, after mating, establish new colonies of their own.

Deborah Gordon, a biology professor at Stanford and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, has been studying a particular population of harvester ant colonies in southeastern Arizona for 28 years, meticulously recording when a new colony rises or an older one falls.

Gordon's group took the DNA fingerprint of each colony by analyzing a section of microsatellite, or "junk," DNA to identify which colonies were related. By pairing the genetic analysis with the long-term observations, Gordon was able to determine the original queen and colony, and the order in which the daughter queens and subsequent generations established new colonies.

The researchers also found that only about 25 percent of the colonies reproduce at all, and many of the daughter queens are not successful. The entire population -- the study group consisted of about 300 colonies -- relies on just a few queens to make most of the offspring year after year.

"We don't know whether all harvester ant populations always behave this way, or whether these trends hold true for all 11,000 ant species, because nobody has identified colony offspring before," Gordon said. "This gives us new insight on how ant populations change over time."

In general, ants play an important role in agriculture around the world, with some helping to disperse seeds while others eat herbivorous insects. Understanding how populations of ant colonies reproduce and expand, and the rate at which they do so, could be useful in managing invasive ant species, predicting crop yields and understanding the ecology of tropical forests.

"If you're trying to understand how a population grows -- say, you are trying to keep a population of lions going -- the first thing you need to know is how many lionesses you have, and how many cubs they have and can support per year," Gordon said. "For ecological purposes, it's very useful to be able to say how ant populations will grow. This is the first step toward understanding how to predict numbers of ant colonies."

The study was published Jan. 31 in the online version of the Journal of Animal Ecology.

Software tracks terrorists ? and you ? via social networks

Web software designed by the defense firm Raytheon can scour Facebook, Twitter and check-in sites such as Foursquare to create an instant dossier covering a suspect's likely geographic locations and activities.

Raytheon calls it Rapid Information Overlay Technology (RIOT), and privacy advocates think it goes too far. "This sort of software allows the government to surveil everyone," Ginger McCall, attorney and director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center's Open Government program, told NBC News Monday.

"It scoops up a bunch of information about totally innocent people. There seems to be no legitimate reason to get this, other than that they can."

While some "terrorists," or those who might be threats to national security, use social networking, it's doubtful many of them show check-ins at local clubs or coffee shops, said McCall.

"The likelihood of this actually pulling in actual terrorists is low ? it seems to be a lot of white noise," she said.

NBC News contacted Raytheon about RIOT. In an emailed statement Monday, the company would only say this:

Raytheon, as a leader in cybersecurity, offers advanced capabilities to government customers. We're focused on providing them the best available solutions that meet their constantly evolving requirements.

A report about RIOT was first published Sunday by The Guardian, which shared a video it obtained about how RIOT works. (We can't embed the video, but you should have a look at it on The Guardian's site.)

In the video, Raytheon's Brian Urch, principal investigator for RIOT, shows how easily the software can track one of Raytheon's employees, named Nick. The system combines Nick's Foursquare check-ins with the GPS data encoded automatically on his posted photos. The system creates a pie chart of Nick's most favorite spots to visit, and reveals without question what time he likes to hit the gym.

"6 a.m. appears to be the most frequently visited time at the gym, so if you ever did want to try to get a hold of Nick ? or get a hold of his laptop ? you might want to visit the gym at 6 a.m. Monday," Urch says ominously.

A Raytheon spokesman said in an email to the Guardian that RIOT is not being used right now, but rather is "a big data analytics system design we are working on with industry, national labs and commercial partners to help turn massive amounts of data into useable information to help meet our nation's rapidly changing security needs."

And just because this software neatly packages information in ways that can prove awkward or even incriminating, it is not breaking through privacy barriers to get it. Instead, it uses what people have voluntarily posted for public consumption. The key is, therefore, knowing what you're posting.

Users need to be careful, said privacy lawyer McCall. Social networking sites "work very, very hard to push more data into the public realm, and often users have no idea how much data is being made publicly available, and the companies make it very difficult for users to control their own information."

For example, she said, "other people can check you in" at a location, even though "it may not be data that you put out there. On Facebook, it allows your friends to check you in, and if your friends don't set their privacy setting" so that others can't see that, "you can be tagged and checked in."

"I went to a concert with a friend a month ago, and she likes to publicize those things on Facebook," McCall said. "So it was on there that she was at a certain club with Ginger McCall."

"When (most users) sign up for sites like Facebook or Foursquare," she said, "they never would guess that their information is about to be aggregated," and perhaps even "used to track them down" with software such as Raytheon's RIOT.

Obliterated Auto Insurance Ads - The No Nonsense Car Insurance ...

Wouldn't it be nice to have no nonsense car insurance? It might surprise you to find out No Nonsense is actually a car insurance company in the United Kingdom and it produced a series of hilarious ads.

This commercial finds a horribly obnoxious 25-year-old gloating to his neighbor about his lowered insurance rates. The guy speeds up in his ridiculous looking car and begins yelling and screaming about how it is his birthday. The other guy stands and listens to the nonsense for a few seconds and simply nods his head.

Just when the gloating is getting really intense, a massive brick drops onto the car and debris goes everywhere.

This commercial alludes to the fact that most men can get lower insurance rates after their 25th birthday. This is a practice No Nonsense car insurance aims to cut out completely.

Large, ancient landslides delivered preferred upstream habitats for coho salmon

Feb. 11, 2013 ? A study of the Umpqua River basin in the Oregon Coast Range helps explain natural processes behind the width of valleys and provides potentially useful details for river restoration efforts designed to improve habitats for coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch).

Coho salmon thrive in broad, flat valleys that contain multiple auxiliary channels to the main river. These valleys formed after large landslides altered the landscape, said study co-author Joshua J. Roering, professor of geological sciences at the University of Oregon. The network of secondary channels, while often devoid of water in the dry season, fill and provide a calm, safe haven away from swiftly running currents for the fish during periods of heavy rain and storms. They now have been identified as a critical component of salmon habitat.

While geologists and hydrologists long ago documented how river-channel width and depth varies, little had been done to understand how valleys beyond the channels form, and why they may be narrow or wide, Roering said. The study -- online ahead of print in the journal Geology -- combined on-the-ground observations and a remote-sensing technology known as airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR).

"There are two things that this research tells us," Roering said. "Valleys are things we can see from airplanes or from maps, and they behave, if you let them, in a very simple way. They get wider as the river gets bigger. We've all seen that. What we've learned here is that if you introduce variable geology and geomorphology -- big landslides, messiness that happens in the world -- the valleys tend to narrow and widen, and fish appear to love that. They seem to respond to the heterogeneity that is so inherent in most real landscapes. Nature is messy, and the fish have adapted to that."

Roering used LiDAR in previous research, including a project in which he and colleagues discovered a dry lakebed that formed some 22,500 years ago by a landslide and later drained in northern California's Eel River basin. That paper -- published Nov. 22, 2011, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences -- also connected landslides to a divergence of genetics in two present-day steelhead trout populations occupying the river.

Christine May, lead author of the new paper, said that Roering's work on landslides and her own previous observations led to the newly published research. May, a biologist at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., at the time of the project was a visiting UO professor under the Meierjurgen Visiting Fellowship. While a graduate student at Oregon State University, she had seen broad valleys and productive fish habitats upstream of ancient landslides while doing fieldwork after 1996 floods.

"This observation had lingered in my mind over the years, and when Josh's study on predicting the occurrence of these large landslides on a landscape scale was published I became very excited to pursue this area of research with him," she said. "Correspondingly, my colleague Kelly Burnett with the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station in Corvallis published a predictive model that mapped the location of potentially productive fish habitat in the same area as Josh mapped the large landslides."

Combing the two predictive models, May said: "It became apparent that there was a strong linkage between the occurrence of large landslides and the location of highly productive salmon habitat."

For the study, May, Roering, Burnett and L. Scott Eaton, also of James Madison University, went into the field, studying the architecture of river valleys. They used LiDAR provided by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, focusing on Harvey and Elk creeks -- part of the Umpqua River basin where Roering previously documented ancient landslides. Researchers measured the widths of the valley using the high-resolution topographic data and showed how widths varied based on watershed-mathematical formulas used to plot and map the terrain.

To understand the activities of the salmon, researchers applied topographically derived stream-layering techniques and a formula created by Burnett in 2007 for estimating the "intrinsic potential" of each stream to provide rearing habitats for Coho salmon.

They found that valleys downstream of landslides are narrower than would be expected, which suggested that valley constriction had subverted valley widening. Deep-seated landslides, the authors noted, caused wide valley segments to occur higher in the channel network than would otherwise be expected. Off-channel streams perched in mountain drainages, they said, increase habitat diversity and lead to a greater abundance of salmonid productivity.

"This study establishes how a valley sets its width," Roering said. "More importantly, the anomalies that make valleys look different are primarily controlled by big landslides in the Oregon Coast Range. Big events occurring thousands of years ago have had a long-running, persistent impact on the valley floor. So even if landslides sound scary or deadly, they've been active out there for long periods of time, and they make great habitat for salmon over the long term."

The findings provide fundamental insights on the geological and ecological controls on salmon habitat, May said. "I do believe the results will have broad applications for endangered species conservation and management," she added.

"Dr. Roering's explanation of how destructive natural forces can create fertile habitat answers some long-lingering questions about the geomorphology of our region," said Kimberly Andrews Espy, UO vice president for research and innovation, and dean of the graduate school. "This research helps us appreciate the richness and diversity of our state by furthering our understanding of Oregon's distinctive landscape and the plants and animals that live here."

The Umpqua River was chosen because of its "amazing uniformity," Roering said. "If mountains are being uplifted through tectonic forces -- the rocks are going upward and erosion is wearing them down -- we tend to see these two forces balancing each other. This mountain range has achieved a rough, steady state. It looks the same through time, even with a dynamic interface."

The National Science Foundation funded a portion of the research through a Division of Earth Sciences grant (0952186) to Roering.

Roman Politics

Rome AH: Senatus Populusque Romanus

After the death of Emperor Caligula, the Republic is restored. However, a return to the Republic isn't an end to all powers. Rome has always thrived on. In 45 A.D. in the Eternal City, how far will you go for your goals? And will the Republic endure?

This diagram shows the ladder of political advancement (cursus honorum) during the Republic. The straight ladder shows the typical path of advancement beginning with election to quaestor, the lowest office, and proceeding to consul, the highest (of course very few men made it that far; it was quite exceptional when a man like Cicero, who did not come from a noble family, was elected consul). Red text designates ?curule magistrates,? who had the right to sit on a special ivory folding stool (sella curulis) as a symbol of their office; they also had the right to wear the purple-bordered toga (toga praetexta). Offices marked with an asterisk carried imperium, the highest political authority, which included the right to command an army, to interpret and carry out the law, and to pass sentences of death. Magistrates whose title began with ?pro? were in charge of provinces.

When the Legislative Assemblies drawn from the citizens of Rome became ineffective, Emperor Tiberius transferred their power to legislate laws to the Senate and himself. With the restoration of the Republic, the Assemblies are gathered to elect Senators, Consuls, and Tribunes.

Key Positions

Consuls- Serving as an Executive Head of the Republic, Consuls hav the authority to exercise executive powers such as convening the Senate and Assemblies, mediate Senate debates, and oversee other Magistrates. They also serve as Commanders-In-Chief of the Roman Legions. Consuls have large amounts of legislative, judicial, and executive power. However, Consuls can serve only for one year unless an emergency occurs.

Tribunes- Tribunes are elected to practice a veto power. They may veto any magistrate's actions and Senate actions. They may address the Senate, but cannot vote. Their veto power extends only to Rome herself and not any of the provinces. A set number of Tribunes is reserved for a Plebeian.

Quaestor: Appointed by the Senate, though originally appointed by the Assemblies, Quaestors oversees the financial matters and treasury of the Republic.

Aedile- These are in charge of overseeing buildings in Rome and organizing official festivals religious or otherwise. Appointed by the Senate. A set number are reserved for Plebeians.

Praetor- A Praetor served as a magistrate and commander of of an army should the need arise. They also serve as administrators in the governmental bureaucracy.

Censor- These officials were in charge of overseeing Roman censuses.

Dictator- A rare appointment, absolute power is granted to a dictator in the face of a great threat. With the recent history of Emperors, this appointment has a negative connotation.

Lil Family Blog: DIY At Home AI Babies: A Recipe

Before having kids, I found myself "coming out" a lot less than I do after having kids.? The internet already increased the frequency (?http://lilfamily13.blogspot.com/2010/04/coming-out-and-out-and-out-and-out.html?), but now I find myself explaining our family all the time.? At the pediatrician "Coraline has two moms", in public places when people say "oh she's so cute, is she yours?" and gesture at only one of us, we say "she's ours."? Etc.? People just tend to question a lot more when you have kids.

And the #1 question that everyone has on their minds (and a few even ask)... is where did these children come from???

We are pretty open and encourage questions, i'd way rather someone ask us then wonder or assume something that is incorrect.? With our first pregnancy in 2007, a few people even asked/assumed if I had cheated in our relationship and got pregnant by accident!? We've had people ask/assume that I had "relations" with a man in order to get pregnant.? (I didn't.)? People have assumed that we had IVF or other high tech/expensive ways of getting pregnant (we didn't.)? Some people are just curious and that's OK, but some people inquire because they (or their sisters, cousins, etc) want to get pregnant also.? And whereas, i don't consider myself an expert, we have gotten pregnant 3x and i have been asked for advice so often, I decided to just spell it all out.

So here is our DIY (Do It Youself) Recipe for an At Home AI (Artificial Insemination) Baby:

Ingredients:
Sperm!
Instead Softcups
Syringe (optional)
PreSeed sperm-friendly lubricant (optional)
Really Good Timing

The most important, is the "donation."? We are lucky enough to have the kind of friend in our lives who we could ask to be a part of our family in that way.? Lily's conception happened on our first try over the course of a weekend.? Then 4 years later, we got pregnant again on our first try, but I miscarried soon after.? It took 5 cycles to get pregnant with our "sticky" baby, Coraline, (who also had a touch-and-go start.)? Our donor was kind enough to travel to us for 5 months in a row (we live 98 miles away), late nights even on work nights, so we could do the exchange with fresh samples.? And he is also the kind of friend i could trust with my life... literally... to give us a clean sample.? I know there are websites out there to match strangers as known donors/recipients, and they provide paperwork from doctors, but the truth is that it makes me nervous.? So be 100% sure that your donation comes from someone healthy and trustworthy.

Second is the Instead Softcups.? I swear by these.? And no, they are not endorsing this or paying me in any way.? I just like to talk about products I like and believe in.
For those not familiar, these cups are meant to be menstrual cups, to catch the "flow".? They are a safer alternative to tampons (no toxic shock syndrome with these).? They are basically a plastic ring with a clear "bag" attached to the bottom.? You squish the ring and insert them ALL the way up there... against the cervix, the ring pops open when you get it in place, and the bag catches any liquids and rests below the cervix.? They can safely be left in place for 12 hours.? They are easy to insert, somewhat tricky to remove, but not so bad once you get the hang of it (practice and don't panic.). I thought my first one got stuck in a moment of panic and had to really relax to get it out.

Syringes can be purchased at medical supply places or online i'm sure.? But on the fly, we bought it at a pet supply store- it's the kind meant to give medicines to animals and/or to feed baby animals.? These pet ones are actually quite long, so that helps.

And lubricant isn't necessary, but if you prefer it, make sure to get PreSeed, the only one that is sperm friendly (it is ph balanced as to not kill or slow down the sperm.)

Directions:
Insert sperm/semen.? Insert Instead cup to trap semen against the body.? Obtain a "Big O" if possible.? Lay back with hips elevated to allow gravity to help.? 12 hours later- remove cup and keep your fingers crossed.

OK... here is the long version.

Because i was worried about wasting, I thought that every time the sample was transferred, the residue left behind might contain thousands of Little Swimmers, so my idea was to transfer as little as possible and touch as few surfaces as possible.? So we asked our donor to "put" the sample directly into the Instead cup (which are sterile from the plastic wrap anyway.)? I had a little pink glass jar on my bathroom counter (from Target's Shabby Chic collection) at the time, and the Instead cup sat in it perfectly (so you could put it down without it spilling or touching anything unsanitary), and so that's what we used both the first time and the 2-6 times four years later.? So i was given the Instead cup with the sample inside- resting inside a glass jar.

With Lily we used the pet syringes.? We sucked the sample up into the syringe, inserted ALL the way up, plunged it in there.? Then we inserted the SAME Instead cup (because it still had what we couldn't suck into the syringe inside) inside me.? I left the cup inside overnight and took it out the next morning.? After inserting everything, i laid with my hips elevated for 15 minutes on each side (right, back, left, front) like a rotisserie chicken to allow gravity to make sure if hit the spot.? Is this necessary, who knows?? But it can't hurt.? I did the same method cycle 2 (which was 4 years later and the baby i miscarried) and cycle 3 (where i didn't get pregnant.)

After having years to think about it, I wondered if the syringes were even necessary, and i wondered about transfer reside and if i was wasting, so Cycles 4-6 i decided to skip the syringe.? So basically I just took the (full) Instead cup and inserted it against my cervix.? I still lay with hips elevated for a while, but in my mind, not a drop was wasted this way.? And because the cup holds everything right in place, there's no drippage.? Again, i left it in for 12 hours then removed.? Cycles 4-5 were this method and no pregnancy, but cycle 6 resulted in our second baby!? So i got pregnant with and without syringes, but every time used the cups.

As far as when to do this.... that's one of the most important parts.? As much sperm as you have, you can't get pregnant without an egg.

In the 6 months before even trying (June-Dec 2007) i did a ton of research.? Before that, i'm pretty sure I had no idea when the average woman ovulated, let alone when i did.? I used a website to help track my cycles, and tracked 3 cycles before we even started trying.? I took my basal body temperature (BBT- the temp you take first thing in the morning when your body is at rest, before you even get out of bed) and charted it.? A rise in BBT shows ovulation, and using this info, you can see patterns and predict when you'll ovulate in future cycles.? And i used OPKs (ovulation predictor kits), basically a stick you pee on like a pregnancy test, and when you are close to ovulating, you get a + result and are said to ovulate 12-48 hours later.
There are tons of websites that explain both BBT and OPKs, so I won't.? But the relative thing is- KNOW WHEN you ovulate.

It's believed that sperm can live for up to 5 days inside a female, but the egg only lives 12-24 hours.? With that in mind, i always thought it was best to inseminate on the early side, to have the sperm waiting and ready for the egg to pop.? (Which is why you need to be able to accurately predict ovulation, days before it happens.)? I also feel like this is the case where "more is better" (not the case with makeup), and so we did a few inseminations each cycle to "flood the gates" so to speak.? I aimed to inseminate 3 days before ovulation, the day before, and the day of, if possible.? 3x a cycle in the days leading up to ovulation.? (NOTE: according to the Shettles Method, inseminating days before ovulation also sways for a girl - and i have 2 girls.? Swaying for a boy requires you inseminate ONLY on ovulation day, so if you really want a boy, don't do it this way, and research Shettles Method more.)

I think that covers it.? As far as more traditional attempts at getting pregnant... what i'd take from this is the timing and the Instead cups (can be inserted after intercourse, to keep everything in place!)

So from now on, when people inquire HOW we made our beautiful babies, i'm going to point them here.

P.S. - see the ads below and in the sidebars? ?If you see one that interests you, PLEASE click on it! ?It really helps me out!

My grandmother gave me a piece of carnival glass that her date won for her when she was 15 ? that would have been about 1932 (?). Oh, and a silver dollar from 1880 and a half dollar from 1923.

I had my great-grandmother?s Bible. The date it was given to her was 1927. Can?t say as I know where it is anymore. We?ve done a lot of moving in the last couple of years and a lot of things have disappeared.

@Seek_Kolinahr I have a prayer book that was my grandfather?s, but I think given to him by his family. Now I am wondering how old it is. I?m glad you mentioned the bible, now I am going to check the date in that book.

Some sturdy Depression-era cookware from my white family.

I was never close with my grandparents, or any family outside of my home, so I don?t have any family heirlooms.

My grandfather gave me a $20 gold coin from 1904.

I have a book that was given to me by my aunt before she passed away. It was given to her by her mother (my grandmother), who received it from her father (my great-grandfather).

Not completely sure, but I?d guess it?s my great grandfather?s leather strop, from sometime in the early 1900s. My home is also a family home, built in 1915, so I feel like that counts.

JLeslie's avatar

The prayer book is from 1921.

My grandmother-in-laws engagement ring, which was given to her in 1921.
My Father?s christening gown which my grandmother made in 1918.

I have my great grandmother?s wedding band. She married during the Civil War, so we are talking 1860?s. It is rose gold and has some kind of engraving on it, but it is so worn that you can?t really tell. I always thought it was copper, but in doing some research on the styles of the era, rose gold was a big thing then, so that is probably what it is.

@gailcalled Unfortunately, the book has little in the way of publication data. It is published by Thomas Kelly Catholic Publishers. The title is Christ in His Church: Her Dogmas and Her Saints, with an imprimatur* by John Cardinal McCloskey, who was Archbishop of New York from 1864 to 1885. The book also has a section which contains portraits of Supreme Pontiffs (Popes), and the last one is Leo XIII who was elected pope in 1878 and died in 1903. Given those facts, I?d estimate the publication date to be somewhere between 1878 and 1885.

As far as first edition, I can?t tell. The estimate above sure fits in with my great-grandfather?s age, and also the time he was here in the United States (he visited his daughters here on several occasions, and died in the flu pandemic in 1919).

*The ?imprimatur?, as some of you might know, is the official ?OK? from an archbishop or cardinal. It verifies that there are no errors in doctrine or dogma contained within the book.

A huge roll top desk with a glass doored book case that sits on top of it. It was made by my husband?s grandfather from the wood of one cherry tree. He ran out of wood and two of the drawers were made of orange crate wood on the inside. It has a secret compartment. It?s pre-1900.
We also have a cradle he made, which was handed down in the family as children were born.

@Yetanotheruser I?m glad you told us about the book ? I was wondering what book could hold so much significance that it has been passed down and treasured for so many generations. I still don?t quite understand why this book, out of all the other church books, was the one that survived. Have you read it?

My great-grandmother?s Shabbes brass candlesticks that came from Russia; probably late 19th century.

Yetanotheruser's avatar

@Skaggfacemutt I haven?t read it completely, but the title page itself is fascinating:

Christ And His Church: Her Dogmas And Her Saints, with Moral Reflections, Critical Illustrations and Explanatory Notes by the Rev. Henry Rutter, Rev. Alban Butler, Rev. J. O?Leary, D. D. and John Gilmary Shea, LL.D.

(wait, there?s more!)

With a Preface By the Rev. Charles Constantine Pise, D.D Containing Explanations on the Parables, Discourses and Miracles of our Saviour.

The Dogmas, Sacraments and Sacramentals of the Holy Catholic Church.

The Chief Points of Catholic Belief and the Great Articles of the Catholic Faith

Illustrated

I guess my aunt wanted me to have it because I was the one in the family who came closest to being a priest (a dream of every Irish-Catholic family).

My mom has a wooden trunk that a relative of mine brought with him from Russia to the United States in the early 20th century, but the trunk itself dates far longer ago than that. It?s from at least the late 18th century. I remember the trunk always being at my grandmother?s house as a kid, in the living room?it now sits in the master bedroom of our house, mostly as decoration but also as a storage for various old photo albums and such. It?s definitely something I intend to keep.

A heavy brass mortar and pestle. It was my great-grandmother?s and possibly she inherited it. Got to be well over a 100 years old.

A photo of my great-grandfather, late 1800?s.
A sideboard chest of drawers that my grandfather made out of cherry wood from his groves, 1930?s.
I also have a tiger?s eye ring that my grandfather always wore, I suspect that is from early 1900?s.

The oldest piece that I can think of is a china set from my maternal great-grandmother. I have a figure of Jesus from my paternal great-grandmother. No idea how old they are, but the figure of Jesus is probably not that old?it was really only handed down to me.

A coin from the 1700s that came down through my husband?s family. One my side, a pitcher that belonged to my great grandmother.

I have an interesting hand painted box that contains several small tin type photos of an unknown grandmotherly woman and a girl of about 8.
There is a date of 1876 inscribed on the inside of the box itself with the intials S.B.C.
They are U.F.M.s
Unidentified family members. haha

The box also contains a strange ancient purple velvet plaque of sorts that holds hat pins and several pairs of knitted and crocheted baby hats & booties along with some misc. hair pins and a woven hat. There is also a cracked pocket knife with a bone handle and one tiny pearl button and a rusty bullet shell of some sort. 0-o
A mystery.

I have my grandmother?s ring. It would be over 100 years old now. I also have my parent?s carving set with a bone handle that?s worn. I don?t know if it was passed down to them.

I have a delightful and very small birthday reminder book that belonged to my paternal great great grandmother, all the previous owners names are inscribed on the inside cover, it is something I really treasure and dates from the 1850s.

N-word Hair Tobacco I got it from my Grandmother. One big tin that still has tobacco in it and one small un opened paper package of it. They are dated 1916. They aren?t worth much but are a true piece of history.

I can?t say I have any kind of heirloom. We never had much and really, I could do without the memory.

I have several things from my great-grandmother, who died at age 92, shortly before I got married the first time. I wore her wedding ring along with my own, and inherited her bakelite hand mirror, brush & buttonhook set. They are all safely packed away. Probably the oldest things I have are photos of her when she was a little girl, which hang on my family gallery wall. Probably from around 1900?
