SA Boxing Champions honoured

THERE is a need to intensify our efforts in support of sports activities in the eThekwini area and in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.? These were the words echoed by the Provincial and Municipality delegation at the recent official handover of the Champions? boxing belts to two of eThekwini?s South African Boxing Champions, Wiseman Ndlovu (heavy weight champion) and Christopher Buthelezi (middle weight champion) held at the Natural Science Museum recently.

The event was hosted by eThekwini Sports and Recreation Development Department in partnership with the Provincial Sport and Recreation Department. Both parties congratulated the two champions. ?We can use sports to achieve social cohesion in our Municipality, we have produced many national and international champions from all sporting codes through our? development structures, therefore we realized there is a dire need to increase our support in terms of infrastructure and facilities?, said Thembinkosi Ngcobo, Head of Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit. Ngcobo applauded these two champions and wished them well. ?This is not the first time a national champion is produced in eThekwini but due to the lack of facilities and infrastructure we have seen ?them leaving to other provinces to search for greener pastures?.? ?We have built quality training facilities and sponsored high quality material to revive the spirit of boxing and to show our support and commitment.

We are truly happy to see our investments in sports development paying off,? added Ngcobo.? Zinhle Buthelezi, Head of the Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation said they pledge their full support to boxing and they also wish to increase women participation in boxing so that the Province will also have a woman boxer champion. ?Our intention is to commit ourselves in ensuring that we strengthen our support to all sporting codes at large,? she said. Loyiso Mtya, Chief Executive Officer of Boxing South Africa (BSA), said he is proud of the two champions and encouraged them to continue with their good work and challenged other boxers to work hard because two champions in a province are not enough.? ?There is a long way to go but at least now we have proper training facilities and fighting rings that are of top
