You may have all of your supplies and extra food on hand, but are you in good physical shape to be able to survive?
You may have 3 years worth of food stored for you and your family, but if you have to, can you walk for 10 or 20 miles? Do you have the stamina or fitness? What will you do if something happens and you need to walk out of a bad or disastrous situation? Perhaps your car will only take you so far and you have to walk or hike the rest of the way, are you physically ready?
Ken and I try to stay physically fit and walking is something I have always loved to do. Watching and observing others while out in public places, many (the majority?) of whom are very overweight or obese, made us realize that being in your best physical shape is also one of your greatest survival tools! If you are a prepper, and you know you are overweight and out of shape, please, consider your circumstances should you need to be really self reliant. When the modern systems have failed around you, there will be much physical labor required of you to survive.
Ladies (and gentlemen), do you have a pair of walking shoes and socks in your 72 hour car kit? This is an important addition to your car kit. Let?s say you are at work when an EMP , or an earthquake, or terrorist bombing happens, can you walk home? Do you have a route planned to walk to get yourself home? Ladies, do you really plan on walking home in your high heels? Unless your job requires that you wear walking shoes, I strongly recommend you keep a pair of walking shoes and socks in your car kit.
Some of you may be thinking that you don?t have the time to get in shape. You don?t have to turn yourself into someone with the physique of a navy seal, marine, or green beret. Simply try walking. It?s one of the best exercises most people can do. Here?s what the Mayo Clinic says about walking.
Walking, like other exercise, can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. Walking can help you:
Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the ?bad? cholesterol)
Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the ?good? cholesterol)
Lower your blood pressure
Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes
Manage your weight
Improve your mood
Stay strong and fitAll it takes to reap these benefits is a routine of brisk walking. It doesn?t get much simpler than that. And you can forget the ?no pain, no gain? talk. Research shows that regular, brisk walking can reduce the risk of heart attack by the same amount as more vigorous exercise, such as jogging.
Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. Walking is a form of exercise accessible to just about everybody. It?s safe, simple and doesn?t require practice. And the health benefits are many.
Walking will help you keep fit, both physically and mentally. It will get you more ?in shape? so you can deal better with disaster and a potentially very difficult world after TSHTF. Your health, and how it will affect your survival, are some things you should seriously think about. It all begins with that first step.
