Ashland celebrates 4th of July with annual parade

ASHLAND, VA (WWBT)- People from around the Richmond area came out to Ashland to celebrate one of the area's only 4th of July parades Wednesday.

You won't see any big floats or cars.? The entire thing is by foot, paw or wheel.About 200 people walked or biked in this year's parade.? No matter how they showed it, parade goers were in full patriotic spirit.

Like many people here, parade marshals Charles and Cathy Waldrop are thankful for the sacrifices made by those serving overseas.?

"I appreciate the freedom that we have to agree and disagree," said Charles.

The couple are leading the way because their business, Cross Brothers Grocery, just celebrated its 100th anniversary.

"I've lived here all my life, 60 years and Cathy as well," says Charles.

"We've been coming for three years and we enjoy it and we look forward to it every year," says Elizabeth Sams.? Her family is from Midlothian.

For the youngest of Americans their favorite part of the parade is simple.

?"That we bring an American flag and we can wave them like this," says 6-year-old Cole Henderson.

There were other events going on including a concert, kids games and even an apple pie contest.
