Although developing healthy habits is important to overall, lifelong, health and fitness, the healthy habit we are presenting this week is about breaking your routine and doing something different in terms of your fitness routine.
Your body adapts to the stresses that you present it with. ? It is important to mix things up every once in a while and give your body a new challenge. ?The ?habit? is to take a break from your regular routine every few weeks.
Maybe you run, go to yoga, ride your bike to work and do push ups every week. ?That is a very healthy fitness routine! ?It incorporates, cardio vascular fitness, strength and flexibility. ?Perfect right? ?Well, every once in a while, you need to shake things up. ?Do not ADD these activities to your already full week, rather, take a break from what you always do, even if it is just for a day and replace one of your healthy fitness activities with something fun or different. ?Then, next week, settle back into your routine. ?Your body and brain will love you for it!
Here are some suggestions but the possibilities are endless.
- Take a dance class
- Kundalini yoga
- Play hopscotch with your kids, skip rope, and swing across the monkey bars at a playground for 30 mins
- Try a game of pick up basketball, soccer or street hockey
- If you are sure you are healthy, find a soft grassy patch and try a somersault or cartwheel or two
- Run faster?if you are distance runner, go to a track or find a nice even stretch of pavement, even if it is just between light poles?pick up the pace beyond your usual.
- Hike up hill (Grouse Grind or BCMC anyone?)
